Jack London once said “The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time”. What this means is that one should live their life by going out of their boundaries and making their life dangerous and worthwhile, not just being a sitting duck doing nothing. It also means that he will live dangerously and take risks no matter if he will die because he will die with a life well lived. This relates to extreme sports because people who do not live their life dangerously and risky, unlike extreme sports people, have not lived their life with excitement, they have just lived a bland life. On the other hand though, extreme sports people live their life past the boundaries of a safe life and although they may die early, they still lived their life with an amazing backstory and doing the sport they loved. Dr. Brymer, a QUT researcher who was mentioned in “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-Taking: Study”, would agree with what Jack London has said. He believes that one should live their life going out of their boundaries while being safe and calculated. He said “While there is an …show more content…
Some people may say that Extreme Sports are too dangerous and that it’s practically suicide. I understand where these people are coming from but most people who believe that extreme sports are too dangerous have never felt the feeling that extreme sports gives. The writer, Lola Jones, author of “A Solemn Warning To Wingsuit Flyers”, is one of the many people that believe extreme sports are dangerous and should not be participated in. In her article she notes that all extreme sports are dangerous and have such a high death rate that no one should do them because you could throw your life away with one wrong miscalculation. Lola Jones does have a valid argument that one should live their life, but live it very safely. That is not what I believe
Rest in peace Robson for jumping off like a smart man . The issue of extreme sports has different points of view, however i believe extreme sports should only be in mind for people who wish to do them. These so called “risk takers” aren't really risk takers. They do it for the fun, the feeling that you get after doing something you've been wanting to do for a while is probably one of the best feelings you could ever feel.
Throughout generations in literature, “to live deliberately” has been the goal and purpose of life. As Alexander Supertramp (aka Chris McCandless) said, “The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun” (57).
Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one’s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks.
Citizens of America seek thrill and excitement. Whether this is in the form of concerts or snorkeling in the waters off the coast of Hawaii. However, others choose to go to the extreme and participate in the utmost endeavours. These thrill seekers may go through intense training before taking place in these activities. Accidents, although, do happen. Individuals cannot predict all that will transpire. People have a moral obligation to save others in need.
All the quotes have to do something about risk or do something about risk and caution. “Security is a kind of death” , that means take a risk or do something about your life. People that do extreme sport don't care about their safety. They care about livin’ it to the fullest. They don't care about their safety because some people hate to be bored so they found extreme sports.
What London means by his quote, “The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time,” is that men should be using their time living doing a little of extreme entertainment than not doing anything. London is incorrect, men should be using their time very wisely because you don’t know when will be your last moments. Therefore, if you do extreme, it can in any moment get out of hand and lead to someone getting hurt or even close to death.
First, I think it is important to identify what a dangerous sport is. A dangerous sport is a sport that creates significant risk for the participants, which could cause serious impairments to one's ability to function normally on a day-to-day basis. Rules are in place to avoid serious injury,
Professor of Psychology and management director of Quality of Life Research Center at the Claremont Graduate University, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, discusses in an excerpt from Flow: The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life his theory of “flow” and how we can find it. “If we really want to live, we’d better start at once to try; if we don’t, it doesn’t matter, but we’d better start to die.” (Csikszentmihalyi 1) is a quote by W.H. Auden that Csikszentmihalyi says shows what his book is really about. We have to decide now whether we want to live or to die. “To live,” means to live in fullness by not wasting any time and to express your own uniqueness. Csikszentmihalyi uses an example of leading a good life about a man named Joe who worked
According to Lola Jones, once people try an extreme sport they love it. In the 12th paragraph of the article, the author talks about how people love wingsuit flying, although they are well aware of the risks that come along with it (Jones 12). After taking a risk by doing an extreme sport, many people find a passion for it. This shows that there is something extremely likeable about taking a risk. This proves that although taking a risk is initially scary, it is something many people actually enjoy. Not only do extreme sports provide a hobby, they also can help to calm you
While people are responsible for their actions and choices, sometimes the unthinkable can happen. “The Cost of Survival” states that “Some people wind up in trouble because of bad luck, but others make dangerous choices” (Tucker 4). Military weapons malfunctioning or a sick child stranded at sea are things no one ever saw coming. Those people did not choose to be put into that survival situation. However, there are some people that actively put their lives on the line for the thrill of it.
Extreme Sports , to me extreme sports is a sport that allows you to feel rush and excitement. Not only that but speed. Example of an extreme sport is skydiving or snowboarding. Skydiving is a extreme sport , why ? because it’s dangerous there can be many injuries such as landing wrong, broken bones , and parachute not opening. Snowboarding is also an extreme sport there in the are many injuries that could happen like fall on hands , knees , or head. These can happen and had happen in the past like kevin pearce he was an professional snowboarder before an accident in 2009 that left him with traumatic brain injury.
The characterization/point of view as a stylistic device that teaches the theme the man in the story that Jack London introduces as the main character is simple-minded. He enjoys traveling and wandering but he doesn't pay attention to how cold the temperature in the Yukon River territory has gotten. The story talks about the man spitting into the air and the spit crackling because the temperature has gotten so far beneath zero degrees - this imagery shows the man's simplicity. The character does not pay attention - he doesn't think critically about his surroundings but seems to meander along. Throughout the essay there is a lot of imagery - from describing the Yukon River valley with different color descriptions to the setting sun, from the
The word “risk” means the possibility of suffering a harmful event. Risk taking can bring either positive or negative result because anytime we take risks in life, there is a possibility of loss which can cause tension. There are a lot of people who take big risks and appear not to be affected by them. But, many of us feel very uneasy when faced with risk-taking; we may become worried about the risk. Although some people are content in life by just playing it safe and not courting any
“Cool” can be expressed through the courage that people have to experience new things, including taking risks. What makes skydiving cool is that it presents a new thrilling experience that not many get to have. Combined with the potential risks and the overall experience, skydiving has many appeals that can be considered as “cool” to the functional aesthetics of a person. Skydiving embodies this concept of “cool” because it takes nerve to overcome the perceived risk of death to jump out a moving plane. It is a unique experience that individuals should put on their bucket list because it gives the skydivers the opportunity to explore new feelings that they often would not experience in their normal life. Therefore, the purpose of the project is to inform and persuade the audience to skydive because it does not only illustrate “cool”, but it also functions as stress release.
Most people have heard about Copyright laws and plagiarism, but not everyone knows the full extent of the protection Copyright laws provide, or the penalties of plagiarizing. First I will go over Copyright law, what can be Copyrighted, what having a Copyright lets you do, the penalties of Copyright infringement, and fair use. Next I will go over plagiarism, what can be plagiarized, the punishments of plagiarism, and the techniques that can be used to avoid plagiarism. And finally I will go into how Copyright law and plagiarism relate to each other, as well as talking about the public domain.
