Issues With Prostitution And Human Trafficking

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Thomas Jefferson wrote those words to express the emotions of a nation that desired freedom, and to shake the foundation of the British Empire. However, this simple, but eloquent phrase has sparked one of the greatest debates in American history. Is America a Christian nation? One question has divided the nation and its politicians since the founding and forming of America. This fiery debate has sparked more controversy than any other debate in modern politics.

Sex trafficking, particularly that of children, has become a growing concern in the United States over the past several decades (Kotrla, 2010). By definition, child sex trafficking is “when a child (under 18 years of age) is induced to perform a commercial sex act” (U.S., 2013, para. 4), and includes forms such as prostitution and pornography (Kotrla, 2010). Researchers suggest that children are the most vulnerable to becoming victims of prostitution (Kotrla), and it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 victims in the United States (Estes & Weiner, 2001). Sex traffickers, otherwise known as “pimps,” often lure children with promises of food, clothing, love, and shelter, and then the pimps manipulate the children to keep them in prostitution (U.S. Department of Justice [DOJ], 2015). Awareness of the issue has led to the development of organizations, such as Children of the Night, that seek to help victims escape the sex trafficking industry (Children of the Night [COTN], 2016d).

Sex trafficking is a major problem in the world today and the only way to truly combat it is by raising awareness through the media. I say the media because it is the most effective tool to reach out to world’s largest audience. Although one person has the ability to change the world, it is not enough to change the process of sex trafficking. If everyone right now was able to view real, in depth information on sex trafficking, the problem would not go unnoticed. However, the thought would be out of people’s mind within a week because of some other news article, or video. I propose that we use the mass media to its full potential and rame through every aspect of social media and make the people uncomfortable. By doing this, I believe that it would be a more effective way to to keep the thought of sex trafficking linger in one’s brain enough for them to want to help change the problem.

Prostitution, also referred to as “the oldest profession,” has always been a controversial and challenging social issue. It is practiced in many different forms including: call girls, convention prostitutes, apartment prostitutes, hotel prostitutes, house prostitutes, bar girls, streetwalkers, and parking lot lizards (). Civilizations such as the Samarians, and countries including Morocco and parts of India engaged in a form of prostitution known as temple prostitution. Temple prostitution is based on the belief that “generative activity of human beings possessed a mysterious and sacred influence in promoting the fertility of nature” (Clarkson). In other civilizations, such as the Roman and Byzantine Empires, prostitution was looked upon as less of a religious ceremony, and more of a sin practiced by “women of evil life” (ProCon.org). Today those differentiating view are still present in modern society, but there are also new ideologies surrounding the everlasting presence of prostitution. This Essay will use the Symbolic Interactionism Theory to identify those new ideologies, and evaluate the meaning of prostitution within three relationship: the husband and wife, the Call girl and client, and the Pimp and the sex trafficking victim.

Images of foreign lands usually conjure up when the thoughts of human sex trafficking come to one 's mind. The United States of America is not immune to this type of horrific behavior. America is the land of the free and yet something as awful as human sex trafficking occurs in our very own backyard each and everyday. In addition, according to the United Nations, there is about 32 billion dollars in human trafficking.  Also in the United States, according to the Human Trafficking Center, there is a net worth of 2.5 billion dollars by sexual exploitation or forced labor. In continuation, about 21.5 percent of trafficking is sexual exploitation, 67.9 percent is forced labour, and 10.5 percent is state imposed forced labour.

The pornography debate has been an issue within the feminist movement that has been pushed to the periphery in recent times. It is not as widely seen on the main stage of the feminist agenda and this may be because of a division in feminist thought with regards to pornography. Generally speaking, there are “pro-sex” feminists who believe that women have the right to do what they wish with their bodies and there are “pro-censorship” feminists who believe pornography is inherently degrading and violent towards women. In this paper I am going to discuss the views and opinions held by each faction of the pornography debate and I will discuss the pros and cons of each view and discuss how every day women (i.e. not scholars/academics) feel about pornography.

Sex trafficking is a global problem that involves the exploitation and abuse of girls as well as women. This paper will discuss the problem, with an emphasis on the views expressed by Paola Monzini in her book Sex Traffic: Prostitution, Crime and Exploitation. The paper will look at the causes, consequences and prevalence rates of sex trafficking and will consider the impact of such factors as globalization and women’s poverty in perpetuating the problem or making it worse. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the ways in which a human rights perspective might translate into positive action to eliminate the trafficking of girls and women.

Portland’s street kids face many challenging issues today as the city becomes more diverse. Portland has the highest rate of heroin abuse and sex trafficking in the country. With a large caseload, Suzie knew it would be difficult to assess the new client and write the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). She quickly glanced over the IEP sent from the other school district. She decided to copy the digital IEP and use it for her own files. She noticed that the IEP had been formulated over a year ago, but figured she could just change the date. Plus, when things slowed down next month, she could reassess the new client and rewrite the IEP.

The industry of beating and slavery is the business of sex trafficking. This is not your typical everyday business. The drugging and selling of women for male sexual pleasure are two of many horrific explanations of the industry of sex trafficking. Millions of girls will be forced into this terrible money making trade every year. People around the world must be educated about the disgusting occupation of sex trafficking, and for many appalling reasons, this industry must be controlled and stopped for good.

The participants for this sample will consist of all genders who have a strong idea in prostitution, and sex trafficking. The participants will all consent to a contract to show that they are over the age of 18 given the explicit context of the sincerity of the research, and adhere to the regulations, and policies that will follow. Next, a focused group will be used with all genders to see how each gender is conflicted with the topic at hand. However, to get a better understanding of all participants especially children within this study I will ask parents if they have ever seen children be bought, and sold in sex work.

People, in general, believe there is a trafficking issue but that it doesn’t apply to everywhere in the world. The smaller the county, the less of a problem people believe trafficking is but this is not the case. No matter where in the world or the size of the county trafficking is an issue everywhere. Without specific focus on informing students about the risks and reality of this issue in the world, students are being thrown into society unequipped to protect themselves and others from becoming sex slaves. This issue is not one that should be taken lightly.

It seems as though every issue that is argued by the American people seems to be, in one way or another, debating the age old question of freedom versus equality. The case of Richard Schmidt’s Cambodian adventures in sex tourism certainly argues this question, while at the same time it extends beyond the traditional argument.
