When violent gun crimes are committed, blame is placed on scapegoats such as: the media, the parents, and the music. But where does blame truly lie? The lack of stringent gun laws allows these violent crimes to continue. Ultimately, an individual makes the final decision concerning the action he or she takes, but laws need to be in place to curb certain behaviors. When an individual commits a crime using a firearm, the first thing that goes through peoples’ minds, is why? What the majority of people do not understand is that sometimes there is no reason why. The human mind is a complex structure, and there is no algorithm that can be used to determine what action a human being will take. 67% of guns circulating through our country have been used for cold, blooded murders. Rather than for protection, most guns are being used to commit murder. Guns are not provided to be used as tools of war, but as symbols of peace. The goal of an individual should not be to harm someone else, but to protect themselves from danger and only harm someone else if it is absolutely necessary. I am not advocating that guns should be completely removed from the streets and homes of our society because, as proposed by Peter Van Uhm, “there are times when the only option between good and evil is a gun” (Van Uhm). Nevertheless, gun ownership and possession should be more closely monitored and regulated. Guns should only be used when necessary and not just shown off as some type of accessory. Laws need to be made more stringent to ensure that this is the case. “In the 10-year period from November 30, 1998 to December 31, 2008, about 96 million background checks for gun purchasers were processed through the federal background check system. Of these approximately 1% were denied” (Agresti, and Cardone). Our society is making it very easy for individuals to get obtain firearms. Many laws need to be reformed, especially those pertaining to assault weapons and the number of guns an individual is allowed to own.
