As a young adult in a world of issues and controversies, I chose to write about a very popular topic that recently has taken America by storm creating one of the biggest controversies of our time; Transgender rights. In March of 2016, North Carolina passed a law requiring transgender people to use only public restrooms and locker rooms that match the gender on their birth certificate ("Transgender Rights"). The article starts with this important fact and continues to describe the definition of the term transgender, which is, a person who identifies themselves as a gender that is not their assigned birth sex. It goes on to discuss the controversy in a whole, an example being those celebrities and public officials who have taken a stand against discrimination of the (LGBT) community. This article also discusses the recent issues and …show more content…
After discussing what the discrimination against transgender people is, the article offers a look into the side of those who support laws to protect the rights of transgenders and those who oppose those same laws, giving the audience plenty of insight into both sides of the issue. Lastly, the article concludes with how the transgender community faces everyday challenges that are sure to continue through time
As stated before, I am a young adult in a world of issues and controversies, I not only chose this popular topic to summarize it but also to give my opinions on the issue of transgender rights. To begin, I first want to make it known that I have nothing against those who are a part of the LGBT Community, but
In the late 1950’s to mid-1960’s, the transgender community faced discrimination such as physical and verbal harassment, denial of social spaces, and alienation in the media. This matters to us today because transgender individuals are still existing and are a part of our human population today. The community is also still struggling to find their representation in the media and in society. The transgender community is still facing a wide array of types of discrimination, from nasty looks to denied access of education. Gender identity should not be taken into consideration when determining another person’s worthiness of respect.
Transgendered people in America have made many great strides since the 1990s. They have encountered violence, lack of health care, and the loss of homes, jobs, family and friends. There have been many phases of the struggle of being transgendered in America over the years. The current phase we must be in now is equal rights. There are many variations of discrimination against the transgendered community. In our society we simply do not like what we do not understand. It is easier to discriminate than to try and understand. We are all created different and we should appreciate our differences. The change must come by addressing the views of the public. There is much justification in the unequal rights of transgendered peoples. The Human
The problem with transgender rights is that they are not treated as basic human rights. The main cause of this problem is that some people look at it as "not in the norm" or "out of the ordinary" and as a result, transgender people are either out casted, bullied, beaten, killed or denied certain rights. A human male wanting to transition into a human female and vice versa should not make them less than exactly what they are, a human-being. A possible solution would be for people to take the time to research and educate or interact with more transgender people and learn something about their decision instead of going into the problem blind with the assumption that all transgender people are not normal.
Transgender rights and policies have always been an ongoing debate. In the article, “Bathroom Battlegrounds and Penis Panics,” Schilt and Westbrook (2015) argued that in order to push gender equality forward, we must consider the rights of transgender people by allowing them to have access to bathrooms that support their gender identity rather than their biological sex. In doing so, authors believed that it would make progress in alleviating discrimination against transgender people. However, in this conscious effort to fight for transgender rights and their access to sex-segregated spaces,
In a recent podcast regarding a transgender high school student being forced to change in the nurse’s office instead of in the locker room with other students addressed the controversy regarding the treatment of members of our society who identify as LGBTQ. Throughout the podcast, multiple individuals have voiced support for the school’s decision to isolate the transgender student when changing. Do to the opinions voiced in the podcast regarding this case, I realized that the treatment of the high school student is only one example of the existing discrimination towards those who identify as LGBTQ. As such, I intend to explore the controversy of LGBTQ and our obligations that we have as members of the same society. Throughout this paper, I
American society today is not any different from the past, except today people are apt to discuss everything publicly on various social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram just to name a few. Transgender persons happen to be one of those subjects that have become the hot topic of the new normal. Nowadays there are blogs, tweets, and pictures posted online of people’s transition “coming out.” Like the past, society is still tough when it comes to judging each other. Although transgender might not have had a recognized community in the past, it is prevalent that society is becoming more accepting of their community, and aware of issues their community faces. In this essay the names, nouns, or pronouns used will be in accordance to the individual’s preference.
