Everyday we hear about the astounding technological advances discovered year after year. Thirty years ago, who would have thought that we would soon be able to communicate with a person half way around the world through a computer? The possibilities of technology are endless and beyond belief, but are these possibilities always beneficial in society, or are they causing more harm then help? Authors Pete Hamill, Grant Fjermedal and Roger Rosenblat take a look at certain forms of technology and the beneficial and detrimental aspects that have and will come from its advances.

Technology has many attributes and applications that improve livelihoods. As a student myself, one of the most obvious advancements is in the field of education. Educational technology has slowly been integrated into classrooms over the last decade. Today, the basis of technology, digital literacy, is a crucial skill for academics. “Students who are digitally literate know how to effectively use technology to collaborate, create original content, and conduct in-depth research for academic purposes” (Dotterer, “Fostering Digital Citizenship In The Classroom”). Some worry that the use of technology will encourage people to “cease to exercise their memory and become forgetful” (qtd. In Carr, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”).

In today’s American society we as a nation are evolving technologically. By just a click of a button products, goods, services and information are readily available and easily accessible. However, the question a raised to how beneficial technology is and how this fast pace world affects us. Realistically, with each era the more feasible thing is to alter with the time. On the other hand, by altering ourselves to fit with the pace of society, now we need to factor in the pros and cons of this alteration.

It has altered how we live, communicate, work and play. Although the benefits of technology are vast some are unfavorable, but none the less the advantages are worth it. As technologies advance, a natural side effect of the gains they produce can be seen in the degradation of the local surrounding environments. Ground, air and water pollution from chemical runoff can produce greater negative externalities than the benefits they provide to communities and corporations.

Technology has completely altered the manner in which our society functions, and these changes have been both positive and negative. Technology is beneficial because it levels the playing field, and allows working class citizens in emerging markets to have a fair chance at obtaining a job. A more competitive employee pool allows for more skilled employees to work, increasing overall productivity. Technology also connects people who would previously not have a chance to meet. The creators of Firefox were able to connect online and create a new web browser without ever meeting in person. Technology allowed this to happen. Technology also provides more efficient services for citizens. With the click of a button, Uber provides individuals with a more efficient transport in comparison to taxis. Health care advancements have saved millions lives. Technology improves the overall quality of life for citizens. Unfortunately, there are also negative effects of technology.
