The letter A changes its significance throughout the novel as in the start as a mark of sin, shame and punishment ,as this symbol is responsible for separating her from the society thus leading to isolation. Thus Giving the letter A a new dimension of ‘Alone’ or isolation that leads to self realization and awakening of conscience as she is separated from society and this isolation and feeling of aloneness gives her time and space for redemption. Hawthorne is more interested in the consequences of sin as he says in The Scarlet Letter:
“Lonely as was Hester’s situation, and without a friend on earth who dared to show himself, she, however, incurred no risk of want” ( 65).

As isolation gives Hester time for redemption ,this isolation and burning effect of scarlet letter is very positive on her as her needlework makes he independent and she being a helping hand is often called a sister mercy in the novel. As the townspeople said:
“‘Do you see that woman with the embroidered badge?’ They would say to strangers. ‘It is our Hester—the town’s own Hester—who is so kind to the poor, so helpful to the sick, so comfortable to the afflicted!” (129-130)
Hester,s personality is transformed and this transformation is a sign of regeneration that how she made her punishment as a source of courage .This symbol is ironic as this made her uplifted in the society.
“The letter was the symbol of her calling. Such helpfulness was found in her—so much power to do, and power to sympathize— that many people refused to interpret the scarlet “A” by its original signification. They said that it meant “Able”, so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength” (129).
It is ironic how Hester,s quest for true love made her ignore the sin of adultery and then how this same sin became the source of moral and spirtual uplifting of her character.These three different illustration of this symbol explains the different stages of Hester,s life as “A” was her symbol of adultery, then this same symbol represented her life of isolation and then became her
