Jim Jones and the People's Temple Reverend Jim Jones was the charismatic leader of the Peoples Temple, a religious organization that hit its stride in the mid-1970s. Jones and his Temple are best known for the mass murder/suicide that was executed Guyana in 1978. Over 900 people drank cyanide-laced Kool Aid at Jones’ command, an action that Jones referred to as “revolutionary suicide protesting the conditions of an inhumane world” (Stept). Someone watching Jones at work gathering followers for the Temple and spreading the Temple’s vision would never have been able to envision the ultimate end of Jones’ reign. Jones’ consistency in his vision and dedication to Jonestown were his biggest strength in his management of trust. His followers were able to trust him because of his unwavering belief in his vision and opinions. Jones also always had strong management of self. In his youth, he discovered his natural speaking skill and his ability to manipulate. Over time, he worked toward developing these talents and used them extensively to spread his vision. He knew his talents so well that he was even able to choose his most efficient medium, religion, through which to push his vision. He was attracted to organized religion mostly because it was a place where he could use his excellent oratory skills and ability to coerce people into doing what he wanted them to, and therefore served as the best vehicle for his goal of social change (Wikipedia). Out of Bennis’ ten competencies of dynamic leaders, Jim Jones strongly exhibits four. The trait of self-knowledge and the competency of management of self are defined almost identically, so the previously discussed qualities that give him strong self-management are the same qualities that exemplify his strong self-knowledge. Jones was also a risk-taker, which is obvious is almost every serious decision he ever made. He created what was essentially a brand new branch of religion.
