Ever since he was able to go to school, he has been a fellow classmate of Webster High School Class of 2019. In his ongoing high school years, and way before that, he has been involved with sports, for as long as he can remember. His father, Jarrod Washburn, former player for three Major League Baseball teams, had inspired him to play baseball. Jack Washburn’s first job, even included baseball. He has the opportunity to teach young kids about the sport of baseball; he likes the idea of being able to help others who are interested in learning about something he really cares for. Besides baseball, he does have other interests. Jack is also a fan of basketball, and connecting with the outdoors by hunting, fishing, and hiking.

Nick is incredibly smart; he is taking two classes at GPC and two more classes at Chattahoochee High School. He earns high grades in all his classes. Nick has been in the band for over ten years and plays three different instruments. He plays the trumpet, baritone, and trombone. Nick is also a member of the Chattahoochee marching band. In addition, Nick is very passionate about umpiring. He has been umpiring as a hobby and a job for a year. In fact, he has mastered it so well that he is currently being scouted by the major leagues. Along with umpiring, Nick also coaches the eighth-grade Chattahoochee football team and sits high on the board of directors. Despite all of these activities, Nick still finds time to hang out with his friends. They play many sports together such as football, baseball, basketball, and volleyball. Nick is a very busy person but he is still able to balance everything due to his hard working
However, Jack was not interested in any sort of physical activity. “I’m tall and slender - my dad says ‘scrawny,’ and he’d been encouraging me to lift weights since I was twelve. ‘Bulk up and it’ll pay off across the board,’ he assured me. ‘Coaches will see it, girls will notice, and you’ll be able to shovel our driveway faster.’” (Klass 5). After Jack is forced to play a sport for his senior year, he was invited to a private football tryout. Jack was very reluctant before trying out for the football team yet Mr. Logan, who secretly attended the tryout, encouraged Jack to do it. “My dad had been in on the plan. ‘Just try,’ he encouraged at the breakfast table the next day.” (Klass 18). Mr. Logan was pleased with Jack’s effort and success during the tryout. “You did good, son. I’m proud of you.” (Klass 25). When Jack had the opportunity to play football and he turned it down, Jack’s father originally outwardly supported his decision. “‘Okay,’ he said, ‘then don’t.’” (Klass 34). However, the abrupt and short response may be suggested that Mr. Logan may not have been completely approving of Jack’s rejection of the football team. This did not interfere with the love between Jack and Mr. Logan and this is shown during Mr. Logan’s jersey retirement at Fremont High School. Although Jack initially rejected being a part of the ceremony, it was

Author Kris Vervaecke wrote an essay titled, "A Spectator's Notebook," for Writers in Sports. She talked about sports and how they affect different generations. Vervaecke supports her claim by showing how much she loves sports and by using her children as examples throughout the essay. Her son, Ben, represents strength, determination, and talent because of how successful he was in golf, and before he leaves for college he puts in Michael Jordan’s Air Time, that united Ben and Vervaecke. On the other hand, Vervaecke’s daughter, Emily, is a bench-warmer and was told she is only smart not athletic, so she was “benched” in the classroom. She then talks about her other son, Andrew, and describes him as the true athlete of the family because of how much people liked him. Vervaecke’s purpose is to show that sports are not just about something fun to do or watch, but can have a motivational impact that can affect someone's emotions, and she does this by developing an influential tone. Although Vervaecke mainly talks about her experiences and her childrens throughout the essay, her experiences apply to many students across the country. Many student-athletes are very successful in their futures because of what sports have taught them. Students should be involved in sports because student-athletes learn responsibility, how to manage their time, and take care of their psychological

Some schools with strong sporting traditions reinforce participation in sport. The sports that students are encouraged to participate in can depend on the school’s history and traditions, the facilities and equipment available, and the expertise of the teachers.
Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have
Miami Senior High’s golf team began the 2016 season with a fairly inexperienced team. Coach Upperco expressed his bittersweet feelings towards retiring from Miami Senior High after many years of devotion to not only his students but his athletes as well, by assuring that next season’s team, which will be coached by Mr. Zuniga, will be “one of the top teams in Miami Dade County.” The team captain, Wendy Chong, said the “biggest challenge” she faced as captain was that she was in the process of learning a new sport as she had the pressure to be a strong leader for the rest of the team.
Shawn Partin spent his life playing baseball. From the time he was four years old he was on some sort of baseball field, “we lived right across from the field, so my mom and I would walk over there after I got home from kindergarten every day with my tee and a bat and a ball and we would hit through,” says Partin. So when he injured his shoulder in high school, he was devastated, “it wasn’t career ending, but it still set me back. In my mind, I was a failure.” This led him down a ‘rabbit hole’ where he struggled to recover and became very depressed. Eventually he struggled with substance abuse and was forced to quit baseball, giving up the chance to play baseball at a Division I university, and the dream of being in the Major League Baseball League.

Sports was a part of my life growing up - whether it was attending games with my family to support the Huskies at Rentschler Field or Wolfpack hockey games at the Hartford Civic Center or even being part of a basketball team since before middle school, I have grown to love the atmosphere that sport brings. Whether it was assisting my Mom coach in our town’s T-Ball league or working with the disabled or even with the students at Wish Elementary School, through sports, I have been able to build a solid sense of a wider community. It is not just about the game itself but it is about what happens in-between and after. It is the indescribable bonds that form between
