It was announced earlier this month, after a four-month operation, that Raqqa is no longer under the control of ISIS. Raqqa is Syrian city has been plagued by war and death under the Islamic fundamentalist group since 2014. ISIS, also known as ISIL, has been losing some of their major territories in the recent months. A liberation group, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), is a union made up of both Kurdish and Arab forces backed by the United States has been fighting for the liberation of states that ISIS have taken over. The fight for total liberation from ISIS is a long way from being over, but SDF forces continuing fighting for the cause. In this year alone, more than 2,700 have been killed. On October 8th, Iraq Body Count recorded that the total number of civilian deaths is 66,345. This number goes back towards the beginning of the conflict in 2014. These are just rough estimates of the death toll. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that in 2017 that the total number of deaths was more than 475,000 people; out of that number, 99,600 were civilians. Which calculates to roughly ¼ of the deaths were those of innocent people. This does not include the civilians that are still missing or not accounted for. The city of Raqqa has been left in devastation after the long battle that it had to endure during the blood-soaked conflict. ISIL left behind many mines and tunnels that housed sleeper cells and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Along with the destruction that ISIL caused, the city has been nearly destructed by air strikes that left buildings in ruins. Even though, air strikes have been opposed by many nations and their leaders, they were almost necessary to aid the end of the conflict. Going back to the US being a hegemonic power, many other nations do not have the power or the ‘take action’ attitude. Even though many of the air-strikes were carry out by the US, the US was not the only nation that helped with the liberation of Syrian and Iranian cities. Other nations that got involved in the conflict were Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Jordan, the Netherlands,
Iraq sit in a lot of deconstructed areas. After the war the US and UN are working hard on getting the reconstruction of the area strated. The major concern about iraq is the funds to rebuild after the war. A woman by the name of Lisa Grande states within the article “We worry that if we don't move in this direction, and move quickly, the progress being made against ISIL may be undermined or lost,”. The U.S is pushing for the reconstruction with Iraq and all of the cities that were damaged during the war. The expected funds in which ha seek amounts up to about $400 million dollars. Officials over in Iraq say “ We're not going to bomb
The second report that I will analysis comes from the French media. The French news media is the only news outlets to released information that "36 IS fighters were killed" (Agence France-Presse, April 14, 2017), they are the only nation to give an early estimated number on the death of Islamic state militants. The article also gives details on the scene by describing the "the remote area in towering flames" with a "mushroom cloud rising over the rugged terrain" (Agence France-Presse, April 14, 2017). Additionally, this article gives two different perspectives to the audience, something that other articles did not do. According to the report, Khair Mohammad, an Achin resident supported the bombardment by stating, "we don't care if our houses are destroyed, we want Daesh to be eliminated" (Agence France-Presse, April 14, 2017). Although this sole resident does not speak for all residents, it gives a clear message to outsiders that are not living their situation. The statement is powerful because it reveals that the residents do not welcome IS militants into their community and want help to get rid of them. Another supporter of the bombing was the President Ashraf Ghani, who expressed it on Twitter. However, not everyone welcomed the bombing such
Sadly, some of the heavily armed vehicles that they have captured were packed with bombs and explosives, which lead to a devastating amount of suicide bombers. This all connects to religion and how it can either unify or divide. ISIS is killing thousands of innocent people around the world all because they believe that everyone should follow the same religion. They are trying to “protect” Muslim community from this. Their religion is causing all of the death, terror, and problems in our
The United States, with its coalition partners, has committed to degrade and destroy the terrorist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This group poses a threat to the people of the Middle East, as well as to the United States, our allies, and interests in the region. If this terrorist organization is left uninterrupted, ISIL will grow, threatening the surrounding areas of the Middle East, our allies abroad, and the United States.
