The idea of peace is the dominant idea of Islam. Peace within our souls, peace within our communities, peace with all human beings and peace in the entire world. Islam is defined by the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) when he was asked by the Jibril: “To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His Prophet (P.B.U.H.), to perform the prayers, to give the Zakat (helping the needy financially), to fast in the month of Ramadan, and to make pilgrimage to Makkah, if one is able to do so.” [Reported by Muslim and others]. It is a personal journey for God first but it gives great satisfaction to the Haaj (pilgrim), as he or she leaves everything in this life behind. The pilgrimage to Makkah is also a worldwide conference of Muslims, where they meet there representing all nations, racial groups, and ethnic divisions. They are instructed by God to be loving, caring, and tolerant of each other, as well as praising God for His limitless benefits and bounties they have been enjoying. The Prophet (P.B.U.H.), only mentioned these five acts because they are the foundations of Islam upon which everything is based. Therefore, whoever discharges these five duties becomes a true Muslim, whereas a person who performs only the first obligation, i.e., testifying that there is no deity save Allah and that Muhammad is Allah’s messenger, becomes a Muslim only as a matter of law for purposes of this world, and remains obliged to perform all the remaining acts required of him. As for someone who rejects the declaration of faith, he has no share whatsoever in Islam.
