Master of Reality In John Darnielle’s Master of Reality, he focuses on constructing a story in which the protagonist’s disturbed, bleak mind is echoed through Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality album. Considering the protagonist deeply relates and finds communication through the album, each song becomes representative of a different emotion, event, or moment. Darnielle is able to establish this connection by drawing from themes found throughout the Black Sabbath album. In particularly, the principal encapsulating theme is that of “philosophical pessimism”. Roger uses “Into the Void” as a more creative philosophical avenue for his thought. For example, Roger states “I was going to start just answering him in Ozzy lyrics just to see if he would even notice.” (Darnielle, 20) and then references a line from “Into the Void.” By doing this, Roger is establishing how little Gary cares about him, revealing more thought.
