Throughout this course we have learned several different aspects of Islam as a culture and as a religion we have also been able to put to rest several myths that have plagued Islam in the eyes of the Western World. In this paper I will discuss the significant difference of Islam as a religion versus Islam as a culture as seen through the eyes of a Malay Muslim. Sometimes even the culture over-rides religion and they rush out to implement a cultural practice as if it would be unIslamic in not doing so. Culture takes precedence over everything else and, if they miss one or two obligations in Islam, like praying or fasting, it does not matter as long as that so called "adat" has been safely implemented.
For example, they would spend hours dressing up a bride for a wedding ceremony. Never mind that the bride has to miss her prayers because of this. Allowing her to do her prayers would mean the preparations would be interrupted or delayed, not to mention her hair, which had been carefully set at great expense of time and money, would get all messed up.
The house would need to be cleaned and everything would need to be nicely set up in preparation. This would mean they would have to miss the last day of fasting or else there would be no energy left for the great task ahead of them. Impressing the guests who would be visiting for the wedding is more important than fasting. Culture is so important that they would sacrifice their child as long as the culture is protected. They would not sacrifice for Islam.
How did this come about? Islam is very specific and explicit. Islam is the ultimate and everything else comes later. How could, therefore, culture stand between the Muslim and their religion? Even more
Islam, a religion of people submitting to one God, seeking peace and a way of life without sin, is always misunderstood throughout the world. This paper is meant to dispel, or rather educate about the big issues that plague people’s minds with false ideas and this will only be touching the surface.

Islamic studies has become a subject of strategic importance in our multicultural society. With all of the political upheaval and ever present fear of extremism and terrorism in the world today, it is essential to promote the understanding of Islam and the role Muslims have in the contemporary world. To do this, one must first have an understanding of the culture and religious tenets surrounding Islam, compare and contrast these beliefs with Christianity and Judaism, and discuss how the perceptions or
one of the fastest growing religions in the world and is estimated to grow in the years to come. With Islam spreading across the world and many people converting, this will have an effect on the religion itself; the teachings will be shaped by the cultures and ethnicities of the area. Thus, Islam will differ from country to country. Not only that, with Islam spreading it has caused some controversies. Since a lot of people do not understand Islam, it is often confused with Christianity and Judaism. However, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are similar and different in many ways. In addition, with the recent related terrorist attacks, this has caused many stereotypes, which affects the way Muslims and non-Muslims communicate and interact.
This type of primary source is a written document by Jonathan Lyons in which he describes Islam through western eyes. In Islam Through Western Eyes, Jonathan Lyons unloads Western propensities for contemplating Islam, directing a watchful examination of the West's great totalizing story crosswise over one thousand years of history. He watches the talk's destructive consequences for the sociologies, including human science, legislative issues, theory, religious philosophy, worldwide relations, security studies, and human rights grant. He takes after its influence on research, speeches, political system, and government approach, keeping the West from reacting viably to its most noteworthy twenty-first-century challenges: the ascent of Islamic power, the rise of religious savagery, and the growing pressure between built up social qualities and multicultural rights among Muslim foreigner populaces.

When looking at comparing two major religions, Christianity and Islam it is evident that there are similar yet very different beliefs and a different building foundation. For example one of the major differences is the fact that the Islam religion does not recognize Jesus as God’s son, "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10) Instead they know him to be a prophet. This is a huge difference because Christians recognize mankind to have a sinful heart, where as Islam does not acknowledge the origin of sin. This is not the only Islam worldview that differs from Christianity, the differences discussed in this paper will be the origin, identity, purpose, morality and our destiny of the Islam worldview compared
The article is about an bicultural couple who are giving their daughter (Aliya) the choice of picking which culture she wants to express, whether it be her mother’s (Krista’s) American culture or her father’s (Ismail’s) Muslim culture. Much to the dismay of her mother, Aliya chooses her Muslim culture on the basis that she wants to begin wearing a headscarf. While Krista doesn’t mind Aliya’s choice, and even advocates self-expression, the appearance of a white, blonde lady dressed American-like (jeans and a tank top) with a young child in a headscarf doesn’t quite paint your everyday picture of a normal family; especially when going to the grocery store. Krista’s main concern for Aliya is what others may say regarding the choice she has made

Islam is the second largest growing religion in the world with approximately three million of Muslims residing in the United States of America. It is important to consider the culture of Muslims. Cultural considerations include pain, communication techniques to use and avoid, food preferences and avoidances, views on dying and death and how Muslims grieve.
Since the attacks on 9/11, Americans have passed judgement on the Islamic culture as a violent religion. However, many Americans are ignorant to the fact that Islam is practiced throughout the entire world and not just run by extremists and violet people in the Middle East. People can learn about Islamic culture by learning the origin of Islam in the Qur’an and through Mohammed and his teachings, the Islamic golden age and western influence and modernization on the Islamic world.
The region of the Middle East and its inhabitants have always been a wonder to the Europeans, dating back to the years before the advent of Islam and the years following the Arab conquest. In the Islamic world, the religion defines and enriches culture and as a result the culture gives meaning to the individual. Islam is not only a religion, it is in its own way a culture. It may be this very
The objective of this work is to examine Islam, a highly controversial sensitive issue in today's world and specifically to examine the misconceptions, beliefs, and values of those of the Islamic faith. Most people think that the majority of Muslims live in the Middle East, while in reality there are more people of the Islamic faith living in Indonesia. Islam, just as Judaism and Christianity, is practiced in various cultures, serves to shape, and is shaped by those cultures. This study examines the perceptions of those of the three faiths in various countries and how they view one another and seek to answer how a level of threat is felt by those belonging to these three religious groups in various countries. Countries examined in this study include those of the United States, Great Britain, India, Pakistan, and the Middle East. The depth of understanding or the teachings of Islam among the various religious groups in these various countries will also be examined in terms of how these understandings impact the ways that Muslims and non-Muslims interact and communicate with one another.
However, for the purposes of this paper, one must associate each religion with one or two countries to have some basis for analysis of the current events pertaining to each religion, and more importantly, the clash between that religion and Western thought. Therefore, Sinic/Confucian thought will be associated mostly with China, Hindu with India, Islam with the Middle Eastern and North African countries, Orthodox with countries of the former Soviet Union and Western with the United States and western European countries. The African continent will only be dealt with in the context of Islam, as traditional African religious are too variant and do not usually fit with one of the four theories of the press.
