An enormous wave crashes into your boat nearly tipping it. The howling wind tosses the boat from side to side. Lightning strikes the stern sending you into darkness. The next morning you wake up to a calm, quiet sea ready for smooth sailing. Somedays the water is perfectly still making for easy travel, yet other days you have to endure a restless, unforgiving sea. This is how the road of life is perceived. The seas my father has conquered has taught me that life isn’t always smooth sailing. Forty years ago the Swanson family brought home their fourth and final member, Jeremy Swanson. You would never have expected this young boy to sail the most ferocious seas, but in the end it was never his choice. Jeremy never had a concrete childhood with his parents constantly moving their family from town to town, and the ever growing cloud of financial problems. To help pay the bills he became a paper boy along with his brother Kevin. Life inside of the Swanson household was never easy. With a strict father and unhealthy mother the only fun the boys every really had was wrestling with each other, which caused much mischief in their …show more content…
It came to him as naturally as a sailor sailing the seas. Although high school sports were his getaway Jeremy’s teenage years were vicious like the waves during a hurricane. His father left them, which gave Jeremy and Kevin no choice but to work. A couple years later, matters deteriorated when Pam Swanson was put out of work because of her aching knees. By this time Kevin had joined the Navy leaving Jeremy to pay the bills for their family. Their financial struggles intensified to the point where Jeremy had to dropout of high school in his Junior year to work fulltime. A few months later Jeremy went back to get his ¨Good-enough degree¨, but his boat was hit with yet another wave when he broke his ankle taking down his plan of going into the military with

In 1781 Nathan Brownson was the governor of Georgia. Brownson graduated from Yale College in 1761 and went on to study medicine. He was the first physician to be a governor in Georgia. During his time as governor the British were just leaving Augusta. While the British were in control of Georgia, its residence divided between loyalist and patriots. Once the British left, Brownson had to bring those two groups back together. Brownson also found a way to gain back the population of people that had fled during the war.

After graduating high school, Jesse and his family moved to San Diego, California as part of his father’s job relocation requirements. “My father was in a leadership role as far back as I can remember, and I learned a lot from him. He always encouraged me to seek out new challenges, such as Eagle Scouts, and eventually my enlistment in the Navy” (Kenner). For the next two years, Jesse attended the public community college and held lower level positions working in retail electronic centers. At the age of twenty, Jesse knew it was time to establish a career, and was interested in serving his country. After a brief interview with a Navy Recruiter, Jesse signed up to join the military. Wilkerson was not executed until May 1879, in spite shooting being upheld by the court as a method of execution. Some public dissent against the mode was noticed, as evidenced by one of the daily newspapers:
It is often said that both personal strengths and weaknesses can be tested in both positive and negative ways during a journey at sea, such as the way you think, feel, and how the actions reflect how you move forward. The weaknesses that a journey puts forth alters, what you think about first versus what's least to most important to you. However, during a journey at sea, the strengths and weaknesses that are magnified are one's perception of life and how a person conceives things. First, let's look at some of the positives of a journey at sea. According to usatoday.com, research shows, “proven scientific evidence that being close to bodies of water promotes mental health and happiness.”
Bill Coon is a two time heart transplant recipient, one time kidney recipient, and organ donation advocate. When asked why he became an advocate of organ donation, he simply replied, “Without organ donation, I wouldn’t be standing here today. I have been saved by the miracle of organ donation twice in my lifetime.” When waiting in the hospital for his new organs, he comments on how incredibly important the machine he’s hooked to is, slipping away from the machine would simply end his life. After his realization and how important organ donation is, he vowed to write about his experiences in his journal until the day he received his new heart and kidney, as he wanted others to realize what it felt like to be living off of a machine. Nature is an all powerful force that does not care whether a man lives, or dies. This could not be more true in “The Open Boat” as we see the plight of a crew of sailors as they struggle to survive after their boat has sunken. Throughout the story we watch as nature slowly weathers the men. The setting of the story heavily impacts its theme as it describes nature and its power.
“I love you.” This is something you do not want to tell your crush when you have not talked to her. During 8th grade, Brian Wilkerson met a girl in one of his classes. Throughout the year they became very good friends. Eventually he started to get feelings towards her but it was toward the end of the year. They both went to highschool but did not have any classes freshman year so they stopped talking. Not until sophomore year did Brian think it was time to tell her how he felt. And so, after not talking to her for almost to years, he went up to her while she waited for her bus and said: “I love you.” After this she went on her bus without saying a word to him back. Ever since this has been the most awkward moment of his life.
It’s easy to tell that the ocean is a mysterious and isolating place from all of the tragic tales we hear from sailors both real and fictional. Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and an anonymous author’s “The Seafarer” are quite similar in that they both revolve around said tragic tales told by sailors. However, there seem to be more commonalities between their themes, tones, and messages rather than their seaward-bound settings. But before we can discuss these similar settings and deeper themes, we have to tackle their origins.
The son had loved his father dearly but does not favor his way of life. His interest in school greatly outweighed his interest or desire to work on ‘The Boat’. He still had a love for the sea and in some way felt like he should carry out his family’s tradition. After his uncle had accepted a new job he took his position on the boat and promised his father that we would continue to sail with him for as long as he lived, and when his father passed despite the desires of his mother he followed his dreams and pursued education and all of its wonders. After living his life he finds himself longing for the sea again and isn’t so satisfied with his life.
