Why would I want to have a thirty-minute conversation with the now deceased Syracuse Alum and NFL player Jim Brown? Jim Brown is a strong African American male who had lived through different stages of life, someone who acquired great knowledge growing up. Brown was and still is now a hero, someone most athletes look up to, someone who has motivated me after learning about the history of him. He dealt with racism in his lifetime, the transitions from being home with family all his life to the college life. Additionally, Brown was capable of staying on top of his academics, while participating in athletics. Furthermore, I feel as if in a way we are connected, both black males who looked to use football as a way to more opportunities in life,

Christopher Lyn "Chris" Davis (born March 17, 1986), nicknamed "Crush Davis", is an American professional baseball first baseman who is a free agent. He stands 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall and weighs 230 pounds (100 kg). Davis played in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Texas Rangers from 2008 until being traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 2011, where he remained until the end of the 2015 season. He bats left-handed and throws right-handed. While primarily a first baseman throughout his career, Davis has also played third base, designated hitter, and right field.

In Jim’s early life he was born in Logan County, Kentucky in April of 1796. When Jim was six years old his family moved to Bayou Boeuf, Louisiana in 1802. In Louisiana, he developed the spirit of adventure. His usual hobby was wrestling alligators and just exploring around the areas he lived by. In 1812 he enlisted in the Louisiana militia after the start of the war in 1812 against the British but he was too late to see any action. Soon he was back in the Louisiana selling timber. But with the money that he earned he bought slaves. Jim later met Jean Lafitte, who was a gulf coast pirate who was involved with illegal slave smuggling. Ronald Gene Simmons Sr. was born July 15, 1940. He was originally from Chicago, Illinois, but moved to Little Rock, Arkansas with his mother and stepfather. His stepfather, William D. Griffen, was a civil engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Simmon’s biological father, William Simmons, died when he was only three years old. Ronald Gene Simmons Sr. eventually dropped out of school and joined the U.S. Navy. In 1963, he left the navy. Two years later, he joined the air force for twenty two years. Simmons retired in 1979 with the rank of master sergeant.

Think of the many innovative black people out there. Although you have your typical, well known black athletes and musicians, consider other ways africans americans have made groundbreaking discoveries. African american in the medical field are especially underrated to many people. One surgeon by the name of Daniel Hale Williams deserves some recognition for what he has done for black surgeons and doctors.

Billy Gene Phillips Sr. was born to Clara Faye and Carl James Phillips on January 15, 1958 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. My grandfather grew up in Oklahoma City for the most part of his life. He was raised with three siblings, James Dean Phillips, Donna Faye Conway, and Virginia Ann Terry. He was the second to youngest child in his family. At the age of sixteen he met my grandmother Bonnie Walker, which later married on February 6, 1976 at the age of nineteen. They lived in Dibble, Oklahoma, where they raised five kids, David Phillips, Billy Phillips Jr., Bonnie Phillips, Regenia Phillips, and Virginia Phillips. He had seven grandchildren. In 2003 he fought his son Billy Phillips Jr. In a custody battle for three of his grandchildren, because he didn't believe they were given the best life.

Robert Davis was an African American man. He was not a “thug,” he was not a “drunk,” he was a retired school teacher from New Orleans who was in his sixties. He was brutally attacked by three police officers. He suffered a broken nose and other broken bones in his face. The incident was recorded and went viral. Davis was arrested but faced no charges. Three police officers were charged but only two went to trial. In the end, two of the police officers were fired — the third never made it to trial because he had committed suicide. Davis was compensated for the assault.

From birth, it’s the experiences that shape who we become. James Farmer was a boy that was the first generation born out of slavery. He was born in Marshall, TX to a father who was a minister and a mother who would stay at home. My intellectual development was simpler than that of James Farmer, due to the time period in which he grew up in that affected his education, the way he was parented and because of the color of his skin.

To become a president you must be 35 years old. You must be a resident of the United States for 14 years. Must be a natural-born citizen of the United States (can be born abroad of parents who are American citizens).When you become president you serve as commander in chief of the armed forces, commission officers of the armed forces, receive ambassadors, and appoint officials to lesser offices. The president is responsible for the execution and enforcement of the laws created by Congress.

Kenny Garrett is one of my favorite Alto saxophone players. He was born in Detroit, in 1960 and started to play saxophone in his childhood since his father also played tenor sax. Kenny Garrett’s career as a saxophonist started early at the age of 17 with a saxophone spot in Mercer Ellington’s revived Ellington Orchestra. And then he seated in Mel Lewis’ group (a traditional route for young and aspiring jazzers), and performing Charles Mingus’ music with Dannie Richmond Quartet. Garrett earned a complete musical education, in a series of surprisingly mainstream jazz groups, considering his edgy and experimental, funky style.
