The discussion of the views of creation account, the age of the universe, and the historicity of Adam and Eve has produced much debate throughout history. However, the debates do not limit the immeasurable and prevailing nature of God, especially his ability to occupy both space and time. In keeping with a traditional view, I believe in the inspiration and infallible word of God, and if studied carefully the answers can easily be revealed through biblical text. First, I believe in the literal six-day creation account which harmonizes with the natural concept of a 24-hour day period. God is omnipotent. He could have easily spoken everything into existence at one time. However, his creative nature allowed for the timely formation of all elements …show more content…
Taking the geological time idea into consideration would have been implausible, because it would have required God to rest for thousands or millions of years. It is amazing how scientists and theorists cannot phantom the idea of the universe being created in such a short period of six days. However, it is interesting that before the nineteenth century and Darwinism, the question was not the length of time, but why was the universe not created quicker. According to Tremper Longman, “In the sixteenth century John Calvin encountered skeptism concerning the biblical account because it took God so long to create.” John Walton states, “It is not the text that causes people to think otherwise, only the demands of trying to harmonize with modern …show more content…
However, there are many scriptures that give insight into what happened before “in the beginning.” Francis Schaeffer states, “The Scripture speaks of a promise made by the Father to the Son or to the Holy Spirit because, after all, at this particular point of sequence there was no one else to make the promise to.” Therefore, the statement “in the beginning” does not limit the age of the universe to a short period of time, but expands it into time. John shares that God loved Jesus before the foundation of the earth (Jn 17:24). This shows that the foundation of the universe goes back to infinity.
When viewed from a geological standpoint, the earth is stated to be more than 4.6 billion years old. Many archeologists, geologists, and other scientists use a variety of means to date the earth, such as rock facies or archeological findings. These discoveries are only a guess, hypothesis, or theory that cannot be logically proven. Although I do not believe the earth to be millions or billions of years old, but I do believe that something happened before “in the beginning,” and between Gen 1:1 and
Scientists have found that the Earth was formed about 4.6 billion years ago by collisions in the giant disc-shaped cloud of material that also formed the Sun. As gravity slowly gathered this gas and dust together into clumps, it became asteroids and small early planets called planetesimals. These objects collided repeatedly and gradually got bigger, building up the planets in the Solar System. Although scientists are very close to answering the question, they still continue to search for the exact answer to how the Earth was created. With all the evidence presented, it is hard to refute from scientific theories. This becomes cumbersome to many religions because in their eyes God has always been the creator of the Earth.
Properly dating the book of Genesis would allow us to build a timeline of creation which we can be used to trace back to day one of creation. However, this is extremely difficult to determine for two fundamental reasons: (1) the Bible provides no controllable statis- tical data that apply to the problem of absolute chronology; (2) most of the events took place in the preliterate period for which we have no extrabiblical written documents. (Ch. 1 Pg. 28)
Newman is quick to point out that there are many variations of the old earth creationist position. Of these, however, he finds three main varieties, which differ primarily in their views on the nature of the days of the creation week. These three categories are: (1) The day-age view. As implied by the title, this view considers the days to be chronological, but not 24-hour periods. Rather, they are long spans of time,
There have been attempts to dethrone God from His rightful position as a creator and at the helm of this is evolution theory. The bible clearly states that the world is 6,000 years today but when you read scientific articles it will tell you the world has been in existence for billions of years.
The young-Earth view on the original creation of the Earth and all that inhabits it is a six literal day creation by God. This view does not try to hypothesize on the unobserved past, rather this view is based off of the Genesis account recorded in the scriptures. “The language of Genesis chapters 1 and 2 are technically precise and linguistically clear. Any reader would understand that the author of those pages intended to convey a normal six-day creation” (Creation was 24/6. N.d). “Genesis is history, not poetry, parable, prophetic vision, or mythology” (Mortenson, 2011). The foundation of the young-Earth viewpoint starts with God as the omnipotent spiritual being from eternity past who spoke all things into existence. In the first day God created light and separated it from darkness (Gen 1:3-5). On the second day God created an expanse and separated waters above and below
Between the Billion and Thousand years theory, both have a great point of views. They both have scientific beliefs and biblical believes. One thing between both is that we have documented or spiritual writings on which one is true. The Geologic scale provide dates and good scientific measurement. There is scientific research that dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 millions years. If we go by the bible it states that its less then that. To understand the why the billion years can be far fetch to believe one would have to understand the Bible and choose to read and listen to the word of God vice the word of man.
