On Feburary 28, 1993, at Mount Carmel in Waco, Texas, agents from the ATF launched a morning raid against the Branch Davidian compound as part of an investigation involving the group and the illegal possession of firearms and explosives. The Branch Davidians, led by David Koresh were a splinter sect of the Seventh-day Adventist. As the agents attempted to breach the complex, gunfire erupted, that begin a fierce bun fight that ultimately left four ATF agents dead and 15 others wounded. The Branch Davidians had six mortally wounded, and many others injured, including David Koresh, who was wounded by the front door of the compound. They were soon joined by Bradley tanks, which fired tear-gas canisters through the compound’s windows. The cult members, many with gas masks on, refused to leave, and around 11:40 a.m. the operation was completed with about 100 canisters of tear-gas being fired into the building. Then just after noon, a fire could be seen coming from multiple locations within the compound, and minutes later nine members fled the rapidly spreading blaze. Sounds of gunfire were reported, but soon ceased as the place became completely engulfed by the flames. Koresh and at least 80 of his followers, including 22 children, died during the government’s second assault on their home. The FBI and DOJ maintained there was conclusive evidence that the members ignited the fire. On the subject of gunfire during the fire, the government argued that the Davidians were either killing each other as part of a suicide pact or they were killing dissenters who attempted to escape the ordered suicide by fire. All the surviving member contest this official government position, along with critics in the press and around the world, whose cases against the ATF and FBI’s handling of the Waco standoff range from incompetence to premeditated murder.
