Ishmael's Dialectical Journal

Ishmael is an African American male from Sierra Leone, approximately 14-16 years old upon his arrival at the Benin Home a psychosocial therapy treatment center in Sierra Leone. He arrives with several other boys, but no identified family members, no relationship status. No particular religious affiliations but does describe some form of cultural spirituality. Medical examination shows no significant nutritional or physical abnormalities. No identified residence, as such deemed homeless.

There are multiple details that stood out as particularly true to life in my view. One was the nariartator that it is telling the story/ his view point main character mentions what check out aisle number. It mentions how the three girls looked. The character payed attention to how the girl that seem to be the leader was walking saying “she came down a little hard on her heels, as if she didn’t walk in her bare feet much” this quote helps you picture how the person and might help picture what the girl was walking like. He gave details to where he was and what he was doing when the three girls was doing. He mentions that “I’m in the third check-out slot with my back to the door so that I didn’t see them until they had reach the bread” this helps the reader to set up an mental image of the store as they are reading.

Ishmael is about a young scientist that can telepathically speak with a gorilla named Ishmael who will soon to be the teacher. Ishmael taught himself his education when he was able to talk to his owner telepathically to get him books. Ishmael helps the narrator realize that we can’t just take whatever we want from the environment and all of its resources. The narrator sees Ishmael for days in a row but ends up having to miss days to see him. He then finds Ishmael at a traveling carnival to finish the lesson they had. The narrator has an idea of buying Ishmael from the carnival owners and finally when he got enough money to buy the gorilla, Ishmael dies.

The underworld seemed to be getting colder and I couldn’t tell if it was because I’d fled the room that was lit or because Hades’s heart had been nearly ripped out. I was shocked at first when I read this passage because of the tragic events that has happened to this man. As a result I felt extremely sorry that, that has happened to him. However, seeing him answering Liesel's question so bravely, I feel a spark of respect to him because many people doesn't like to talk about their past, especially about the tragic events. For example, when my father injured his hand at work, I kept asking him how he injured it, but no matter how many times I asked, I wasn’t able to get an answer. If you read the diary of a high school girl, what could you learn about her? The name of her best friend, what kind of a person she is, and maybe even signs of troubles deeper than the bad grade she got on her last chemistry exam would pop out at you. She probably would not explicitly state these things, either—they would become apparent simply by looking at how often her best friend’s name appeared within the pages, how she interacted with the people around her, and how she described her thoughts and feelings. Seeing things directly from her perspective would give you a unique look at who she was as a person, what her relationships with other people were like, and what her take on events was, all without ever being told what they were like

Before me loomed the old observatory which would be our home for the next year. Its walls were an expanse of red brick stacked on red brick, contrasting the two white front doors and the white domed tower. It sat atop Henrick Cliff with large fields sloping down from the front of the house. The tower could be seen rising from the back of the house, with the cliffs edge and sea beyond that. The observatory looked like a forgotten castle, waiting for the next rulers to occupy it.

You had never thought of yourself as an object, nor did you ever truly think of yourself as human being. You were simple existed with no real meaning. If you thought about it deep enough, you might conclude it was for your sister, the leader of some gang in the midst of some unknown town on the east coast of the US. To Yossarian he was “living” the dream, because he could fake pains and need to stay in the hospital for days at a time until he “felt better” which kept him out of flying missions. While this was “everything he wanted”, we later learn that Colonel Cathcart (complete ignorant sun of a gun) keeps raising the missions the soldiers have to fly until they are allowed to be grounded and this actually hurts Yossarian’s plan of staying here until the war is over. Although the hospital seemed to be his paradise, no one liked him there but let him stay even though some knew he was lying about the pains in his liver, bringing up one of the several reasons his squadron was very contradictory and messed

For my first entry I chose a quote between the pages of one and forty-four, “Things changed rapidly in a matter of seconds and no one had any control over anything. We had yet to learn these things and implement survival tactics, which was what it came down to. That night we were so hungry that we stole people’s food while they slept. It was the only way to get through the night” (29).This part of the book takes place at the end of chapter 4, and I thought this was a very interesting part. In this excerpt Ishmael and his friends steal food after no one would sell or give food to them. He says it was the only way to get through the night. I thought this was intriguing because up to this point Ishmael and his friends were very innocent kids and I would never imagine them doing something so scandalous. I believe that the aspect of war is starting to get to him. After writing this I want to know if you think Ishmael would
