Jerry’s relationship with his mother is complicated. She does her best to raise him how she wants, but then finds herself worrying over what amusements he might secretly be longing for (Lines 10-12). His mother was the one to open up the door to Jerry’s tunnel encounter. She asked him if he was tired of the usual beach, and gave him permission to go somewhere else (Lines 16-18).
Throughout the story Jerry never told his mother what he had been doing. He wanted to tell her how good of a job he had been doing, but never did. Jerry wanted to be with her, and did not like sneaking around but he wanted to dive. All the while when he was diving he was thinking of his mother.
He would dive down and look, and he would think to himself how much he
Jerry was afraid to go through the tunnel, afraid to leave his childhood, because he did not know what would happen if he did. As scared as Jerry is, he knows that he has to go through this process now, he believes that he has matured enough and is prepared for the obstacles ahead. “...this was the moment when he would try. If he didn’t do it now, he never would” (Lessing 363). At last, Jerry puts his childhood behind him and he becomes independent. He changed his mind because he believed that he was both mentally and physically strong enough to overcome life’s obstacles in his adolescent years. Jerry’s feeling represent his maturity level and whether he is ready for such a change or not. The imagery used helped depict the idea of hardships when growing up and the obstacles that are not easy to overcome, but very possible.

4. Jerry tells the narrator that his mother looked a bit like the narrator, lives in Mannville, did not have a job at this time, bought him roller skates and a suit, had hands of a size eight and a half, and likes the color white.
Jerry’s job is a helicopter pilot that looks for news and stories for the television. While Jerry has been looking for stories for his news feed, he has saved many lives along the way. When someone saves a person, they are bringing others closer together. By saving lives, Jerry has brought others together in seeing how easy it is to get lost or lose your life in dangerous landforms or adverse conditions.
These weren’t the only obstacles he faced. As a very young kid, Jackie’s father disappeared. Mallie, Jackie’s mom, thinks he was killed somehow. Jackie was to young to understand but things were a lot harder. Once jackie was a parent, he loved it.
Jerry is haunted by his unimportance. He is unable to regain his composure after he overplays his rebellious actions. Defying the Vigils and Trinity takes its toll. Although
Jerry keeps the troubling situation secret at home because he doesn’t want to bother his dad with it since his mom died not too long ago, as Obie pointed out in chapter 2. Jerry doesn’t talk to his dad about anything because he doesn’t want his dad to have to deal with the drama of the chocolate sales and pain of getting beat up. This is not only seen in chapter 32 on page 219 when it states “Compassion for his father welled in Jerry. Should he tell his father what it was was all about? But he didn’t want to involve him.”, but it’s also seen in chapter 34 on page 225 where it says “He didn’t want his father’s universe to be disturbed and he wanted his own to be put in order again.”
At the beginning of the story, the author introduces the mother as a nuisance and the narrator begins to lie to her, not accept her flaws with the purse, not appreciate her asking how his day is every day, not talking to her a lot and not trusting her with knowing about Heather. The next event was that the narrator tries to lie about meeting with Heather. This shows us about bad communication
The passage that was significant and that moved the plot along efficiently was paragraphs 35-39. At this point in the story, Jerry has already began his journey through the tunnel. In the story “Through the Tunnel” Lessing describes how even through the pain and struggling, perseverance is important. Like when Lessing illustrates the struggle by saying, “Seventy-one, seventy- two… there was no strain
The characterization of Jerry illustrates the stages of maturing and becoming independent. In the beginning of the story, Jerry is depicted as young and immature. The immaturity of Jerry is shown when he is trying to capture the older boys’ attention. In order to capture their attention, “he began splashing and kicking in the water like a foolish dog.” This action conveys that Jerry is still immature, and wants to join the older kids. After seeing the boys pass through the tunnel, Jerry also wants to pass through in order to be a part of their group. In order
Initially, our first thoughts of Jerry at the beginning of the story, is that he acts immature and is burdened within a circle of maternal protection. During the opening of the story, the author conveys Jerry’s relative childishness by labeling him as “the boy”. The author also uses the mother to demonstrate his youth and how he is trapped in a circle of maternal protection which leads us to think that he is lonely due to that reason. In this part, “His mother walks in front of him, carrying a bright white strap in one hand” tells us that because the mother was walking in front of him, it gives us the impression that the mother still thinks of him as a boy that needs to be protected from any potential harm. We see more of Jerry’s immaturity and how the burden of protection leads his actions as we go through the story. During the part where Jerry sees the group of boys acting free-spirited, we see that he is overcome with desire to be with them, probably because he feels that because he is always in the circle of protection making him feel lonely and isolated from everyone. At first, he is added into the group and begins to have fun jumping from the cliff into the water with the other boys. Later on however, he starts to act immature when he realizes he could not do the same thing the other boys were doing. That was, underwater for a long time and going through the dark tunnel and he becomes scared. In this passage,“... In a panic of failure, he yelled up, in English, “Look at me! Look!” and he began splashing and kicking the water like a

In the 1950’s through the 1960’s women were not respected in there everyday lives, in the job field or in general. They did not have the rights they deserved, so during this time the “women’s movement” began. Women fought for their rights and fought for the self-respect that they thought they deserved. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the character Mama, expresses her feelings of pushing or extracting a new side for a woman. Her role explains that woman can be independent and can live for themselves. Through her behavior in this play she demonstrates that women can support and guide a family. Mama is in charge of the family, which is unusual, since men are traditionally the “head of a family”. Through Mama’s wisdom
