“Victory was never in doubt. It is cost was… What was in doubt, in all our minds, was whether there would be any of us left to dedicate our cemetery at the end, or whether the last marine would die knocking out the last Japanese gun and gunner” (Major General B. Erskine)4. An examination of primary or secondary sources will reveal the historical significance of Iwo Jima.
Reverend Tsunzeo Wachi was a reverend of the fourth Marine Division Association was instrumental in arranging the resulting commemoration which occurred on Iwo Jima in February 1985. It was the first such joint American-Japanese World War 2 memorial ceremony. Reverend Wachi also referred to as “the mystery man” graduated from the Eta Jima which is a Naval Academy, in 1973. On the other we have Admiral Chester William Nimitz, Nimitz at the age of 16 entered the United States Naval Academy. He was the youngest plebe in his very class.
Now on to the invasion of Iwo Jima. The Americans were outnumbered and outgunned. The Americans had edge though, that the Japanese knew nothing about. Cryptographers among the Monks of Makalpha had broken the secret Japanese Naval code and were monitoring every radio transmission between Imperial fleet headquarters

First, In addition to providing a fighter escort for B-29 bomber attacks on Japan, the capture of Iwo Jima would neutralize a Japanese Radar station on the island. It would also provide an air defense base to protect the ZY Bombers against Japan and perhaps precipitate a decisive sea battle with the Imperial Japanese Navy. One thing about the battle of Iwo Jima, is although this battle was a high point for American valor, it was a very low point for American strategy. Despite the size, Iwo Jima was considered to have great tactical importance. There were to airfields on the island under Japan control; they would be used by Japanese fighter planes to attack American bombers on their flights to
Iwo Jima was known for one of the most bloody battles in not just the Marine but American history too. The battle began on February 19, 1945 as part of the campaign of the Pacific theatre, and lasted for thirty-six days. Around twenty six-thousand Marines were wounded, which caused Union losses during the battle at Gettysburg. Near the beginning of summer of 1944, American B-29 bombers were ruining the islands. “Iwo Jima proved itself an indispensable asset to the Pacific command.” “Thousands of fighters took off from its runways, and this ‘stepping stone’ served as a staging ground for countless Allied advances.”
The sea invasion of Iwo Jima was and still is the largest of any in all the years of the United States Marine Corps history. This invasion was also the most devastating. More than 26,000 Marines lost their lives while when trying to take over this small volcanic island. Pretty much all of the twenty-one thousand Japanese soldiers protecting the island were killed only two thousand were
On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, at 7:55 AM the Japanese Empire led a surprise attack on the US Naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, that would leave millions of Americans in shock, and heartbroken. Before the attack, the United States kept a low profile on International affairs, and concentrated on the domestic affairs at hand. This tragic moment in American history forever remembered. It is a mournful day for the American people, although, for the Japanese Empire it was an honorable day, one they would call a
he Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest and fiercest battles of the Second World War in which the US Armed Forces captured the Iwo Jima Island from the Japanese. More than 6800 American servicemen lost their lives in the battle and thus the battle has come to known as the deadliest battle in Marine Corps history. Iwo Jima was an island strategically positioned and highly fortified as its three airfields were used to stage attacks on the US at the Pacific War. It was therefore Americas target to capture the island and use it to stage attacks on Japans mainland and use the airfields as emergency landing strips for the US Navy planes damaged during war. According to The Washington Post a small group gathered on Thursday February 18th
The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa were two of the most important American operations in the Pacific Theatre against the Empire of Japan during World War Two. The goal of the two operations was to secure strategically important islands close to Japan to use for bombing campaigns. The battles for Iwo Jima(February-March 1945) and Okinawa f(April-June 1945) killed hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians and helped to win the war for the United States.
Iwo Jima remains the Marine Corps’s deadliest campaign. February 19, 1945 was the day of the initial assault on Iwo Jima. That morning nearly eight hundred vessels, ranging from battleships, cruisers, and destroyers to
3) Japanese strategy was for each Soldier to kill 10 Americans before they themselves are killed (The Battle – Japan’s Iwo Jima Strategy, n.d.). On top of that, Iwo Jima would have to be reinforced significantly if it were going to be held for any length of time, and preparations were made to send sizable numbers of men and quantities of materiel to that island.
If the American Army went ahead with a land attack on the Japanese they would have lost countless
James H. Doolittle was enlisted in the Army’s Signal Corps Reserve on October 1917. He later received flight training on March 1918. James later became very well-known because of his great piloting skills and won several air racing trophies. On April 18, 1942, James led a raid on Japan as the leader of the 79-man squadron (www.angelo.edu.) Five months after the humiliating bombing of Pearl Harbor, USA had enough; we bombed Tokyo, Japan and killed 50 civilians and injuring
The Japanese Pacific Commander, Admiral Yamamoto, believed that in order for Japan to win full control the Pacific, they’d need to take down the US Naval Fleet once and for all. Yamamoto almost chose to attack Pearl Harbour, however America’s land-based air power had gotten much stronger since the bombing of Pearl Harbour on the 7th of December 1941, and believed that attacking Pearl Harbour directly would be too risky, and decided battling them somewhere just out of reach from Pearl Harbour would be ideal.
In the beginning of war, Japanese victory in Pacific terrified West Cost Americans. Partial victory for Americans appeared when Japanese capital Tokyo was bombed. It was less of a material loss but huge in terms of psychological attack. It was followed by the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942 and after that the decisive Battle of Midway Island took place. U.S. aircraft carriers destroyed three out of four Japanese carriers that sabotaged their further plans of invasion and they adopted a defensive strategy.
The United States code broke the Japanese planned ambush, and were able to figure it out before it happened, which prevented them from potentially loosing this fight. On 4th June, the Americans found the Japanese fleet. While the Japanese were re-fuelling, they were quite venerable. This meant that the Americans ambushed the Japanese and destroyed 4 fleet carriers. The Japanese had 322 aircrafts and 5 thousand soldiers on board while these carriers were being destroyed. Japan had major losses on this day, but America didn’t go un injured either. With 147 aircrafts and more than 300 sea men were also taken down. After Japan had their Navy destroyed, it was impossible to recover from. Ever since this incident had accrued, japan was on the defensive side. After all this Japan still wanted to take over the
The battle of Iwo Jima happened because the location of the island was tactically important. Iwo Jima was close enough to the main island of Japan that the U.S. could send fighter jets with bombers to bomb the main island. There were three airfields which could be used for emergency landing bases during the bombing runs. Taking over the airfields would also help stop the Japanese fighter jets shooting down B-29s during bombing runs.
The Battle of Guadalcanal was a very important battleground that ended the Japanese ground advancement in the Pacific area of operations. Also, after they were defeated and removed from the island it showed that they were not an unstoppable foe that resulted in boasting the confidence of the United States and its allies. The amphibious assault that occurred on Guadalcanal was the first amphibious counteroffensive for the United States after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were attempting to build an airfield on the island and gain a foothold that would help to protect their flanks as they continued their offensive campaign through the Pacific. Having an established foothold on Guadalcanal would also give the
Hello, Josh. I too believe that artworks like Iwo Jima should continue in contemporary art. The artistic trend passed down from the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans is beautiful and beneficial to society. The type of art you described is an ode to our history and culture. Sadly, this type of art does not seem to be prevalent as many artists choose to use their talent for digital art. However, art like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans still continues and will continue on especially in Washington D.C. our nations capitol.
