Islam was founded by Muhammad around 570-632 C.E. in Mecca, now modern day Saudi Arabia. It is the second largest and fastest growing religion today with 1.5 billion followers. It is the belief in one God. The holy book of Islam is The Qu’ran. It is believed that Muhammad had a religious experience with the Angel Gabriel. Later Muhammad was taken on a Night Journey by the same angel, from a mosque in Jerusalem, where he went up into heaven. This place is known as The Dome of the Rock. Muhammad who later through his teachings gathered a group of followers fled to Mecca in 622 C.E. which is known as Medina today. 622 C.E. is an important date because it marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar and what is known as the year of hijra. Islam has basically the same beliefs as Christians and Jews believing God created the world and everything in it, that God revealed in his word, even though it is by different text for each religion, how to live and take care of the poor. That God will judge all in the end time and that if you live by all that God has said you will go to heaven. There are Five Pillars of Worship in Islam: 1. God is the one true God and Muhammad is the messenger. 2. You must stop what you are doing five times a day and pray to God. 3. Once a year, from dawn to dusk there must be a fasting. This is in the month of Ramadan. 4. Each year a certain amount of a person’s wealth must be given to meet God’s purpose. 5. Once in a lifetime each Muslim who is able must make the pilgrimage to Mecca. By the eighteenth century there were many thousands of Muslims in the United States working. Many had lost their Islamic identities because they had been cut off from their families and heritages from being brought over on slave ships. Since that time there has been an influx of up to 5 million Muslims practicing the Islam religion.
