John Adams was born on October 30th 1735, in Braintree, Massachusetts on his family farm. His father Deacon John Adams was a deacon of the church and also at times the town’s tax collector, constable, and lieutenant of the militia. Senior John Adams passed away in 1761 from the flu epidemic. Johns mother Susanna Boylston Adams was known to have a fiery temper. She remarried to Lt. John Hall, in 1766. John Adams did not seem to get along with his new stepfather. As a child John’s father taught him to read, Adams attended a series of schools. His father had dreams of him going to Harvard and becoming a minister. Following his father’s dreams for him he went to Harvard in 1751, a year older than the usual student at that time. John Adams presidential term lasted from March 4, 1797 – March 4, 1801. He only servered one term as president. Adams was apart of the Federalsit party, he believed in a strong central government. His vice president was Thomas Jefferson, this was who he ran against and beat. This was a big problem because Jefferson was a demoract-republican, and it was hard for bills to pass because Adams would approve and Jefferson would not. This resulted in not many laws getting passed. In 1797, during the wake of the French revolution Adams sent of three diplomats to france to negotiate with French forgein minister Charles Maurice de Talleyrand- Perigord. This was because French leaders decided to issue an order allowing for the seizure of American merchant ships. So Adams sent Elbridge Gerry, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and John Marshall. When these men arrived the thought they would meet the minister but instead they were approached by several repersentatives, Jean Hottinguer (X), Pierre Bellamy (Y), and Lucien Hauteval (Z.) The French demanded for money in order to stop the attacks. This is where famous quote “Millions For Defense but not one cent for tribute!” came from. When americans heard how we had been treated by the French many wanted to go to war, George Washington was willing to come out of reteriment just to lead the army.
