I connected best with Kevin Eric Depew. Kevin Depew explains how he was "labeled a bad writer" for most of his life. He never let the people that put him down cause him to give up. As Kevin grew older, he gained experience in writing. No one told him he was a good or bad writer, but he was determined to become a "good writer." It was not until Kevin got into his PHD program that it became more of a no issue. He would never say that he was a good writer, but he would look back on some of his work and say, "Wow, it's actually kind of good." Kevin is an assistant professor at an university. He has more empathy for his students that struggle with writing because he knows how they feel to be a "bad writer." I found this narrative interesting because
Johnny Tremain,” by Esther Forbes is a book about a boy that lived before and during the Revolutionary War. In this book, Johnny Tremain experienced many things as a boy, apprentice, a silversmith, a messenger, and a revolutionary. While Johnny was getting older and time past by, Johnny experienced love, changing, and betrayal in many ways. Johnny changes during the story, as well as experience love and betrayal right in front of him. Although Johnny went through many hardships, he was still able to overcome the obstacles that came to him. After reading “Johnny Tremain,” Johnny never gave up, and people should never give up just because there is a barrier ahead of us. “Johnny Tremain” has many historical figures that allow the reader to know
I usually do one line of my mother's side, and once my road block was cleared of who my 3rd great grandfather's father was, that arrived in Canada via New York and Albany in August 1785, the line was very well documented in Clan and Peer books. Other lines are obscured with the lack of records when they arrived, born, married, lived and died all before regular census records. So the quilt has many holes.
How many times do we feel stressed and stretched by the insane demands of the
Would you accept a hard, tedious job working for a wealthy man, who wanted his order to be perfect? In the book Johnny Tremain, Johnny had to make this very decision. Johnny should not have agreed to make the silver basin for John Hancock for three convincing explanations: The order needed to be perfect, It was a very tough job, and Johnny might not finish it in time.
Anna Quindlen did a good job in creating an opportunity for her readers to relate to her by mentioning her childhood memory of reading Green Eggs and Ham. One example is myself, I could relate to the topic of how something could change a person’s life. Although reading wasn’t what changed my life, I found something else that I believe was just as equivalent. What changed my life was art. For as a long as I can remember I was never good with expressing my emotions to people.
Johnny Tremain is the orphaned apprentice of a silversmith in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1773, a time of tension and uncertainty. He is the nephew of a very wealthy and powerful merchant named Jonathan Lyte, but that is a secret only known to Mr. Lapham’s daughter Priscilla. Before his mother died, she entrusts him with her christening cup, which proves his relation to the Lyte family, but she warns him never to go to his uncle, unless “God Himself has forsaken you.” When Johnny breaks the Sabbath while trying to fulfill an order his old master was not able to complete, he ends up burning his hand. After the accident, he is unable to move his right hand, and, therefore, he is no longer wanted as an apprentice. Since he cannot find a job,
d to support the Lapham Johnny worked hard.As Johnny was a arrogant and overly proud person ,Mr. Lapham made sure that Johnny read bibles verses so that he can become less proud and he should not be too pride but responsible and loyal to others.This book teaches that life can be an full of ups and downs depending on the person.There are time when humiliation and shame get to Johnny when he almost loss his hands but driven to exception he was able to over come the humiliation and became brave and humble natured toward motivating himself to learn how to write and ride a horses.
To Coach Depew My coach and my friend Who taught me how to properly hawk tackle and how to love my brothers. Who shows me the utmost respect, even when I do not deserve it. Who showed me that five monster energy drinks will not kill a grown man.
The bright lights illuminated the hallways throughout; making no difference in the time of day. Continuous beeping sound echoing down the hall. It seemed surreal, obscure at first but clarified later on. While my younger sister simply made a game of it, I interpreted the situation differently. The hospital was something I knew absolutely nothing about, but I was willing to learn its nooks and crannies.
Do you really think that cell phones are distracting? Well just in observation when having a simple conversation with someone sitting next to if they get a text they automatically focus on their phone. Could the distraction have a good motive such as an important meeting, important call from school, a learning tool or even an emergency situation? Well yes that could be argued, but just in our everyday life we seem to focus more on our phones than our surroundings. According to The United Nations of Communication and Technology Task Force (2005), “Cell phones are not just communications devices sparking new modalities of interacting between people, they are also particularly useful computers that fit in your pockets, are always with you, and
Mary Dejevsky mentions examples such as a Tube strike, where Uber drivers will temporarily raise the price, and exploit the increasing demand, right after calling ‘the caring, sharing economy the same old capitalist wolf clad in a soft furry sheepskin’. Besides the prices there are also the health and safety issues, which have become a joke. Mary Dejevskys viewpoint is clear, for her it is a post-capitalist solution which can result in shutting out the poor and underprivileged: “But there will also be those – mostly elderly and poorer people – who are doubly locked out”(p. 1, l. 47-51). Businesses such as Uber, claim a certain modernity through the use of new technology however these occupations existed a long time ago. One of the opinions
I love reading books and telling stories. I choose stories and books that I can relate to. When I feel a connection with the writer, I enjoy the book more. Using my experiences as a reader, I try to find ways to connect with my audience while writing and I found that story telling is the key to that connection. Storytelling is a great element to use when writing. It is not only a way to grab the audience’s attention; it is also a way to connect with them. I’m a great storyteller, because I always add my personal experiences to my writing and it helps me connect with my
It gave me more of an understanding of what incoming college students face when writing and what to expect in this more academically challenged environment. “What Is ‘Academic’ Writing?” by L. Lennie Irvin is a short story about how first-time college students and how they think to have these kinds of expectation figured out to write an academically correct paper and the troubles they face. He also mentions the Importance of developing a writer’s sense, the myths about writing, the three most common types of college writing assignments and talks about the complex literacy tasks in assignment students struggle with. I really thought his story compare to a lot of what was happening in my life. I was struggling as a writer and I thought I knew what the expectations were going to be heading into college, but I didn’t. The number one thing I would like to focus on and compare it to my life as a writer are the myths people have about
I am looking to improve on this challenge as a writer by focusing on explaining my quotes and explanations in a more supportive way that relates back to the thesis. Writing can be improved upon endlessly by minimizing your challenges as a writer.
Novel and movies is the best methods to express the writer’s image. Reading from a variety of authors there is one author that hooked me its Nicholas Spark. Spark was born on the 31st of December 1965 in Omeha, Nebraska. He got his education in University of Notre Dame. Spark got married and got five kids two girls and three boys. Many of his novels are mostly inspirational and tragedy. The most interesting novel that interests me is A Walk to Remember. This novel inspires me in so many ways it’s a romantic story, it’s also a true love story that touched many people in different kind of generation. That was the reason why I picked the novel and also to compare it and contrast it with the movie. Also I will tell if it’s one of the three option;
