Introduction Joe Montana is, arguably, one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. He set tons of records, passed for thousands of yards, and scored a handful of last-minute game-winning touchdowns. Joe Montana played for the San Francisco 49's and the Kansas City Chiefs in his fifteen year career; from 1979-1994. During this time, Joe Montana changed the way we play football today. In this paper, I'll be telling you more about his NFL career, college career, early childhood influences, and some of the many records that he's set. Montana spent most of his first season as a backup for the 49's, only throwing twenty-three passes. It wasn’t until the mid 1980's season until Montana became the starting quarterback. In 1981 Montana went into the season as starting quarterback for the 49's. That season was one of the most successful seasons for the NFL at that time. With Montana's strong performance, and two comeback wins from the fourth quarter, the team finished the season with 13-3. The Miami Dolphins had finished their 1972 season with no losses; at the time, a regular season was composed of only fourteen games. This meant that in 1984, when the 49's finished their season with a record of 15-1 (after the NFL changed the rules to fifteen games a season) they became the first team to win fifteen games in one season; with the help of Montana. With this great season, Montana was sent was of course sent to his second pro bowl, and the 49's went into the playoffs dominating and earning their spot in the 1984 Super Bowl. In that game against the Dolphins, Montana completed twenty-four out of thirty-five passes, and threw for three-hundred-thirty-one yards, setting a Super Bowl record for passing yards. To assist his passing, he also rushed for fifty-nine yards. The 49's blew the Dolphins out of the water (pun intended) with a winning score of 38-16. This earned Montana his second Super Bowl MVP award. The 49's coach event stated after the game that, " Joe Montana is the greatest quarterback today..." Then again in 1988, Montana earned another trip to the Super Bowl where he threw three first half touchdowns and sealed a win against Minnesota; 34-9. In 1990, Montana finished with a 14-2 record and earned the title as Sportsman of the year from Sports Illustrated. Skipping forward to 1993 and 1994, Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
