Jake and Baseball
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Jake. He liked to play baseball, and he was good at it. The problem was, Jake didn’t have any friends.
One day, Jake saw a kid playing baseball, and Jake asked, “What is your name?”
The boy said, “My name’s Travis.”
Jake asked if he could play baseball with him, and Travis said yes.
They played for a while. When they were done playing, they went home. Jake and Travis were both in grade ten, and they went to the same school.
The next day at school, the baseball team had try-outs. Jake and Travis both tried out. They made them do throwing, hitting, and running drills. Mr. Smith, the teacher, said they would reveal who’s on the team tomorrow. Jake and Travis really wanted to be on the

Jake and Travis’s names were both on the list, they were relieved. Their practices started that day. One kid named Evan got cut, and Jake and Travis were shocked.
Their first game would be next week against the Falcons. The Falcons were their arch enemies, so they had to practise.
When the game arrived, they won. Jake hit the winning home run. After that game, a guy Jake didn’t know came up to him and asked him if he wanted to play in the league. Jake said yes, and the man said, “Then come to our next practice at two o’clock tomorrow.”
Jake said, “I’ll be there.”
The next day, when he went to the practice, he was not the best one there, so he practised and practised.
Two years later, Jake was in grade twelve, and he was still in the league. They had their biggest game of the season coming up, and he was told scouts were going to be there.
The day after the game was over, Jake wanted to get a call from a scout, but he didn’t. He was angry.
One week later, the phone rang, and a man in a deep voice was on the other end. “Hello, I’m John. I’m the coach for the New York Ravens. I saw you play, and I want you on my team,” the man said. “What do you say?” Jake said
Since Jake is the bigger man of the two he calmly walks away. After that his friend Sarah tells him that she was very proud of him walking away from the altercation and that he shouldn’t let Casey get to him. Later on in the week the coach announces that Jake will be the new starter. Casey wasn’t so happy about so Jake walked up to him and told Casey no hard feelings.
It was a hot summer day, and Jackson was at his house getting ready for his baseball game. He was very anxious because if his team won the game they would be able to qualify for a tournament, that a lot of teams from other states would be participating in. But, before all of that came they needed to win this game. Jackson got his hat and went to the car, where his dad was waiting for him. On the way to the field his dad encouraged him to try his best and help his team. An hour later after they warmed up, the game started. Then, two hours later, the game ended and Jackson's team won four to two.
The Calvary Christian dugout erupted as Johnny Field hit a walk-off homerun to win the Florida High School Baseball Championship, which was the biggest game of the year. Scotty Stanton, the Columbus Explorers center fielder, walked off the field in misery. “I can’t believe I went 0-4 in front of all these pro scouts,” Stanton muttered. After the two teams lined up to shake hands after a hard fought game, Field approached Stanton, “So much for being the number one player in the state Scotty, maybe those scouts were looking for a bat boy, because that’s all you will ever be.” Stanton watched the scouts walk up to Field and introduce themselves. The scouts did not say one word to Stanton, who was projected to be drafted in this upcoming MLB Draft.
Chris Givens was a middle school boy and he loved to play baseball. Chris lived and breathed baseball. He would watch every game he could. Also, the only sport he played was baseball so he was the best at it. However, there was one problem for Chris. He was not one the most popular kids. Only the most popular kids were picked onto the school's baseball team. Chris had tried to act cool and even hang out with cool kids, but it never worked out. Even though Chris was not like everyone on the baseball team he is determined to be the first kid to make the baseball who wasn’t popular.
The sun has risen and a young boy jumps out of bed with excitement, as he knows today he gets to go to his first professional baseball game. His father had bought him the tickets for his birthday months ago, and the boy had been counting down the days ever since. He put on his favorite ‘Cleveland Indians’ shirt, and ran downstairs to eat his yogurt and waffles for breakfast. As he ate, his mother saw him happily drawing Jacob’s Field, using his brown crayon to put the finishing touches on the base paths. The boy had a penchant attitude for baseball, as it was the first game his father ever taught him to play, and because of that, he would play whenever he could; with rocks and a stick, with his friends in the yard, and in his head when he

Emerson was really nervous now. She glanced over at the dugout and saw her teammates up against the chain-link fence. She kept telling herself “I can do this...I can do this…” as she watched the pitcher step up to the mound. She loaded up her swing and went for it. She felt something, she had made contact! She thought to herself as she rounded first base, “it’s gone” and it was! The whole field broke into a thunder of cheers. As she rounded third base and saw her teammates and coaches waiting for her, she screamed “for Jess!” and the whole team screamed “for Jess!” as Emerson pounced on home plate. After all the cheering was over and the girls shook each other’s hands, someone came over the intercom and said “Wildcats for the champion!
David and Brad were teenage rivals. They went to different high schools and competed against each other in almost every sport growing up. David, tall and handsome was talking to Brad who was excited to share the news of his victory the night before. “I got to second base last night! I was in a slump and striking out but I finally made some good plays!” Brad, a little awkward was much shorter than David and not quite as popular. David didn’t believe Brad at all and said, “Sure you did, since when did you get so lucky?” Brad was a bit hurt and wanting to flaunt his prowess to David he blurted, “Oh course I did. I am on a winning streak. Tonight I am going for a Home run!” David, a little jealous and feeling a bit insecure was not sure what

They ran to the baseball fields, darted into the concession stand and locked the door. It looked like someone had left in a hurry because the door had been left partially open. Chris spotted a laptop that was sitting on the counter. There was a blog post on the computer that dated back to the year 2000. It was obvious that someone had been reading the post. The post was about the Little League World Series championship. There was a picture of the pitcher from the defeated team in the blog. It looked like a younger version of the concession stand manager. Chris asked what the name of the concession stand manager was. Then he saw a nameplate that read Brad Low. The name Brad Low was on the screen.
After we all introduced ourselves to each other we walked over to a big area with bases. “Who should be on each team,” Nick asked. “I don't care let's just make them even,” Gracie said. We all divided ourselves up into teams and started playing. My Team was in the field while Nick's team was up to kick. Nick was the first kicker up, and I was pitching. Gracie, Kenzie, Cody, and Ethan were behind me getting ready for Nick to kick. I pitch nick the ball then “wham!” The kickball went right into Gracie’s face. It hit her pretty good. We took a timeout until we decided to go back to the camper and do something else.
What a beautiful day. Sun’s out, flowers are all bloomed, boys playin’ baseball at the ballpark across the street. Today just couldn’t be better. I see those boys and I can’t help remembering what could have been. I am now 73 but when I was younger, I was a natural ballplayer. Baseball was my life. I would get compliments almost daily of how well I’d played the night before. It was my life. Suddenly in the middle of nowhere I seemed to be growing younger! The world around my was changing! As all this was happening I walked down to the ballpark. I was my 12 year old self! My old buddies, most of whom had now passed away, were playing. “Ryder! What’s up man?” Julian said. I was so startled that it was actually him I was nearly brought to tears. After a warm welcome from my buddies, Jackson tossed me a bat and told me I was up at the plate. I stepped into the box, I could smell the dirt, the grass, everything. It was so wonderful. I picked up some dirt, rubbed it on my hands and was ready to go. Jackson came set, ready to deliver the first pitch I’d seen in the last 50 some odd years. He lifted his leg, pulled his arm back, and strode towards home plate. The ball left his hand, I could see every seam, every dirt mark on that ball. I started my motion, the ball was right there. All I could focus on was hitting that dang ball.