The language in the book of Genesis only occurs when there is a literal view of time. The fact was that the earth was without form and void may help us to understand why readings are sometimes so random and/or old. The writings of Scripture and the writings of Ellen White both argue for a young earth, although we cannot determine the exact date.
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound? If God created the earth and no one was around to see it, did it still happen? The answer to both of these questions is yes. Because of the Bible, we know that God created the earth in a literal 6, 24 hour days about 6,000 years ago. Many Christian think God may have used evolution and creation but that is not a viable theory. Methods such as Carbon Dating cannot be trusted because they have been proven inaccurate over and over again. Because radiocarbon dating is inaccurate, the literal Genesis account of creation is the one and only viable answer to where this world came from.
The information I feel is valid is what God the Creator has revealed in the Bible. There were no witnesses when He created and neither is there another universe available from which we can learn and do a comparison. (Word Count:
As early as 1600AD scholars and scientists such as Isaac Newton believed that the words written in the Book of Genesis describing the creation of the Earth and mankind were in fact true. According to most biblical timelines the Earth and mankind were created around 6,000 years ago and it has only been within the past 300 years that scientists studying geological along with archaeological evidence that we now know how the Earth was created along with the evolution of humans. Today, a combination of several types of sciences tell us that over 4,000,000,000 years ago the Earth began to form and that the modern human didn't evolve until between 400,000 to 200,000 years ago.
Mikhail Lomonosov, a Russian naturalist in the 1700s, believed that the earth was several hundred thousand years old. Such estimate was then improved when the earth was dated at 75,000 years old by Comte du Buffon, a French scientist. He established this from the rapid caliber of cooling in the rocks that he had calculated. The father of contemporary geology, Charles Lyell, attacked the idea of catastrophism and popularized the law of uniformitarianism, which is that, since the beginning of the earth, the current processes of the earth have been transpiring. Such principle resulted in more ancient estimates of the earth's age. Many scientists, around the time of Darwin, assumed an age around four hundred million years old, give or take one million years. The most widely acknowledged assessment of the earth's age today is nearly four and a half billion years old. Following these assertions, humans did not exist on the earth until about three million years ago ("What Does the Fossil Record Show?"). Therefore, because of these ancient estimates, rooted in science, the Bible is in conflict with science and should not be accepted as truth, since it advertises the creation of the world in one week, and the creation of humans within that
This presentation is about the book of Genesis in the Old Testament. Its main purpose will be to educate you, the audience on hermeneutics, the literal and contextual interpretations of the creation story, as well as the history, author, date and importance of the book of Genesis.
The question of how and when the universe was created has always been a topic of debate. Every culture has diverse beliefs which also comes with different explanations or justifications on how the world came to be. The Iroquois creation story for example is believed to be originated in the late 18th to early 19th century and ironically has similar details with the Judeo-Christian story which originated in the 12th century on the other side of the world.
In the Catholic Church, Genesis 1 explains how the universe was created by God. Gen. 1 says that God created the Earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th day. These 7 days could be a symbol that God could have created the Earth over a period of millions of years. The Bible states that the Earth was created in 7 days. This is a symbol that people know and understand; people know the seven day week. One day could be equivalent to a million years. There is no evidence that makes readers believe the Earth was created in seven 24-hour days.
The Bible claimed that Adam and Eve lived 6000 years ago, yet the fossils of the first humans, Homo Habilis has been dated to 2.865 million years ago.
