“People have an infinite attention span if you are entertaining them” Jerry Seinfeld Jerry Seinfeld is an entertaining comedian who is very successful because he understands one thing: entertainment and humor go hand in hand. Humor is a good way to connect with an audience and keep them engaged. The Tv series Sherlock is easier for an audience to follow and understand than the original short stories by Conan Doyle because it is far more humorous. Humor is one of the best way to lighten the surrounding heavier subject matter. When used properly it can put the audience at ease and relax them. This can be seen all throughout the tv series; from first to last episode the humor never wavers. “Anderson, don’t talk out loud. You’ll lower the
Us and Them by David Sedaris shows a powerful and thoughtful story that brings out humor. It makes us not only examine the history but themselves in there lives. The author points out the importance in family and how technology takes over family bounding time. The tomkey are described as a family who didn't watch television which seemed bizarre to him. Its also Ironic since the Tomkeys didn't believe in television but there lives seem to be a show to the author. The author has grow up with television so thats why he was amazed that the Tomkeys family would sit for dinner and have long conversations. It was a uncommon bonding for the author. Due to the lack of communication that is caused by his mother and son they cant create friendship with
It can be used as a way to communicate to audiences about serious issues in a more approachable way. Humor and irony can be used as pathways to express serious, important issues in way so people can acknowledge and pay attention to them. For example people often lose interest when watching the news but Jon Stewart changed that after he took over “The Daily Show”.Source A notes “...the comedian Jon Stewart took over “The Daily Show,” he did something radical: he took the two formats and reformatted them, creating a series that was not merely useful and funny but emotionally powerful.” With Stewart being a comedian he used his humor and irony to make the news more interesting. Putting a humorous spin on certain topics can make them more open and easy to talk about. Stewart covered segments including touchy serious topics ,“But Stewart’s series also provided a psychic salve, especially during the worst parts of the past few elections and the run-up to the Iraq
Laughter is the best medicine for anything and everything. Little do we know there is a lot of thought behind all of these jokes that make you laugh. Comedians uses various different techniques to make the world guffaw or even just chuckle. Author and Comedian Dave Barry wrote a low comedic wrote a novel titled Live Right and Find Happiness. In an excerpt from Barry’s novel he humorously tells his grandson how to be a good and nice person using verbal Irony and Hyperbole.
Soon Seinfeld's easy-to-relate to humor gave way to regular appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "Late Night with David Letterman." Other more gimmicky comedians failed the test of time, but Seinfeld's steadfast style made his popularity bloom. Despite national exposure, Seinfeld still stayed close to his roots, continuing to play at small venues as well as on television. With jokes like: "They say Tide cleans bloodstains. I say if you've got a T-shirt with bloodstains, then maybe laundry isn't your biggest problem" ("Jerry Seinfeld" 3/7) it's not hard to see why Seinfeld caught on.
Throughout time, humorists have been able to pull off a phenomenon, which allows for others to laugh about sensitive, stressful topics. With talent, humorists are able to captivate positive emotion from their audience and allow for society to see delicate issues in an unbiased view. Although humorists are commonly seen as people who only intend to entertain, humorists purposefully say things through their work that allow for hard issues to be spoken or illustrated.
The Secret of Seinfeld’s Humor: The significance of the Insignificant, an article written by Jorge Gracia briefly outlines what the author believes to be the origin of the humour with which the popular television show Seinfeld achieved such broad based success. A show that embraced the ordinary of everyday life, while atypically avoiding the mainstay of violence and sex of most of today’s popular visual media and culture. Gracia (19??) begins his article by posing the question “how, can a show that deals with ordinary, everyday occurrences have such wide appeal”? This is a very general question that could be analysed in any number of ways. The author however,
His unique style was a clean and catchy form of observational humor. Most of his humor eschewed any charged political commentary or swear words, which broadened his audience. Seinfeld’s jokes often were prefaced with the phrase “what’s the deal with ___?” or “Have you ever ...?” These phrases defined the Seinfeld brand of comedy, and were also were easy for audience members to imitate on their own. By the end of the 80s, Seinfeld’s had grown, and he wanted to move his act onto television. Little did he know that this new business venture would change observational comedy
The characters usually have a lot more to say and humour comes just from the dialogue instead of actions. However, in Friends, a couple of the characters are actually portrayed as being very childlike and the humour is much more slapstick and easy to understand because of this. Also the lines given to the characters are much shorter which means each character has something to say in one scene and some of the humour heavily relies on the actions of the characters as well. These short lines make it easier for the viewer to settle into the programme from the beginning. There
The comedy combines physical comedy with gags and great one-liners, puns, word play, and more.
One element that makes The Office an excellent television show is the use of humor. The show’s humor may be described as dry and sarcastic. The characters are not attempting to be funny, nevertheless, they are extremely immature; therefore, the language the workers use may seem hilarious. About three-fourths of the employees in the company can be described as strange and unusual,
The feature of humor makes the topic more interesting and intriguing; in some cases, humor adds a spark to the issue creating the feeling that the issue can be looked upon with less negativity. There is a thin line between using humor and being disrespectful about a topic; a key aspect when using humor is to assure that you do not exceed or go too far with the humor. Exaggerating the humor may also distract the reader/listener from the actual topic. For instance, in Dave Barry’s “A Year Ruined by Sleaze”, the musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was constantly mentioned in each month. However, with all the extra commenting, I did not realize the real issues behind the production. Therefore, I appeal to a casual type of humor in a story; J. Patrick Coolican is a great example. His columns in the Las Vegas Sun are funny and entertaining; at the same time, he delivers the news efficiently, which I think is a quality Dave Barry slightly lacks. Regardless, humor is a key feature when discussing important issues, as long as the humor does not go
Humorists are an important part of our society, not only does one get entertainment from it, but like De Bottom states, also draw attention to topics that are usually ignored and create a more understanding towards them. No more dry and factual information given out. The ability for humorists to draw attention to topics without getting in trouble for them helps them overcome their limits and break a barrier that society has built. Stand up comedies are huge example of how humorist is an important part of society. Comedian gives audience something to laugh about while educating and making one think about real issues in society like racism, religion, drugs, etc. They make you see the
Manbearpig: Half Man, Half Bear, Half Pig, but All Global Warming? South Park is a popular animated comedy series written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. While the episodes of South Park are always humorous on the surface, each show usually has a deeper, much more profound meaning and moral. One episode of South Park entitled Manbearpig, named after the monster in the episode, has a particularly potent deeper meaning. On the surface, the episode pokes fun at monster stories, politics, and specifically Al Gore. Deeper down, however, this monster story can be read as a national allegory alluding to the dangers of global warming, the problems with the politics behind global warming, and the eventual doom we will all face
Humor, for many, is a cheap laugh and a way to brighten someone's day. But for others, humor goes beyond that. Often times in today's world, humor is used to convey messages about dangerous or impossible to state topics. Society allows humorists to speak about unpalatable topics since the delivery of the message is masked. Humorists take difficult messages and use creative humor to make them more accepted into society.
