Jeffrey indicates how women who are not ready to have a baby, their first instinct is to have an abortion. Many of these women don’t think of the consequences that can happen to them in the long run. One of the risks they end up getting is breast cancer. Most abortions in today’s society are from teenagers but these girls don’t know once they get older there is a 50% chance they will get cancer at age 45. Sometimes women after having an abortion aren’t able to have kids anymore since they have to scar in the urine. They should really think twice before committing or agreeing to something. This related to my thesis because even if you think everything went okay in an abortion there are future consequences.
“When you deny me a means to end my unwanted pregnancy, you deny me the opportunity to participate in society in the way that my brother or husband can. Better nurseries, better financial support can mitigate some of the consequences of motherhood—but nothing can mitigate the impact of pregnancy itself, which is why women need the means to end it” mentions
In addition to that, abortions can tarnish the relationships within a family. The mother who had the abortion may experience worsening relationships with her parents, her children (if any), and most often her spouse. If the woman’s relationship with her spouse does come to an end, the problems for pre-existing children may arise even more. For example, 71% of teenage pregnancies occur with children of single parents and 63% of youth suicides occur in children without a father (Impact). This shows just how drastically an abortion can harm a family and ruin the up and coming generations. Also, the normalization of abortion is very detrimental to the success of the millennials. As kids are growing up during this generation, society is constantly portraying abortion as an expected pathway to take for an unwanted child. This idea teaches our youth lessons opposite of what they’re normally told. For instance, it teaches them that they can bypass the consequences of a situation instead of accepting them and dealing with it. Also, it influences children to go against the much encouraged sexual abstinence. The legalization of abortion encourages sexual activity among teens because they now feel safe knowing that if all goes wrong they can resort to an abortion. In accordance with the increase in sexual activity among the youth is the growth in the amount of teens with sexually transmitted diseases (The
In this paper I will discus and examine Judith Jarvis Thomson’s view upon abortion as stated in her argument “A Defense of Abortion”. I will explain her view on the issue and look deeper into her supporting arguments she included in her essay. I will also explain whether I agree with her statements. I would also discuss whether the person can agree with my statements and reason why having an abortion make you in moral.
Morality and Duties: There are many reasons women choose to seek an abortion but “one of the most common reasons is that they do not have room in their life just then to be a mother, [and] they know if they continue the pregnancy they will not be able to give it up” (p. 312). Little strongly believes that this is a “perfectly sensible, and often wise,” decision (p. 312). Before morally judging a woman based on her decision, one must learn to “appreciate the different moral contours involved with entering, existing in and exiting a relationship” (p. 312). A woman’s morals cannot be judged given she “may have good reason to decline,” gestation — for example a woman can argue that her reason is “more [of] a refusal to create than a decision to destroy” (p. 30). It must be recognized that “ [being] asked
In the paper titled “A Defense of Abortion” Judith Thomson uses several premises to bring the readers to the conclusion that Abortion is not morally wrong. After reading her paper I have concluded, that abortion is in fact morally wrong, excluding extenuating circumstances. In this paper I will show that abortion is morally wrong by way of the following argument:
There is a concern among many, that it is not the woman’s decision to terminate the life of their unborn child. Fetuses are advocated for because decision making is out of their control. One of the main arguments is that the unborn child will not have the opportunity to live the life it deserves and because of that, women that go through the process of abortion will regret their decision. This is understandable, because it is a difficult option to pursue, not health-wise, but emotionally a devastation for some. Along
“The U.S. has the highest abortion rate of any western industrialized nation.” (Incidence of Abortion section). Abortion has long been a controversial issue over the years. Throughout the nation lies many known and unknown statistics involving abortion. Many of those who choose abortion do so based upon many similar reasons. There also happen to be many individuals who view abortion in the same manner. The individuals and majority feel abortion to be wrong for a handful of reasons. Each year women decide for a number of reasons to end their pregnancy in the result of an abortion, and although the decision is still commonly viewed as wrong, is there any justification to how it could be accepted?
