Profile of Ivan Pavlov was born on September 14, 1849 in the village of Ryazan, Russia, the son of Peter Dmitrievich Pavlov, who was the village priest. Because he was the son of a priest he went to church school and enrolled in a theology seminar. As the son of a preacher Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was going to follow in his father’s footsteps, that was until he read a book by Charles Darwin called “The Origin of Species” After reading this book Ivan Pavlov dropped out of his theological studies and enrolled in a Natural Science program in the University of St-Petersburg. He died as a commemorated person in the field of science, a husband and a father of five children (One whom died at birth). Ivan Pavlov was studying the canine digestion; he was studying how the dog salivated before the meal. Pavlov would show the dog food then directly afterwards would ring a bell. The dog would salivate as all animals would, because there was food in front of him. At the end of the experiment Ivan Pavlov realized that he could make the dog salivate without food, but with the ringing of the bell. This wasn’t a new trick Ivan Pavlov had taught his dog but something more. Ivan Pavlov came up with the one of the best know concept of the Behavioral Learning Theory known as the Classic Conditioning. This theory states that animals can have a learned or conditioned response to a stimulus other than the unconditioned stimulus that naturally produces an uncontrolled response. Ivan Pavlov believed that a person could take an unconditioned stimulus that produced an involuntary response and pair it with a neutral stimulus. When both the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus are paired with each other the subject will over time, have the same response to the neutral stimulus as the unconditioned stimulus. Ivan Pavlov stated that in order to get the conditioned response there were some guidelines that needed to be followed.
