Great Post Jordan!
I really enjoyed reading your introduction on Japan and the many reasons you have chosen to Japan as you country to conduct your research on. Japan has been an ally of the United States for several decades now. Japan also, holds absolute advantage in internet research imported from the United States. The major elements and dimensions of culture in this region from your post is fairly on point. According to Satterlee (2014) the dimensions of culture are categorized as communication, religion, ethics, values, and attitudes, manners, customs, social structure, and organizations and education (p.43). Addressing Japan’s agricultural and fishery exports fared well with question one. Also, how are these elements and dimensions integrated by locals conducting business in the nation? According to Satterlee (2014) the concept of time and dealing with change sue to cultural attitudes differing in the approach to change (p.55). Is a great source to start your inquiry on the integration of locals conducting business. The third question we were assigned mentioned how do both of the above items compare with U.S. culture and business? Your answer was very good, mentioning Japan’s economy has a 1% growth increase in the past three months is interesting to say the least. A great reference here business implications and Here are key questions Japanese corporations need to address to gain and sustain the competitive

From the first question was an indication that you would be discussing the development of Japan’s economy post WWII. In global business, it is important to understand a countries history, especially a country with two thousands of years of recorded history. According to Jung & Tseng, (2013) the industrial hardware facilities and equipment left behind by the Japanese withdrawal from Taiwan after the World War II (WWII) provided Taiwan with a basis for industrial
The Korean culture is primarily based on a shared heritage that has existed since the 2333 AD in the Korean Peninsula. The culture is therefore shaped by the traditional and the ancients events in history that contributed to the development of the Republic of Korea (Moran 5-10). The entire history and culture of Korea are based on Confucianism, which is based on the reflection of the inner peace and the principle of respect determined by age and title of an individual (Kim 365-372). On the other hand, the American culture is driven by the development of popular culture which has been in the process of development of America since it gained her independence in 1776. Therefore, the Korean culture is conservative and based on the preservation
Lizeth Galindo May 27, 2015 APWH/Period 2 Japan vs. United States How was the relationship of Japan and United States after Pearl Harbor? The whole world was thrown into wars in the late 1930’s. Countries fought one another with devastating consequences. Thousands of lives were ended in a matter of seconds and numerous generations were scarred for an eternity.
From the fighting styles of the Japanese and the way American culture differed from the Japanese culture, readers can infer that the two battling countries had many different beliefs and values. These beliefs and values were put on display even before the warriors were flying to Pearl Harbor and ruthlessly fighting battles on the islands in the Pacific. The Japanese were taught as young kids about the weak and inferior westerns, and the militarism of Imperial Japan was introduced into schools with the political views and military lessons implemented into schools teachings for kids and teens. After being taught of these weak westerners who were inferior to them, the males at the age of 17 were drafted to go fight the Americans or Chinese, or some even in Europe. John Bradley shows readers the brutality of the
In sociology, when we discuss culture (which is the totality of learned socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects, and behavior (Schaefer 2010:50)), we discuss how culture includes such things as; language, beliefs, values and norms. When sociologists studied culture they mainly looked upon the norms of society. Norms are "the agreed-upon expectations and rules by which a culture guides the members in any given situation"(Cultural Norms). There are four types of norms; folkways, mores, taboo, and laws. Although it is important to know that norms vary across the world and two examples of how norms differ around the world would be in America and Japan.
As stated before, the American occupation of Japan from the end of World War II till late April of 1952 was a major factor behind Japan’s economic success from 1950 to 1990. Following the end of
Japan is a place where many of the objects we use come from. For example, DVD’s, digital cameras, and even the favorite food of an American college student, Ramen, are all Japanese inventions. Japan has had more of an effect on America than first thought. However, there is a part of Japan that many wouldn’t expect to influence America. Japanese Animation influences American Culture majorly.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive” (Mahatma). Our culture identifies who we are and how we behave in social environments and provides us with a foundation in which to live our lives and raise our families. Each individual culture has certain customs and courtesies that are important. Exposure to the cultures of others can be intimidating and can leave a person feeling confused and unsure about how they fit in (Schaefer 60). Culture shock can leave a person feeling out of place in an unfamiliar culture (Schaefer 60). Our diverse societies demand understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Learning and understanding these cultures before being
There are significant cultural differences between Japan and the United Kingdom that need to be taken into account when doing international business. There are also a number of methods and systems by which these differences have been described. These include the Geert Hofstede cultural dimensions, Trompenaars seven dimensions of culture and the Globe Project's cultural dimensions. This paper will discuss these differences and similarities, and shed light as to the best approach to international business in these countries.