With the recent Supreme Court ruling on June 26th concerning gay marriage the LGBT community won a long and hard-fought victory after many tiring years of effort. However, as John Oliver so adeptly points out, the fight for full equality still rages on. Oliver dedicated his main segment of his show on Sunday to addressing the issue of transgender rights. This issue concerns a number of facets for transgender people, such as being bullied at school and having a fairly alarming rate of attempted suicide at 41%. As Oliver points out during his segment, this is a civil rights issue, and it will require a deep examination of this country’s values and the way in which we view transgendered people if we truly wish to change our attitudes towards them. Although the arguments for why this matter is a “personal problem”
Inequalities are hard to escape from in today’s society, and all genders and identities have setbacks that need to be sought out and resolved. When most people hear about gender equality, they automatically assume that the speaker is talking about women’s rights, but both men and women have struggles that won’t just go away on their own. On top of that, transgendered people have another weight on their shoulders, no matter which gender they’re transitioning to. The world is constantly moving in different directions, and no matter the gender of an individual, the fact that they deserve the right to equal pay, treatment, education, visibility, and healthcare still stands.
All the articles stated in the annotated bibliography, each of these articles give a background on transgender community, and what a member of a transgender community go through. Additionally, these articles discussed different criticism and reaction good and bad toward people of
Throughout history, differing views on the equality of human rights and beliefs have often sparked highly volatile and deep-rooted conflicts. There are “those who support varying standards of human rights. Others believe that human rights by nature should be universal, and not dependent upon one’s gender or background. Also, there are those that consider both view points and advocate for a middle ground, which serves to accommodate varying beliefs, but still assert a certain degree of universality for human rights.” (Osaka, 2015) It is because of these differing viewpoints that the debate of sex and gender within our society has become an issue of conflict with human rights and standards. This commentary examines transgender rights within our
Colossal verbal harassment and bodily violence accompany the prevalent social stigma confronted by means of transgender people (Clements-Nolles, Marx, & Katz, 2006; Lombardi, Wilchins, Priesing, & Malouf, 2001; Wyss, 2004) and which may very well accompany racial and ethnic inequality and discrimination (Juang, 2006). The Transgender community additionally face eviction from dismissal from jobs, removed from housings, and denial of services, even by cops and clinical emergency specialists (Xavier, 2000; Xavier, Honnold, & Bradford, 2007). Restroom and lavatories, probably the most trivial of public and workplace amenities, mainly grow to be the sites of harassment and disagreement, with access denied to the individuals identified as transgenders (Transgender law center, 2005).
Today I would like to bring a very important issue to your attention that has now crossed land and sea, a global issue. This issue has been circulating the web, social media, school boards, businesses and much more. This controversial issue is equality within the transgender community. I would like to bring this issue to your attention not only because I am part of the human rights campaign but also because it is standing my ground for equality upon all individuals. By supporting transgender equality; the bullying rates will decrease, suicide rates will decrease, and the hate crime rates will decrease.
The bathroom debate is just one small part of what transgender people go through: transgender people have to fight for authenticity as well as equality. An average young person might have ID when buying alcohol or their passport checked at the airport. However trans people’s true gender identity is questioned very often, and in a very different way. For example, for young people or transgender individuals coming out it may be dealing with parents insisting
“41% of people who are transgender have attempted suicide sometime in their life” (Alpert). SIRS researcher writes, “The American Psychiatric Association uses the term ‘gender dysphonia’ as the medical diagnosis for people who feel their birth-assigned sex and their gender identity do not match.” The pro view point are excited that laws have been passed to protect transgender people from discrimination harassment and bullying. While the cons are against the law because they are worried that people will claim the opposite sex to get into the opposite sex’s public restrooms, or locker rooms. This paper will examine the pro, con and my viewpoint on whether we need more laws to protect gender identity or not.
The social issue that I chose which affects society today is transgender inequality. These issues are more recently gaining attention and becoming a prevalent topic of inequality within our country. A transgender person is someone whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth. As more and more transgender people share their stories in the media, the social problems that arise from these stories are discrimination within their everyday lives. They suffer from scrutiny and judgment from their peers, and thus many hide their gender identity from family and society. This social injustice can be as simple as a glance or staring, or offensive comments and questions to violent hate crimes. Transgender people are prone to violence and harassment, and often not feeling safe in any aspect of society. They are fired from jobs, denied medical insurance, and being murdered left and right solely for being transgender. “A staggering 41% of respondents reported attempting suicide compared to 1.6% of the general population, with rates rising for those who lost a job due to bias (55%), were harassed/bullied in school (51%), had low household income, or were the victim of physical assault (61%) or sexual assault (64%)” (National Center for Transgender Equality). The structure of this paper will consist of adding all the research that was gathered over the semester, news articles and peer
