Master of Reality In John Darnielle’s Master of Reality, he focuses on constructing a story in which the protagonist’s disturbed, bleak mind is echoed through Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality album. Considering the protagonist deeply relates and finds communication through the album, each song becomes representative of a different emotion, event, or moment. Darnielle is able to establish this connection by drawing from themes found throughout the Black Sabbath album. In particularly, the principal encapsulating theme is that of “philosophical pessimism”. (Jacobsen) This theme translates almost effortlessly into being a central theme of the novella, as the protagonist, Roger, struggles with understanding his mental illness; he is greatly upset …show more content…
Roger uses “Into the Void” as a more creative philosophical avenue for his thought. For example, Roger states “I was going to start just answering him in Ozzy lyrics just to see if he would even notice.” (Darnielle, 20) and then references a line from “Into the Void.” By doing this, Roger is establishing how little Gary cares about him, revealing more thought. Later, when Roger has aged ten years, he comments again on “Into the Void.” In the scene, he is cutting up meat for hamburgers at his job. He completely becomes absorbed into the music, and uses it to express how he …show more content…
This is reinforced by Black Sabbath fans, as they provide commentary on the sound. For instance, a fan, Metal_Thrasher90 states that the song has an “absolutely heavy tone”. It also makes sure to “deny the cheesy hippie philosophy”. (mental-archives.com) As a person suffering from a mental illness, Roger would greatly appreciate songs that he could relate to, likely a reason for his obsession with Master of Reality. Marktheviktor also proclaimed that “Into the Void” “strengthens the overall heaviness of Master of Reality.” (mental-archives.com) Similarly, “Into the Void” strengthens the significance of Roger’s meat cutting-moment. “Into the Void” increases the dense, gloomy tone to the album as a whole, just as it intensifies the sadness of Roger’s reality. Because other fans extracted and identified the weight of “Into the Void”, Roger is given more support for his opinions. Also, Roger’s emotional reactions and deeper thoughts are emphasized by the heaviness of the song, which is highlighted by the fan
To start, there are many quotes from the book that can describe this theme. An example is on page 2, right
In this work, there are great uses of figurative language, tone, symbolism, and irony that is used in creating a masterpiece that goes into much detail as such. There is no one set tone for this novel, it jumps around from happy, sad, anger, depressing, and joyfulness. In the beginning of the novel when Louie wants to run in the Berlin Olympics the tone is very hopeful. As we get towards the middle of the novel when Louie was scared, floating on a raft the tone changes to depressing. When Louie was an alcoholic and neglecting his wife and kid the author’s tone became hateful.
Theme: One theme from this novel is the American Dream. “Always certain of what he wanted from the world, Mr. Clutter had in large measure obtained it. On his left hand […] he wore a plain gold band […] which was the symbol, a quarter-century old, of his marriage to the person he had wished to marry…" (6) This quote demonstrates Herb’s embodiment of the American Dream. He has worked hard in his life, and been able to achieve everything he aims for. Another theme in this novel is mental illness. “She was "nervous," she suffered "little spells"—such were the sheltering expressions used by those close to her. Not that
For example my first quote that connects back to the main theme is the morning after Mildred takes all the pills and has to come get her blood pumped by machines, “ I wanted to talk to you last night. Says Montag. You took all the pills in your bottle last night.” What this quote proves is that even the people who pretend to be happy during this era are still struggling behind closed doors. Especially Mildred, the next day she could not even admit to taking all the pills. Yet the most horrific part about all this was how normalized it was, even to the paramedics. After

A feeling readily distinguishable for Charlie, who became scarred off his reflective experience in the library. This purposelessness is apparent in a moment in our lives where we are short of ideas with what do with it. Associable with Charlie’s reaction on reading the horrific atrocities committed by people like Edgar Cooke notorious for his unreasonable, random, ruthless murder of people. And of Sylvia Likens, who is inhumanely abused like being, “made to live in the cellar with the dogs.” Page 111. Apart from Charlie, how would you have feel hearing that? Doesn’t that flame of resignation burn within you? Well, it clearly did for Charlie who suddenly experiences a surge of uncertainty and ponders to himself,”I don’t know what to do with myself... I wish you could unknow all I’ve learned. “ Charlies’s pondering could be considered Silvey’s warning to us the audience of these depressive moments postponed for us. Unfortunately, many of us have remained under the radar of Silvey’s notice. With over 13.3% of youth unemployed, according to Trading Economies. These are people like us aged 18-25 years whose has been denied a future motion into life, serving as an obstacle to their desires of prosperity. A denied prosperity forces both us, the readers and Charlie into a state of, “I don’t know what to

The opening riff, played by Iommi, heard in the beginning of the song creates the Heavy Metal genre right away. There are an emphasis on sophisticated and distinctive guitar solos and loud banging drums that are amplified by a sustained, distorted nervous energy to go along with the simple shrieking verses throughout the song, a highly valued characteristic of heavy metal genre. The musical style shifts from dancing to repeated listening pleasure. Ozzy’s howling and screeching vocals express mental anguish such as, “And so as you hear these words telling you now of my state… I tell you to enjoy life I wish I could
The use of symbolism and imagery is beautifully orchestrated in a magnificent dance of emotion that is resonated throughout the poem. The two main ideas that are keen to resurface are that of personal growth and freedom. Furthermore, at first glimpse this can be seen as a simple poem about a women’s struggle with her counterpart. However, this meaning can be interpreted more profoundly than just the causality of a bad relationship.
Another main idea that is explored in this novel is hope. Hope is explored in this novel as there are many situations where the characters have faith and believe in God to help them pass these tough challenges.
