Jack Gantos is a middle aged man. He is one of those people that you would think of in vegas blowing all his money to try and win it all. For him there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, because he is full of hope. He never finished high school, left after his junior year. His grades are what you would call awful. Although his grades did not reflect it he is a brilliant human being, with a desire to be a writer. He loves trying new things. He often takes road trips and jumps from job to job with the changing of towns he lives in. he states the sudden moves are to find new and better things to write about. He has little to no money because he spends it on beer and weed. Likely to trust any man standing next to him he tries his luck in becoming a drug dealer but fails to do so and ends up living back with his dad in san juan.
Jack wasn't the kind of writer that thought things would just come to him if he decided to sit and wait. He knew the best stories came from the worst situations. Some might say that he made bad decisions and ended up in the wrong places or that he could do so much better. What they did not realize is that he is the one that chose to do those things and live in those kinds of places, he loves it. That is the kind of lifestyle that he wanted to live. Often he spent the night at run down hotels or apartments where most people would not even think of spending the night at. In his mind they were cheap, everyone watched your back, and looked the other
As well as Ralph, Jack experiences isolation but in a much different way. In Jack’s case, isolation affects him in a very negative and uncivilized way. Jack sees being on the island as a getaway from everything. At home the boys always had rules and instructions to follow. They are use to having a government and then try to recreate that on the island. Being on the island for Jack, it gives him a sense of freedom because here, he does not have to live up to anyone's expectations, there is no rules for him to follow, there is no adults to tell him what to do. “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English and the English are best at everything. So we’ve got to do the right things.”. At first, Jack was about
Persevering through hard times can come with great rewards. During the novel, Breakthrough by Jack Andraka, Jack is bullied at school, but he eventually perseveres and helps increase the survival rates for people with pancreatic cancer. When Jack’s only “friend”, Uncle Ted, dies of pancreatic cancer it encourages Jack to find a test that is cheap and easy to help with early detection. While Jack is trying to find a lab to do research, he receives many rejections; “During that week a third rejection letter arrived. And a fourth. And a fifth.” (117). Jack gets discouraged because he receives rejection after rejection, but he remains persistent and finally receives space at a lab after two months of waiting. Later in the book, Jack
At the beginning, Jack was a very solitary man. Jack’s family left him and he became a drunkard. The text states “He started drinking, spending all his money on whiskey.” (34) This demonstrates how his family leaving him impacted him deeply and he became lonely made wrong choices because of that, therefore losing the money he had. Another example is when “One night Jack was
Throughout the book I learned that Jack is a bit irresponsible and troublesome for a brainiac kid. He is a history buff and would much rather read a dictionary before even touching The Hunger Games or anything like that… because Jack is terrified of death. In the summer of 1962 he is has to learn how to cope with his fears. In fact one main theme in this book is growing up. But before he does, he gets himself into a ton of trouble from firing a sniper rifle to mowing down his mom’s corn. Now he is grounded for the summer! His vacation plans are completely
His father figure may have not been the best role model for Jack because that might have been the reason that he develop his, “bad habits” (Loveday) of drinking. The author of The Call of the Wild did not live the longest life though because he died at age forty but he did create many works of literature still familiar to people today. He even experienced journeys or adventures that most would not have endure ever in one’s lifetime. Jack London was paid a great sum of money for his works but could never recover from his “reckless living” (Watson). Jack attempted to tame his wild ways of life by getting married but this was unsuccessful and instead “…caged him” (Watson). The author of this book at first lived life in a more civilized way at first it was go to school, learn, than go back home but at young age he was pulled out of school to work “various odd jobs” (Funk & Wagnalls). When Jack was old enough he, “…participated in the Alaska gold rush. Upon his return began to write about his experiences.” (Funk & Wagnalls)Not only did he write about his experiences in the book but also his socialist views. For example in The Call of the Wild it states, “A majority of men who has witnessed the making of the bet decided in his favor whereat the odds went up to
He saw that most people when given paradise, will destroy themselves because of one bad decision after each other. Jack had the same mindset of Hobbes, they both believed that a powerful leader would help keep everyone in check. Mankind will never be at peace with each other because everyone has different opinions about different things and we will never agree with each other. The island might have been built up faster and better if Jack took the lead on the island. He would have his strength and words to scare the others so they would do what he told them to do. The basis of the story is that people will destroy each other just to get better than another, the kids on the island were not mature enough to help the fact that every kid had a different opinions and
In the beginning of this chapter, Justin was still thinking about what happened in Ms.Keller’s class that day. Megan invited him to go somewhere today, but he was already going over to Jinsen’s house to help him with a project for art. As he walked over to Jinsen’s house he noticed an old lady leaving it. When Justin walked in the house it was still dark and cold inside. They talked about how Justin’s dad is an artist and if he comes over to his house he can show Jinsen. In Justin’s mind he noticed he had just invited Jinsen over his house and was fine with it. As they were working Justin asked where his parents were. Little did he know that his parents were dead and that the old lady was his great aunt. Justin was mad because he thought no person should live a life like how Jinsen was living his. They took a break from working and went to Jinsen’s room. It was amazing, an unending mural with gods and religious things. Jinsen said he didn’t have a religion and doesn’t believe in that stuff. They left his room and continued working on the banner for art class.
