The damages were catastrophic as houses lay in ruin and debris littered the roads. There were mudslides and fallen rocks that paved the roads and made them impassible for vehicles to get through. Ultimately by the roads being clogged up the response time by rescue workers and essential personal were hampered. This also made it exceptionally difficult for supplies to be rushed to the locations for the earthquake survivors. As some were digging and excavating for survivors they were being halted by aftershocks and falling debris from above. Approximately 8000 people were killed either by their houses caving in or by the other disasters this earthquake triggered. It was a real life tragedy that
On April 18, 1906, in San Francisco, California there was an earthquake that was a major geological disaster that affected people in many ways. According to www.History.com, San Francisco had a population of around 400,000, and 3,000 people. The earthquake destroyed over 28,000 buildings and around 250,000 people became homeless. The damage costs were $500 in 1906. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated to be a 7.8, but only lasted for 1 minute. The earthquake started many fires that burned for days and destroyed around 500 city blocks. The earthquake could be felt from Los Angeles to southern Oregon, and in central Nevada. This earthquake was caused by the transform plate boundary from the pacific and North American plates. The 2 plates rubbed against each other creating the earthquake. (decodedscience.org).
What: In Nepal near Kathmandu there was a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. It killed about 8,000 people and injured nearly 18,000 people. It affected 8 million
Consequently, it would have led to contamination of the water and the spread of disease. 230 square miles of forest burned and got destroyed. This would have a great effect on the logging industry because there would not be as many trees for them to cut down. In addition to this it would have a great effect on wildlife as 1000s of animals' homes would have been destroyed. It destroyed or extensively damaged over 200 homes, destroyed/ damaged 185 miles (300 km) of road and destroyed/ damaged 15 miles of railways. Airports closed (from 2days → 2 weeks). Over a thousand commercial flights were cancelled following airport closures. Lastly, unemployment rose rapidly after eruption.
Not only did the Earthquake of 64? claim the lives of around 131 people in Alaska alone as well as 16 deaths between Oregon and California. For an earthquake this size, the death toll was actually quite small, but this was due to the low population, the time of day in which it occurred as well as the fact it was a holiday. It also caused about $2.3 billion, in property damages. Luckily due to wood frame construction, as well as low-rise structures and the modesty urban density, this helped to limit the fatalities. As a result of the earthquake there were several ground fissures and failures that caused major structural damage, as well as property damage. One of the towns greatly affected by the event was Anchorage. They suffered severe losses such as homes, buildings, streets, sidewalks, electrical systems, among other things. Additionally, the Port of Valdez was affected by a major landslide. In the collapse of the city harbor, the docks, and the ship that was docked, 30 people perished. Coincidentally, during this time, a 27 foot tsunami tore though the village of Chenega, which resulted in the
How many people were affected by the disaster? (died, had to move, were affected by, etc.)
The effect of the disaster on the community was massive as it dramatically affected the tourism and fishing, restaurants and beaches, for the people who have livelihood depend on tourism and fishing, it led to many job losses.
Millions were made homeless by the huge waves that swept houses and cars away. It was estimated that the costs to repair all damage would be at approximately $5 billion.
Imagine you are in the country Haiti and you are sitting in your house in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince. You are sitting in your living room and talking to your family when you begin to feel the ground shake. You all look around confused for a second until you realize it is an earthquake. You watch in terror as things begin to fall on the ground and break. Then, you hear a loud noise from above. You look up and watch as the ceiling begins to collapse. You and your family are only a few out of many victims of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. The Haiti Earthquake was the most devastating earthquake to ever hit Haiti. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck about 16 miles away from the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Because Haiti was a very poor country at the time, over 230,000 people lost their lives. The quake also caused at least 50 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or higher. The 2010 Haiti Earthquake greatly damaged the country, and it also affected the economy and people.
Over 6000 people died in the earthquake, 30,000 were injured and 300,000 were left homeless. approximately 80% of the people that died were crushed to death by falling buildings or furniture. 150,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. 1km of the Hanshin expressway collapsed during the earthquake. Approximately 120 out of 150 of Kobe’s ports were destroyed. The fire following the earthquake then burnt 1km2 of the suburban area. Emergency services were unable to reach all of the affected areas because of the damaged roads. Hospitals were very crowded and there was a lack of medical
The Effect it has on people that survived ,is that there family, and friends might not of lived through it. Also a lot of houses were flattened
There also the issue of health impact that was addressed in the film. There were several people who were injured physically and mentally from the aftermath of the earthquake. For example Yuuki was struck by large piece of metal after a radio tower happen to fall. Due to this he received a concussion and because he didn’t proper brain treatment for it he eventually died. This was a similar cause of actual deaths that occurred in earthquakes. In real life there have been medical researchers in Japan that have perform some health surveys amongst the population to measure the condition of health after enduring these earthquakes. It was later determined more research would be required to resolve some long term mental illnesses that affect patients.
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake of 9.0 magnitude shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a terrible tsunami. Its repercussions were felt around the world, from Norway's fjords to Antarctica's ice sheet. Even up till today, about 230,000 people are still living in temporary housing. This example is only one of the many kinds of disasters that happen continually in the world.
Many people lost their homes, and students lost their opportunity of education for a period of time. Later it was found that some buildings were too loosely structured; partly because of corruption. Some workers did not do their best to build the buildings. In addition, the communication network was destroyed. In Sichuan, Chongqing and Huabei, the communication was completely jammed. The traffic network was also disrupted. Many highways or railways were cracked due to great vibrations, and the international airport in Chengdu was closed. The roads must be closed for maintenance. These have led to difficulty in relief work. Finally, some victims of the earthquake stole or robbed stuff. After the earthquake, there were more crimes committed by the victims.
On October 15th an earthquake killed nearly 90 people. In the Philippines killed nearly 200 and displacing tens of thousands of dollars. The quake wrecked about more than 45,000 homes. These earthquakes have affected many people, damaging homes and even lives and causes millions of dollars for repairs. The quake, the strongest to hit the disaster-prone country in recent years, struck Bohol on October 15th. Felt across several neighbouring provinces, more than 2,500 aftershock have rippled through the region since.(Documents
The Sichuan Earthquake was a natural disaster that shook the lives of many people living in China. The earthquake caused over 1 trillion RMB (about US $146.5 billion) in property damaged and killed over 65,000 people (Wikipedia Contributors, 2015). Friends and family were lost, people were thrown into poverty, and there seemed to be no hope. The Sichuan Earthquake had a huge impact in China due to it’s intensity and devastating casualties.
