Organized crime is an international issue and it exists in several different countries, such as; Italy, China, Japan, Russia and the United States of America. Although all these groups of organized crime have many things in common they tend to have different ways of doing something, or they may not do them at all. Many also commit similar types of crimes, and others commit crimes other groups would not. It is thought that the Russian Mafia has existed in Russia for several centuries. When Russia was still the Soviet Union, corruption began to develop because of the Communist era. Citizens were so desperate to pay bills, buy groceries, and more; that they began to steal from one another, as well as get into forms of organized crime. …show more content…
The Triads are a family run organized crime gang in China. Triads are sometimes referred to as the 'Chinese Mafia'. In 1821 the first systematic account of the Triads was written down by a principle of an Anglo-Chinese college. Triads engage in highly ritualized dress and behavior- from secret hand signs, passwords, to blood oaths in elaborate initiation ceremonies. This group has made their money through drug trafficking, loan sharking, prostitution, smuggling, gunrunning, extortion, and protection rackets. In the most recent years they have been moving more into credit card fraud, call-girl rings, CD pirating, minibus concessions, and computer software (Hays, 2010). The Triads have a signature instrument of torture, punishment and execution, the kitchen meat cleaver. Triad victims' bodies are often found horribly mutilated, severed limbs can be used as a warning. In 1984 the leaders of the Triads met with Communist officials before singing the handover agreement. The communists in return for the Triads assistance in the smooth transition agreed to turn a 'blind eye' to their illegal activities. Organized Crime is an underground operation that profits from the sale of illegal products or services based on the public's demand. Organized crime came about as a way for incoming immigrants to the United States to make a profit throughout the 19th century. When they were discriminated against and turned away from employment because of their ethnicity, they banded together to make a profit so that they could one day live the “American Dream.” However, organized crime really takes over and starts to become a problem in the 1920s with the introduction of the 18th Amendment on January 16, 1920 which outlawed the production, distribution, and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
Organized crime; is a group of individuals that work together to illicit profit through illegal and sometimes often violent methods1 and two of the most famous groups are the Mafia and the Irish Mob. The two groups can be traced as far back as the 1800’s and had originally formed together for their financial gain to improve their lives and to protect themselves against the corrupt police officers. However over the years they have developed this infamous reputation tying both groups together, when there are substantial differences between the two. For instance one is based in the country of Sicily and the other was formed right here in the United States. Both groups have different origins, histories, systems and traditions thus making both
The Mafia was first developed in Sicily in feudal times to protect the estates of landlords who were out of town. The word Mafia, derived from the Sicilian word, Mafioso, means family. Today, Mafia is a name which describes a loose association of criminal groups. These groups can be bound together by blood, oath or sworn secrecy. Many people had considered the Sicilian Mafia as the most ruthless mobsters of the twentieth century.
The real ceremony involves significant ritual, oaths, blood, and an agreement is made to follow the rules of the Mafia as presented to the inductee.
Organized crime today differs a lot from the past. For example, during the 1920’s organized crime was primarily a domestic concern and today it is a transnational concern. Before, organized crime was all about having power and looking up for their location and rarely never go beyond there. Today they are just everywhere, per say one group can be in multiple locations at the same time. Today is all about money and controlling licit and illicit enterprises. This new form of organized crime started during the 1970’s and forward, this changed was due to the new era of globalized world, soft borders, and the revolution of technology. All of this opened the doors to a creative and powerful transnational organized crime. How this all started anyways?
The history of Chinese gangs goes back to a mystical religious group formed over three hundred years ago in China. The group, "the Triad Society was made up of Buddhist and Taoist priests opposed the Manchu emperor K'ang His, who reigned from 1662 to 1723"

The Mafia way of life may seem like a romantic updated version of the western movie played out on the streets of the big cities where the good guys and the wise guys who share the same instincts and values do battle before an enthralled public but it is actually very different. The Mafia is really just a group of uneducated thugs making money by victimizing the public. Initially, the Mafia was setup as a prominent supplier of bootlegged liquor, but it has spread into many different areas of crime. During this research paper I will discuss three aspects of the Mafia which are crime, structure and decline in leadership.

When people think of organized crime they think of the Italian mob and the Russian mafia. They are the ones that they see in movies and on television, and the ones that they hear about the most. However, they were created a couple centuries after their Asian counterparts, the Yakuza in Japan, and the Triads in China. These Asian syndicates were founded in the sixteenth and seventeenth century and consisted of merchants and other people in what was basically the middle class. They were just groups of poorer people who were just looking for protection or were trying to help other people. The first organized crime syndicates were a kind of Robin Hood, they helped the poor. They weren’t big or powerful, and they didn’t have large numbers. The
The Russian Mafia: Protectionism in the New Capitalist Russia The Russian Mafia has always exercised an important role in the Russian economy. The contemporary mafiosi are descendents of the seventeenth Century highwaymen and Cossack robbers. These men occasionally murdered families prior to raids preventing them from being captured.