In 1945, Japan was devastated and lost a quarter of the national wealth after suffering a defect in the second world war. A majority of the commercial buildings and accommodation had been demolished, and massive machinery and equipment formerly used in production for the civil market were out of service to provide metal for military supplies (Miyazaki 1967). Despite the trash and ruins had left over in Japan, Japan was able to rebuilding its infrastructure and reconstruct their economy. It is revealed that the Japanese economy was on its way to recovery, which received a rapid development since the war, and the reconstruction of Japan had spent less than forty years to become the world’s second largest economy in the 1980s. This essay will explore the three factors account for the economic growth of post-war Japan: the financial assistance from the United States, the external environment, and the effective policy of Japanese government.
Throughout American history there has always been problems with civil rights because the white male has always been viewed as being superior. Once Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese during World War 2 the United States was uneasy whether the loyalty of the Japanese living in the states would remain with the United States, or with Japan. Both Japanese natives and Japanese-Americans were placed in concentration camps during this time period. About a decade and a half later, African Americans also made their largest and most influential movement for racial equality. Famous leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., fought prejudice for us all. Lastly, the 1960s also became a time period where women no longer wanted to viewed as being unequal to men. The common visual of a woman was pregnant and in the kitchen; they wanted to get rid of this image because it was a set boundary for their life. Not only did these people change history, but they created a legacy that would make the United States a place of opportunity for anyone.
The economic development after WWII had a common purpose shared by business, household and the government sectors, it was to catch up with North American and European industrial economies. After the war was over, many of the wartime companies and much of the technology used during the war were converted to peaceful economic development. Japanese private companies expanded
Freedom versus order is the defining difference between the cultures of Japan and America. America focuses on the ideals of freedom and equality, while Japan centers its culture on duty and order. This can clearly be seen when comparing the average daily life of an American and Japanese man or woman. In Japan, an employee must adhere to the same standards at work and outside of work.
Because they have a very different way of raising their children, as the article says most children feel a lack of support from their parents, and that’s when most of them may have a need to attend counseling but are afraid too. Asian’s would be an extremely difficult population for me to work with. They rarely agree that they need help, and I have a feeling that if I try to listen and understand them, they would think they don’t need to be here. And that is just my experience from those that I have met through out my life. Of course, not all have been like that, but it also depends if they were raised more with an American culture than a Asian culture.
All cultures have some form of stereotypes, low or high perspective of the world, and the way the people like to entertain with each other in a new community. As muslim is the dominant religion in Egypt, the culture follows the typical guidelines associated with the philosophy with the practice. Moreover, communicating in a multicultural environment is the combination of understand the norm and a fine line between being respectful and not o offend anyone. For instance, a business meeting is schedule well ahead of time and during the meeting it is customary to interrupt for any situation that may arise. On the other hand, American may view those interruption as a distraction. Also, introduction is handle with a lengthy and limp right hand handshake,
The culture of a place is an integral part of its society whether that place is a remote Indian village in Brazil or a highly industrialized city in Western Europe. The culture of Japan fascinates people in the United States because, at first glance, it seems so different. Everything that characterizes the United States--newness, racial heterogeneity, vast territory, informality, and an ethic of individualism-- is absent in Japan. There, one finds an ancient and homogeneous society, an ethic that emphasizes the importance of groups, and a tradition of formal behavior governing every aspect of daily living, from drinking tea to saying hello. On the surface at least, U.S. and Japanese
