Garfield, is an American comic character created by Jim Davis in 1978. It tells the story of a cat named Garfield, his owner Jon and their dog named Odie. I all started in 1970 when the comic artist Jim Davis decided to take a troll of the comic books in order to introduce a new, interesting and relatable character and he realized that dogs were doing great but there were no cats at that time. Davis figured that as he grew up on a farm with 25 cats, he could come up with a strip based on cats. He then continued to create a strip with a cat as its main character and thus created Garfield. At first, Garfield consisted of four main characters. Davis was inspired from his grandfather for Garfield’s name and personality; who Davis described as “a large cantankerous man”. Jon Arbuckel was inspired from a 1950’s coffee commercial, Odie the dog was based a car dealer commercial Davis wrote and Odie’s owner who was created for Jon to have someone to talk to. Garfield’s animation debut was first on CBS show named “The Fantastic Funnies” aired in May 15th 1980 voiced by actor Scott Beach. Since, Garfield was one of the strips features therefore it was introduced as a newcomer. From 1982 to 1991 twelve primetime Garfield cartoon specials and one hour long primetime documentary was aired celebrating the Garfield’s 10th anniversary. A television cartoon show “Garfield and friends” aired for seven seasons from 1988 to 1994. These adaptations of Garfield also lime lighted Lorenzo as the voice of Garfield.
