James Baldwin's Imperfection Of The American Dream

James Baldwin an activist of his time was born during the Jim Crow era of the 20th century. Being an African American during this time made imperfections of the American dream and society learned at an early age. He was able to see injustice happen right in front of him and had many years to ponder over its cause and solution. I will analyze and critique the claims Baldwin gives as the causes of this injustice and how fixing each would lead to a better American dream and society. Baldwin said “in short, we, the black and the white, deeply need each other here if we are really to become a nation.”(97) Baldwin would rather see one unified nation between blacks and whites than a nation where they are competing for power. He states “There is certainly no need for two, one black and one white. However, “How can one respect, let alone adopt, the values of a people who do not want, on any level whatever, live the way they say they do, or the way they say they should?”(96) Baldwin is saying that America could be a leading nation in ethics and transform other nations much like how the constitution has impacted other governments also. When something is proven real or obtainable and not a façade people begin to want to reach for that reality or object. If American was able to realize its true potential then many nations would want to realize that potential also. Developed and under-developed nations would take note of the possibilities of government now that they have America to look to as an honest example of the possibilities of human interaction and
