Hello everyone, In the editorial, “When troops worry about their kids’ schools our military suffers.”, author Jim Cowen in the Washington Post, was writing about how the readiness of our military suffers because our service men and women feel that their child’s education is suffering by taking jobs and assignments. These military families are moving from base to base with every new job/assignment and their children run the risk of either falling behind in these new schools or being ahead. This effects how our military is operating because, they feel like their families are not being taking care of properly. In the editorial, a recent survey conducted by his organization, The Collaborative for Student Success, along with the Military Time
The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, transports the reader into the minds of veterans of the Vietnam conflict. The Vietnam War dramatically changed Tim O’Brien and his comrades, making their return home a turbulent and difficult transition. The study, titled, The War at Home: Effects of Vietnam-Era Military Service on Post-War Household Stability, uses the draft lottery as a “natural experiment” on the general male population. The purpose of the NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research) study is to determine the psychological effects of the Vietnam War on its veterans. In order to do this, they tested four conditions, marital stability, residential stability, housing tenure, and extended family living. However, it
It targets fathers specifically, with the idea that they will make their families proud if they fight in the war. It is also saying that having a family is no excuse to not go to war, as 45,000 other fathers are fighting. Finally, it also targets many other people by showing that even people with wives and children are fighting and therefore, they should help.
Louis, Detroit, New York, and Texas. They display the wretched realization of just how different school can be for poor and minority children as opposed to middle-class and white children. The book states, "Someone else can't want a good life for you. You have got to want it for yourself," (Kozol 86). This statement expresses the idea that no one can guide an individual to a secure life, but that only the individual themselves can achieve that goal. It may be true that the individual's environment can influence the individual towards an education, but only the individual can begin their quest towards an education if it is wanted. No one will baby an individual and help them through the process because the individual will be responsible for wanting and maintaining an education. The book states, "Most of the students in this school won't go to college. Many of them will join the military. If there's a war, we have to fight. Why should I go to war and fight for opportunities I can't enjoy-for things rich people value, for their freedom, but I do not have that freedom and I can't go to their schools?" (Kozol 104). Many students will not go to school, but instead join the military in order to fight for their country. Others, however, do not believe in joining the military and fighting for the country because poor and minority
In his speech, “Remarks by the President in a National Address to America’s Schoolchildren,” Obama effectively argues his claim, that kids should go to school and try very hard to succeed to schoolchildren around the U.S. He effectively argues his claim because he uses supporting details and stories of students that have undergone tough situations, but still overcame those obstacles to succeed and school. Also, he is trying to tell kids that they should do well in school to get a good job and make a difference. He also uses rhetorical appeals to help with the supporting details. One of supporting evidence that he brought up was that if someone wants to become something such as a doctor, or lawyer you will need a good education to do
Regarding the treatment of mental illness, there are two effective forms that have caused considerable debates in the field of psychology: the medical and the recovery models. While there are significant differences between these two models, they are both effective when used concurrently. The efficacy of the medical model alone is diminishing as it focuses too narrowly on treatment goals, and may ignore the needs of the client. On the other hand, the recovery model focuses on the client and allows them to take control of their treatment and rehabilitation, which helps promote positive change. Recovery is often seen as a lifelong journey that requires the client to be wholly involved in the recovery process. This is why the recovery model values
During World War II, children, women and families worked tirelessly and contributed to aiding the soldiers during their perilous fights. In 1939 through 1945, American families came together and as a community to work the hardest they ever have. Families helped one another to hold up their country with the absence of their men. “Wear it out, use it up, make it do, or do without.” (qtd. In FDR and The American Crisis), were words stressed to the women and children for support. The sacrifices the families made on the homefront, became just as paramount as the battlefronts. If the choices that were made didn’t prevail, the success of the war wouldn’t have ensued.
My knee jerk reaction to Pat Buchanan’s article was irritation. He seems to cherish an almost imaginary America—since when was this nation united in culture? From its very beginnings, the US has seen thousands of diverse cultures; from just the top of my head there were the Puritans, the Native Americans, the unique slave culture that developed on large plantations, the Italians in big cities, the Japanese on the West Coast, and the culture I’m assuming Buchanan wishes could unite America: the White Anglo-Saxon Protestants.
A June 2016 report by Mother Jones reporter Shane Bauer, who worked as a prison guard for four months to research his article, says that one fifth of prison inmates have been physically assaulted by another prisoner or a guard. Between 3% and 9% of male inmates say they have been sexually assaulted behind bars suggesting that up to 180,000 current inmates may have been sexually assaulted of which only 8,800 cases have been officially reported. Women, who form 7% of the total prison population, have higher figures for sexual victimization. Some 22% of all cases of inmate-on-inmate and 33% of staff-on-inmate sexual assaults are on women (Bauer, 2016).
“The whole problem with news on television comes down to this all the words uttered in an hour of news coverage could be printed on one page of a newspaper”. The average news cast is only twenty-two minutes long, and that's not nearly enough time to cover the days events. In Neil Postman’s essay “The News” Postman talks about the structure, content, and goals and results of a television news cast. The news can be compared to the theatres in terms of its structure. According to Postman, “Music takes us immediately into the realm of the symbolic, a world that is not to be taken literally.”
Overall, Jonathan Capehart’s paper is relatively biased. The Washington Post does have a section of its website dedicated to opinions; there is even a bold “OPINIONS” on the header if it is going to be an article involving them. Capehart’s article, however, is not under the “OPINIONS “category, therefore he should have maintain as unbiased persona throughout the article. The first sentence in Capehart’s article is, “In the 45-minute “festival of narcissism” that was Donald Trump’s rambling presidential announcement, one particularly nasty passage proved him to be a menace to the Republican Party.” The word choice Capehart uses in his thesis and opening statement essentially announces that he is not in favor of Donald Trump. Throughout his paper,

Most soldiers did not get a chance to finish college or even high school when the war started. The government decided to step in and assist the soldiers, they passed a bill called the GI Bill which gave people who served in the armed forces a way to earn a living coming back home. According to the article in Life magazine on veterans attending college on the GI Bill, the picture shows overjoyed families going door to door getting former soldiers who are ready to earn a degree at school. This symbolizes how people cherished and utilized opportunities the bill gave them to better their lives. Sometimes the GI Bill could not offer people education, a result of mishaps causing soldiers to have physical or mental problems. The soldiers may not want the education or have not gone through enough school to get into college. According to the picture where veterans are waiting for housing under the GI Bill. the other option was to give the veterans a place to live if they could not afford
