Muhammad’s attitude to the ethics of war and peace were different to those of pre-Islamic Arabia. He showed no inclination towards the use of violence or even self-defence unless necessary. The Quran has a common theme of peace. The Quran guides adherents in their quest for inner peace through teaching them to make peace with each other as Surah 49:10 states “the believers are but siblings therefore make peace between your siblings…” This scripture encourages Muslims’ to be at peace with one …show more content…
The first pillar, shahadah, or confession of faith helps Muslims to be at peace with themselves as well as God. A Muslim proclaims that there is no other God but Allah and that Muhammad is God’s messenger. In other words, there is no other power that they should trust. This helps them achieve inner peace. Praying five times a day is another pillar of Islam and is often seen a ritual but for Muslims’ it not only reminds them of God’s closeness and the feeling of peace that it brings. Sacred texts provide adherents with a guide in which assist them on the quest to reach and achieve inner peace. The principle teachings of peace in Islam come from the concept of Jihad. Islam justifies war as permitted when people are prevented from living in freedom and upholding their religion beliefs and practices.
There are groups such as the Islamic Council of Australia that contribute to world peace initiatives and engage in public conversations with non-Muslims’ to help emphasise that Islam is a religion of peace. This global initiative strives to achieve peace the way Allah created it to be, that which is stated throughout the Islamic sacred
The bible, Quran and Hadith are respected texts and are regarded as the books of truth. Believers take these sacred texts as the revealed message from God – the truth. As such, they are used as a guide to life in the pursuit of peace between people and also between people and God. Jesus and Muhammad had a role in spreading the teaching of peace. To understand how the Muslims and Christians view peace it is imperative to first understand what peace means. Most people would refer to peace as freedom of war, disagreements, conflict and calmness of mind. To understand the roles of Christianity and Islam in the teaching of peace the concepts of inner peace, world and society peace has to be addressed, for both Christians and Muslims, inner peace refers to the state of calmness and tranquility experienced by the individual. It is often understood to be associated with the spiritual peace with God/Jesus for Christians and spiritual peace with Allah who desires peace for Muslims. Muslims believe that it is through complete submission to Allah also called the Greater Jihad that an individual may achieve inner peace. The Quran states clearly that in order to achieve world peace, all people must submit to Allah as they believe all people of the Muslim community around the world are one community. They believe that there can be no world/universal peace or the lesser Jihad without the greater Jihad which is misunderstood by many Islamic and non-Islamic people.
As of today, Christianity and Islam are the world’s two largest and rapidly growing religions. They share an estimated 3.6 billion followers, more than half of the world’s population. Initially the two religions may seem to have nothing in common, but when you go beyond the surface and examine the rituals, beliefs, and founders, as well as the spread of both religions, they share many similarities. In many ways, there is irony in tension between Christianity and Islam, given the extremely similar history and nature of their religions. It is perhaps lost on many people who subscribe to these religions that there is no more truth to one than the other. But when observed from an objective viewpoint it is undeniable that both Christianity and Islam are remarkably similar in origin and ideology. In order to see and understand their similarities, it is important to look back to the birth and rise of both religions.
Christianity and Islam are wide spread religions which impact the lives of believers spiritually. Both religions have had substantial impact on the course of history and have formed the basis of many countries laws and are highly recognized by governments. Though Christianity is more widely known, they both pose the same challenges to each other. Considering the similarities and differences of Christianity and Islam, it can be said they are both very different.
On the surface, Islam and Christianity appear to have very little in common, however, as you get deeper into areas such as rituals, beliefs, ethics, founders, and sacred objects, the two show strong mutual similarities, particularly in the fundamental areas. In this essay I will compare and contrast the doctrines that make up the worlds largest and most recognized religions, Christianity and Islam.
Religion has had an enormous impact on the lives of every human being. In its wake, religion has provided a code of morals for people to live by, given inspiration to many of the world’s most gifted artists, and has united civilization under common beliefs. Above all else, religion helps answer the age old question of what is our purpose on Earth. Although it has allowed civilizations to prosper and rise to unimaginable heights, religion has also been divisive and has created great rifts between cultures. Two of the greatest religions of the modern era are that of Christianity and Islam. Both have the same origins and similar messages of peace, yet their differences have caused events such as war, genocide, and other atrocities. Although Christianity and Islam share many of the same lessons of tranquility and love, they have also been used by many to justify unspeakable acts of violence against each other. Islam and Christianity are inherently violent, not because of the message they preach, but because of the unique interpretations by some of their followers.