Jack’s anger caused a lot of negative outcomes, because he was angry it caused him to do the unthinkable, and lose civility. He killed one of the boys, he hurt a lot of
As for Jack Gantos, he was a broke college student trying to find ways of earning money, and had big dreams of becoming a writer. As any kid in school would they always fall into prier pressure and from there Jack started smoking weed. One thing lead to another
Jack had gotten sick. Very sick. The kind of sick where all you want to do is sleep your life away because you are so congested and your head hurts so much and so that’s exactly what you do. Jack was stuck in the hotel room for three days when it was only a five day trip. He missed one game and was feeling completely awful.
6. Johnny Mac – His strategy is just like Becky’s and he’s just coasting by. He’s just hanging out with the houseguest and it seems people talk game with him around but it’s like he’s non-existent. Johnny Mac is probably safe for weeks in this game.
In the scenes where it shows his condo filled with new IKEA furniture and working hour accompanied by Starbucks Coffee and KrisyCream donuts as if his life was an advertisement further demonstrates that Jack is a man whose sense of identity is overpowered by consumer values and media ideologies . His subconscious makes him believe commodities define his prestige. As a result Jack suggests that consumption leads to meaningless subjectivity by saying, “I love that condo. I loved every stick of furniture. That was not just a bunch of stuff that got destroyed; it was me.”
Throughout this novel, Jack is reflecting on his own life, trying to piece together the events of the past that have led him to his present. In doing so, he jumps around his life, starting in the middle, then going farther back into the past to include more about how they got to that point in time. Because he was so interested in history when he was younger, you would think he would keep the chronological order in time, that history typically follows, yet this is written from the present, where Jack is ready to move on to new events. Because of this, Jack is able to realize and highlight important events with this flawed sense of time, possibly even discovering the whole truth about his life. He also uses the believed beginning of time to help
All envious entities start off ordinary people who have something to live for and people who care for them no matter what. Both Jack and Minh Nguyen started off ordinary people. Jack was just a choir leader and Minh Nguyen was just an average man who dreamt of being an Entrepreneur. Jack was respected by the crew on the island and wanted to survive similar to the majority of the kids on the island. In parallel Minh Nguyen was a married man living an amazing life, “known for helping launch the company Plaxo (Pagliery (CNN)).” Indeed they were just regular people who fit in properly with society and had nothing wrong with their lives at the moment, except for the fact that Jack was stuck on an island. Occasionally these normal people lose someone
He heard stories sometimes, stories of men who created problems just for a pay check. Mickey, a man he was long ago acquainted with, was rumoured to have initiated forest fires in order to be employed by the fire department. Jack rued the day the state of his situation declined so severely he had no other choice than to resort to such disconcerting acts. He wondered if the men and women surrounding him had ever envisioned themselves participating in such delinquency. It was that moment Jack became conscious of the fact that these people had lives, comprised of their own experiences, desires, and struggles. It felt surreal, being in the midst of a bustling crowd yet at the same time, being so isolated. He sliced like a knife through everything; at the same time was outside, looking on.
