Did you know that John Brown can be described as either a hero or a villain? John Brown is an abolitionist who is controversial because he can be considered either a hero or a villain, based on the evidence that is given. For example, he killed multiple people, which could make him a villain, but he did it to free slaves, which could make him a hero. This is important because it is very important to know whether John Brown was a hero or a villain and why. John Brown is a villain because he committed multiple crimes, he tried to start a revolution, he was a part of a group of people who killed one white master and took property, and he even arrested someone’s husband and two kids and killed them in cold blood. Typically, villains commit multiple murders. This is true because at Pottawatomie he killed multiple people in many brutal ways and what he did alienated even his anti-slavery supporters. John Brown is a villain because he committed treason. According to Document C, in 1857, he hid 1,000 pikes in a farm in Maryland and had intended to use the pikes to start a revolution, but was caught and hanged. Also, “he attempted one of the greatest crimes against society, the stirring up of a servile and civil war”. Document H, Source #4. Usually, people who commit treason are not good people. It said in Document H, he said that he attempted the stirring up of a civil war. Also, he had intended to start a revolution, and both of these show that he committed treason. John Brown was a villain because he took property. It says in Document A, that in 1859 he was part of a company that took property. Also, in Document F, it says that he committed the destruction of some property at Harpers Ferry. Generally, people who take or destroy property are not good people.