Likewise, there are several instances in which the Unites States has stepped in to alleviate foreign crises. Mullaney expresses that in 2014, air strikes were launched to help the Yazidi people, and other countries have agreed to help with combat, but they are waiting on America to make the move towards war; while President Obama has been submitting requests to send out troops, nothing has been approved yet (125, 128). The United States needs to have approval to launch troops to help the Yazidi people. Mullaney is insistent that the U.S. must provide more than just air strikes in order to help the Yazidis. While some feel that it is not the United States’ responsibility, ISIS cannot be stopped alone. On the contrary, the author includes
(CNN)Dozens of Yazidi women captured and enslaved by ISIS in 2014 have been moved from the Iraqi city of Mosul to Syria, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The monitoring group and US military officials have said ISIS militants are fleeing Mosul and heading for Raqqa, Syria, the de facto capital of ISIS, as Iraqi-led forces push to free the key Iraqi city from the terror group. Dozens of ISIS families have already arrived in Raqqa, the observatory said. Ethnic cleansing by ISIS has displaced, killed and enslaved hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Yazidis, members of an ancient ethnic and religious minority. Modern-day Iraq is the traditional homeland of the Yazidis. Islamic militants captured thousands of Yazidi women and children, and killed the men.
ISIS or commonly known as “ISIL” poses a huge threat to the United States today. Currently as the National Interest says “ISIS currently controls thousands of square miles of ungoverned territory”(Gottlieb 2017).
After destroying ISIL in Iraq, enemy forces in Syria will be defeated by ongoing efforts of local Syrian rebels, Assad forces, and/or Russian intervention.
Syria has been in war for four years. The rebels versus the president, Bashar al-Assad, and his loyal troops. But in 2016, the war has worsened. One of Syria’s major cities, Aleppo, has been getting bombed relentlessly by Russia. Innocent people die everyday. Children are left hurt and parentless. People that survive unscathed try to flee the city, only to find they cannot. They are prisoners in the city they once loved.
ISIS is a Sunni militant group seeking to create its own state, governed by their interpretation of the Laws of the Quran, and to destroy all other branches of Islam as well as convert or destroy all non-Muslims.
There sheer numbers are a daunting task compounded ISIS using advanced tactical equipment seized from Iraq against their military making the fight ever more difficult. The United States and a coalition of other nations have been bombarding militants since September 2014. Along with the air strikes the countries militias have organizing to fight the war crimes being committed by ISIS. The Shia militias were key to the recapture from IS of another city, Tikrit, in April after it had been held for more than eight months (Tikrit battle- http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-27838034). Some of these Militias are supported by Iran and cannot receive air support from the coalition because their motives are not known. After the initial collapse of the Iraqi army at the hands of ISIS they have rebuilt and are currently engaged in operations to retake the major cities that were lost around the
ISIS has initiated concerns in the district and around the globe by butchering minorities, regulating sex slavery, getting rid of state armed forces, and killing rivals in awful shows of brutality. It annihilated heritage sites, for example, sanctuaries in the ancient city of Palmyra, and powered the worldwide relics
Lost amidst ISIS' recent killing spree is the news that ISIS' self-declared Caliphate has lost a third of its territory and half its manpower. Money is running out. Moral has collapsed. ISIS has been forced to execute its soldiers to maintain order in the ranks.
The Yazidi were systematically targeted by ISIS in a violent campaign to “purify” the region from non-Islamic influences. The genocide sparked interest in multiple large countries while organizations spread awareness. The United States has been a large influence in the country of Iraq in hopes of protecting the Yazidi people from more harm until a plan is made to stop the attacks made by ISIS. During the presidency of Barack Obama, attacks were authorized to protect Yazidi people, Americans and Iraqi minorities. Despite the attack President Obama guaranteed that no troops would be sent for combat. On August 9th, the USA sent 9 airstrikes; with these airstrikes the US airdropped 3,800 gallons of water and 16,128 MREs (Washington Post). The
against marketplaces, schools, and mosques in Syria. The Syrian military is standing strong even if some of them is being killed by coalition airstrikes, as well as ground battles between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Islamic State. In the other hand the Syrian people is also standing strong to face the trial that their country is
