John F. Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, to Joseph Kennedy and Rose Kennedy. Kennedy, for the first decade of his life lived in Brookline and attended the Edward Devotion School, Noble and Greenough lower school, and Dexter School. With his father’s focus mostly on his work with Wall Street and Hollywood, his father was usually gone for lengths of time. For Kennedy’s 5th through 7th grade years in school his family had moved to Riverdale, New York, where he attended private school at Riverdale Country School, which was a private school for boys. During his 8th grade year Kennedy attended Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, but in April 1933 Kennedy had an appendectomy which caused him to have to withdraw from the school so that he could recuperate. On September 24, 1941 Kennedy, with some help from the director of the Office of Naval Intelligence, Kennedy joined the United States Naval Reserves. From July 27, 1942 to September 27, 1942 Kennedy attended the Officer Training School at northern University in Chicago, Illinois. October 10th he was promoted to lieutenant junior grade and was assign to the Motor Torpedo Squadron 4. Later he was assign to Motor Torpedo Squadron 2 were he took command of PT-109. Will in command of PT-109, on his 31st mission he had spotted a Japanese destroyer. While trying to turn toward the destroyer he the boat was rammed and split in half. After gathering those who had survived, they all began to swim toward a small island three miles away, with Kennedy towing on of the badly injured crewmembers by a life jacket. Later after being rescued from a second island they had swam to, Kennedy and one of his crew members were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism and the Purple Heart Medal for the back injury he had got from the
