Ironically enough, on the same day of Hannah McBride’s chapel, my FYS professor kicked off our class time with a quote by T.H. White:

“The best thing for being sad," ... "is to learn something. That 's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.”

Then it all made sense! I was able to comprehend what Hannah had highlighted in her speech! I began to realize that we, as humans, believe there has to be a purpose for everything we do and a reason for everything that happens. We get trapped in the belief that our lives have no meaning without an overarching purpose or final goal that we have to achieve. But what if our lives have, in essence, no specific reason or purpose? It is troubling for me to believe that there is something that we have to do with our lives. Where is the free will that God gives us in that? If we believe that there is a set purpose for our lives, we are just actors following an unknown…
