James Dean once said, “If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, I mean, if he can live on after he 's died, then maybe he was a great man.” James Dean probably did not know he would be a man that would qualify for this statement at the time it was said, but there is no doubt that he lived to achieve it (Howlett 1). James Dean is an important American figure because he represented a powerful character to many people, was a very popular and successful actor, and he was able to encourage a new way of thought among a not-so-expressive society. He did however have one serious relationship towards the beginning of his career. The girl’s name was Liz Sheridan and she was engaged to James. After his engagement ended, he still managed to have countless lovers. He was even rumored to having an affair with Marilyn Monroe. His lovers ranged from both sexes, though he never had defined himself as bisexual (James Dean). This daringness to oppose society was one of the Dean’s most famous qualities.
James Dean was able to represent a society challenging and influential individual on and off the screen. Yes his talent itself left many in awe, but it was more of the impact he was able to have on people 's perspectives. James 's characters were easy to relate to since they all represented him quite accurately. All three of his films were a major success. These films are east of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. Even with his short life, he was nominated many times and won two awards. His nominations included two Golden Globe awards (which he won), two BAFTA awards, and two Academy Awards. His nominations were mostly for best actor (Awards). This was most likely because his passion for his art really showed in his films. James really was a well trained and strict actor even though his persona gave off a more casual and relaxed vibe. James wrote in a letter to his family:
