In the poem, Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, we see a mother writing/reading to her daughter a list of things she must follow to prevent her from becoming a “slut”. Instead she will grow to become a proper woman. The speaker of the poem, which is relayed to be a mother figure of some sort, is trying to make sure that “girls” grow to be strong and beautiful women. All of the things Kincaid is saying to her daughter, are things she has grown to know and learn, she is simply passing them down. The poem reaches its audience specifically through pathos and logos. In Kincaid’s poem she is simply telling all young women how to act, dress and talk while growing up under the eyes of society. She uses logos to get her message across clearly. Her poem is more of a list than a poem, it contains the “what to dos” and “what not to dos”. Logos is expressed through logic. Logic being the key component of this poem. The mother, or Kincaid, is telling her daughter the logical things. Such as, how to act in front of men, how to iron clothing, how to grow foods, how to treat others. Like any other girl growing up she is having to choose to fight against society or fight against her mother. The girl is in the teenage years, the years for exploration and “finding your true self” all while her mother is on her back about things that will make her or break her. The writer of the poem uses three of the four things off of the rhetorical triangle. Pathos to pull the audience in and take them on an emotion roller coaster. She also uses kairos and logos to get her audience’s attention, along with the tone. The emotion of the poem is what makes it so relatable and wide spread. The relationship between a mother and a daughter, the relation to today’s society and the tone of the mother’s voice throughout the poem make it a great piece.