The next minor claim Willis presents is that the life of an unborn child is less valuable than that of a woman who already has a history and has experienced life. According to Willis, a woman has more worth because she has “feelings, self-consciousness, a history, social ties” (2005, p. 515). By having to carry a baby, all of these important parts of her life are in jeopardy of being harmed (Willis, 2005). The concern Willis expresses for a woman’s life changing
When having an abortion, you don’t think about what the outcome is going to be. You just think about what’s going on in that moment. People have abortions just to make people mad and not knowing that it will also affect the them in the long run. Women don’t know that the abortions will kill them or harm their body if they have to many. After, so many abortions when you do decide to have a child you are putting you and your new fetus at risk because you have damaged your insides. When it is time for you to carry your body to full term there is a possibility that your body won’t let you, because you have damaged the uterus lining too bad.
Thirdly, “Rape is a big excuse for people who are for abortion.” Women who become pregnant through rape and even incest rape suffer the most severe form of emotional tragedy. Should they still go through with having that child even though they may be at a time in their life where a child may completely destroy their life and also the fact that, that child will be the embodiment of that one moment in their life that they try to forget? One of the underlying themes in Jimmyissmart’s paper is humanity. However, how ironic is
One reason why abortion should not be legal is because it allows selfish and irresponsible people to take the easy way out of the situation. This causes people to avoid the responsibility sexual intercourse exacts because, after all, sex is in fact for reproduction. This type tactic to evade responsibility is portrayed best in the documentary “Abortion Diaries” by Penny Lane. This documentary is surprisingly facetious and acts as if the people interviewed did no wrong to get into the situation in the first place. In this documentary, Penny Lane interviewed several women who had gotten an abortion due to an unwanted pregnancy, and most of their stories, unfortunately, revealed their immaturity. Many of them were having plenty of safe sex, or surprisingly, plenty of unsafe sex, when they were financially unstable. One woman, named Bridget, even graphically says “he asked me if I was on the pill. I said ‘no.’ We had
Studies by pro-choice researchers also conclude that women often have difficulty coping in life after an abortion. One study found that “17% of women felt guilt after the procedure… 56% of women experienced a sense of guilt about having had an abortion and 26% said they mostly regret the abortion.” (Dube 24). Sometimes, women have abortions and then carry such guilt with them that when they do want to become pregnant, they are not capable to because of the psychological stress associated with guilt. “In cases of selective abortion, there is grief for a wanted child, questions about the characteristics of the baby – not usually seen by the parents – worries about future pregnancies, ambivalence about abortion itself, and guilt – terrible guilt” is what Susan Borg and Judith Lasker had written in When Pregnancy Fails (Borg 50).
Many women that choose to have an abortion do not realize that it is a dangerous surgery with serious side effects. These side effects are both physical and psychological. Having an abortion is unnatural and interrupts this function of the human body. “The women’s body naturally resists the abortion, causing physical and emotional problems” (“Who does Abortion Affect?”). Almost all of the women who had abortions feel that they have made the wrong decision. The women are not informed about the side effects of abortion. Many women that had abortions said their doctors gave “little or no information about the potential health risks
Rape is one of the most prominent possibilities as to why a woman would choose to terminate her pregnancy. Though it is a tough decision to make, it is possible to be faced with keeping the child or ending the life of the fetus. In some cases, women make the choice to end their pregnancy knowing how they might treat their child. The women is most likely to hate her rapist and may worry if they move forward with the pregnancy, they would project this hate onto the child because it reminds them of such a painful memory.According to Rachel Perry, “One percent of women in a cross-sectional study of women's reasons for choosing abortion reported that their pregnancy had resulted from rape” (67-73). In addition to the pregnancy, the health consequences of rape can include physical injury, sexually transmitted disease, and mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.
Being a mother is one of the best gifts from a life. A mother gives her children unconditional love without expecting anything in return. Being a mother means more than having given birth to a child. It is an invisible connection between mother and child; it is a blessing, a relationship that never ends and the love that never dies. However, for some women, motherhood might be challenging in ways they did not expect, forcing them to choose between having an abortion and keeping the child. The debate over abortion is an ardent and polarizing issue as there are those who believe that all humans including those unborn should have a right to life, and on the other side of the spectrum are those who believe it should a woman's right to choose whether she wants an abortion or not. This topic relates to Gwendolyn Brooks's poem, "The Mother", where the author describes the painful thoughts, heartbreak, and awful feelings that a woman experiences after having an abortion. Brooks lays out a helpful framework for understanding the difficult situation of facing unplanned pregnancy. In "The Mother", a woman recollects her inner conflicts as she laments over the guilt of having had an abortion and the future she never gave her would be child. Brooks's poem provides insight into the research which reveals how abortion affects women morally, psychologically, and religiously.
