Is Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye a Trigger for Murder?

Three murders have had their motives linked to the Catcher in the Rye, ever since it was published, in 1951 by Jerome David Salinger. Many schools have since banned the book due to the inappropriate language, and the volger behavior that is pushed throughout the book. These schools have also stopped reading The Catcher in the Rye because of the fact that it has been the trigger of many attempted murders and assassinations, turning innocent people into cold blooded killers. The Catcher in the Rye is a book which deeply sided with the preservation of innocence, which Mark David Chapman felt they he was the real life Holden Caulfield. The Catcher in the Rye was written by a mentally disrupted person, J.D. Salinger, who suffered through many of the same conditions that the main character, Holden, had gone through. Salinger puts many of his own emotions and tendencies into the book, which allows the audience to get the true feeling that both Holden and Salinger felt. Thus the people that feel the same way are able to connect and interpret the book in their own way. Mark David Chapman was the first of his kind, killing because a book had instructed him too, and using the book as his motive. “Then this morning I went to the bookstore and bought The Catcher in the Rye. I'm sure the large part of me is Holden Caulfield, who is the main person in the book” (McGunagle). That was the beginning of Chapman’s statement, just hours after he was detained by the New York Police Department.
