The game was first created by James Naismith of December in 1891 a man who wanted to follow his dreams of Physical Education.The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) gyms need a game to be played to condition young athletes because they couldn’t play any of the sports you would play outside like baseball and football during the harsh winters in Minnesota.

James Owens was born on September 12, 1913. He lived in Alabama until he was nine years old, then his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. In Ohio, James’ new teacher could not understand him because of his southern accent. When he told her his name, she thought he had said Jesse, so from then on people called him Jesse. (footnote) As a kid, Jesse loved to run. He started track in middle school where he continued the sport throughout high school and in college. He attended the prestigious Ohio State University, where he found success on the track team.

December 21, 1891- The birth of basketball. It has been changed from simply shooting a soccer ball into a peach basket to dunking a seven pound, leather ball into an iron rim. In the early years of the game, basketball was not as popular as other sports. In the 1985 NBA draft all this would change with the emergence of a 6'6" basketball phenomenon from Wilmington, North Carolina. Solomon Northup was born in July of 1808, in Minerva, New York. Solomon was born free due to the death of his father’s, Mintus, owner. His father’s owner was named Captain Henry Northup, which is how Solomon and his father received their last name. While Northup was a child, he had acquired some education, but mainly worked on his family’s farm. In 1828, Solomon married Anne Hampton. In 1834, he and his wife moved to Saratoga Springs, New York. They later had three children, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Alonzo. While in upstate New York, Solomon Northup received the reputation of a talented fiddler.

Over the years, YMCAs have led the way for a host of activities that help define America as we know it. James Naismith, a physical education teacher at the YMCA Training School (Springfield College), invented basketball in 1891 and W. G. Morgan invented volleyball at the Holyoke YMCA in 1895. Lifeguards at every beach and pool in America can trace their roots to the YMCA. The organization has also set standards in community recreation, non-profit capital fundraising and community disaster relief, among many other services.

The inventor who made basketball was James Naismith. James was born in 1861. James attended school at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal (A&E TV, 2014).. He became a physical education teacher at McGill University and at Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. James Naismith lived in Almont, Ontario. Basketball was made in 1891(Kagan, 2004). The basketball game was patent in 1929 by Dr. Heather Guthrie, head of physical education at the school for Christian workers (A&E TV, 2014). The actual basketball itself was patent by G.L. Pierce on June 25, 1929 (Kagan, 2004).

During the winter of 1892 in a town in Massachusetts a physical education teacher, Dr. James Naismith, at a YMCA school created a game where young men could play indoors aside from going outside in the freezing cold. James Hutton was born on June 3, 1726 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. He had a son named James Smeaton Hutton. His father was named William Hutton was a merchant and the city's treasurer. When Hutton was only three his father passed away. Only leaving his mother, Sarah Balfour, who was a housewife. Huttons mother showed most interest in the education of James and his three other sisters. He also had an older brother but had died at a very young age.

He got to thinking and started combining ideas from other games to make the game of what it is known today as basketball. Naismith invented this game in 1891 (Faurschou).

The first subject I will talk about is the history of Basketball. Basketball was created by a man named James Naismith in 1891. He was told to come up with a game to entertain the boys being coached by him, the requirements were that it could be played indoors though due to the fact that is was winter and freezing cold outside. The game was called or so they called it, “duck on the rock”, the idea of the game was to throw a small rock at a larger one in hopes of knocking it off a boulder. He also thought of a time where he saw rugby players, instead of throwing a ball into a net they would throw it into a trash can. He looked for a box but instead he found a peach basket so he put it up on a wall and grabbed a soccer ball. (It’s cool to think of the fact that maybe if he used a box, today we would be using one too which would make the game tremendously harder) the main point of the game was to throw the ball into the basket.