Many worshippers in the great monotheistic religions associate their faiths with peace. Christ, himself, is sometimes called “The Prince of Peace.” The Pope, leader of the Catholic Church, often prays for world peace and encourages all sides in bloody conflicts to lay down their arms. It is not just Christianity that is associated with peace; Muhammad hoped Islam would bring peace to the clans of the Arabian Peninsula, and the traditional way to refer to Muhammad among Muslims is, “The Prophet, peace be upon him.” It is, therefore, ironic that these monotheistic religions, in the period between 1300 BC and 1452 AD, created far more conflict and disharmony than they did peace. Internal and external conflicts created
Muslims, both as individuals and as a community, therefore have certain goals to achieve: communicating Islam to others, conveying the truth to everyone, striving to prevent oppression and tyranny, and establishing justice. To do this, they must live an exemplary life. Thus Islam’s moral and ethical values usually have played an important part in its spread.
The Qur'an is the fundamental text for all Muslims as it is believed to contain the revelation of Allah, complete and unaltered as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The secondary sacred text is the Hadith which refers to the collection of traditions, words and deeds of the prophet Muhammad who lived in accordance to the beliefs of Islam in the way which Allah intended. The Qur'an refers to Islam as 'the path of peace' and it is due to this importance placed upon peace that the Qur’an also declares that there be no aggressive war permitted in Islam. Peace is achieved through submission to Allah and this is reinforced through daily prayer (salat).
Many people do not realize how much Christianity (Christian) and Islam (Muslim) religion have in common, both religions are considered to be monotheistic Abrahamic religions because their common origin being Abraham. Also, Jesus Christ is considered to be the most important figure in both religions. Although these two particular religions have much in common they also have many differences. Many people believe that Christianity began with the Jesus Christ; however the study of Christianity began with Christ’s most important early follower Saint Paul and Islam religion began with the prophet Muhammad, whom was considered to be the last prophet sent by Allah. This paper will breakdown the history of Christianity, explain the different type of Christianity, and discuss the modern day Christianity. This paper will also explain the history of Muslim religion, the different types of Muslims and the modern day Muslims.
All in all, Islam is not a religion of peace. In the Qur’an, the religious text of Islam, there are multiple times where the founder of Islam and Muslim Prophet, Muhammad condones violence, domestic violence, murder and excessive punishment. It brainwashes and oppresses those who choose to
At the first glance, Islam and Christianity appear to have nothing in common, however; as you go beyond the surface, they appear to have many similarities such as their beliefs of God, their beliefs of life after death, their holy scriptures, and their prayers. These religions, although are two entirely different beliefs, share a similar origin. Like many other religions, they both claim to be the one and only true way to God. In order to truly see and understand their similarities, one must date back to the rise and birth of Christianity and Islam. Throughout the course of this essay, I will compare the many facets that show the alikeness between these two growing religions.
The objective of this work is to examine Islam, a highly controversial sensitive issue in today's world and specifically to examine the misconceptions, beliefs, and values of those of the Islamic faith. Most people think that the majority of Muslims live in the Middle East, while in reality there are more people of the Islamic faith living in Indonesia. Islam, just as Judaism and Christianity, is practiced in various cultures, serves to shape, and is shaped by those cultures. This study examines the perceptions of those of the three faiths in various countries and how they view one another and seek to answer how a level of threat is felt by those belonging to these three religious groups in various countries. Countries examined in this study include those of the United States, Great Britain, India, Pakistan, and the Middle East. The depth of understanding or the teachings of Islam among the various religious groups in these various countries will also be examined in terms of how these understandings impact the ways that Muslims and non-Muslims interact and communicate with one another.
Today, there are more than 4,200 religions in the world, and 21 major religions that are followed in the millions and some even in the billions, there are two religions which utterly dominate every other religion in terms of followers. Christianity and Islam, both of which are Abrahamic religions, are similar in nature, out of which, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world today. The compassion projected by Muslims has impressed me and has led me to admire the religion of Islam. The media is a deceptive tool and is often guilty of degrading Muslims as beings who lack humanity and as ones who endorse terrorist activities; however, the love I have received amongst my Muslim peers has caused me to believe otherwise. Violence is not condoned by Muslims, and even Muslims view terrorists as false of Islam. The Holy Quran promotes love and encourages its disciples to do so accordingly. The religion of Islam has impressed me, particularly two of the five pillars - Zakat and Sawm - as well as countless of meaningful verses which are contained in the Holy Quran.
I do regard Islam to be a religion of peace in the same sense as Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism
The idea of peace is the dominant idea of Islam. Peace within our souls, peace within our communities, peace with all human beings and peace in the entire world. Islam is defined by the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) when he was asked by the Jibril: “To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His Prophet (P.B.U.H.), to perform the prayers, to give the Zakat (helping the needy financially), to fast in the month of Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to Makkah, if one is able to do so.” [Reported by Muslim and others]. Islam also means "complete submission to the Will of God", the purpose of which is to reach the knowledge, realization, and nearness of God resulting in a profound spiritual state of inner peace,
