No one knew they would be getting into this mess. John Hanstrange was a farmer boy and he had never fought in a war. The date was March 3, 1863. The war had started two years ago and and it did not show sign of stopping anytime soon. John had been taken away from his home earlier that month and had been taken to the Confederate army. He was a scrawny boy with blonde hair and blues eyes. His days consisted of pulling weeds and picking at his humongous pimples.
His first day in the army was not as he had planned. He arrived and was immediately swept into the swing of this movement. He was given a gun, gunpowder, and the uniform. The army had been marching for over six hours so they took a rest for the night. A young boy came up to the woozy

He gave some of his food to the hungry John. John gave him thanks and exclaimed that he had never walked this much before. Shortly after, this new friend told him to get some rest because they would be walking a lot the next day. John was full of bliss for having made a new friend in this unfamiliar world.
He couldn’t sleep much that night. John had been kept awake from the chirping of the crickets and the buzzing of the bees. Noises like that were unfamiliar to the him for he had usually slept inside in the comfort of having walls and never worried of being crept up on.
The next morning, groggily, John and his new friend woke up to the triumphant yells of generals. The grass was damp from the night before for it had rained a thunderous rain. John’s general, General Hartford, was a stern looking man and didn’t like goofing off at all. Every time a soldier peeped a word while marching he would hit them with the end of his sword and tell them to stop talking. John marched alongside his new friend and didn’t say a word. After hours of marching they took a break and ate a small lunch of an apple and very watered-down soup. Once John started his bowl of soup a large boy walked over. He was about the age of twenty-three and had a messed up smile and didn’t talk clearly. He yelled, “Gimme your soup or I’ll beat you

He ran right by the general's tent and went straight down to the river. John ran through all the fields they had walked through just to get there. He did not where he was going but he knew his way back to James. Nightfall came upon him shortly.
He stopped for the night at a small tree. The tree went up about 7 feet and branched out from there. Covering his head with his hat he eventually fell asleep.
The next morning he got up at about midday and started on his way back to James. At this point he was about a mile or two away from James. John reached James and saw him laying on the ground with his head still against the same tree. He came over and picked up James’ head and touched his face. The blood was still there and by now it was crusty and smelled rancid. The afternoon sunshine shone down on James’ face. There was nothing left for the boy to do now.
John stood there above him and started to feel a tear roll down his cheek. He was crying. He never really got to know the boy but that boy helped him so much and he did not even realize it.
John bent down and covered the boy’s face with his hat and said, “Goodbye…

The battle was going to be at Wilson's Creek, Missouri. The north planed to attack the rebels at dawn and by surprise. They failed to surprise the rebels, lost hundreds of men and the battle. The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history. It started April 12, 1861, and ended May 9, 1865, in spite of the fact that many believed it would end up shorter. Because of the war, many workers left their homes and jobs to become soldiers. One enlisted soldier from Norwich, Vermont was named Daniel Currier; a farmer that left his home to the treachery of war. Daniel Currier was a soldier who trained to enter battle, nonetheless, it was not the exciting adventure he most likely expected, he probably expected to battle with the South. Even when he did get onto the battlefield, it was more horrific than he would have ever thought After this horrifying encounter with war he decided to and headed back home to his loving family and work as a farmer. As the following describes, war is not pleasant, and coming home can be comforting.
Bulimba's Oxford Street is everything that Darlinghurst's isn't. You're more likely to encounter a baby stroller and weak coffee than a severe brain injury and cheap amphetamines.
“FIRE!” the captain screamed. The battle was at a draw with both the British and Americans firing volley after volley of lead at each other. The air was filled with smoke, the screams of dying men, and rumble of artillery near by. Then, all of a sudden the British pulled back and headed to their camp. The Americans were also heading back to their camp. The battle had started 2 days ago and both sides couldn’t break each other’s hold on the other. Both generals didn’t know what to do, but both vowed to never surrender.
John is a noble man, I am sure of it. He’s been with me ever since I arrived at camp, and stayed by my side ever since. He is aiding me in my quest of bringing some sense into our General and showing Lee to stay in line. Though I would never have thought it would turn into a duel between the 2… It started out as a simple argument between John and Lee, but when Lee insulted Washington, John challenged him to a duel. I am, of course, John’s second, while Lee called on his comrade Major Evan Edwards, brother of Washington’s surgeon Dr. Enoch Edwards. That’s how I find myself somehow waiting in Philadelphia in the blistering cold on Christmas Eve.
It’s time for role call!” screamed the general’s right hand man. The officers and soldiers took their places as their names were called in alphabetical order. The drummer boy took his place in line and straightened out his back. They reached the last name of the list and not a sound was heard. This was it, they were going to fight, people were going to die. The boy adjusted his drum one last time and re gripped his drumsticks, finding the general’s kind eyes in the crowd. The general called out an order, “Move out”! Putting on a brave face and thinking back to all the words of encouragement the general had offered, the drummer boy took the first step to his destiny. Though many would die, he would remain strong. He would not allow anything to get to him when he had an entire army counting on his abilities. He knew, if he failed, the militia would fall with

The 1860s was a time where young boys were stripped away their youth and innocence and force to grow up way too fast. Many battles were fought during this time period, fields were scattered with lifeless bodies of young boys who never got to experience life. The story evolves around an adolescent male named Joby, who questions his purpose and bravery the night before a big battle. He believes that except from his drum, he has no one else. It was November 3rd, 1864 in Greensboro Alabama. Cold and snowy on a Sunday morning. I looked outside and noticed the cotton fields covered with snow and turned to Master Lee and said "Sir, it's snowing what are we going to do about the field". He looked at me with a smirk on his face and began to laugh as he said "Why you worried about the damn snow, get to washing my clothes". As I walked away in silence, heading up the steps to get the dirty clothes I noticed little Johnny in the room crying. "Little Johnny what's the matter, I said as I stood outside his bedroom door". But little Johnny didn’t respond. He didn’t even bother to look up at me, so I walked out and went on to wash the clothes.
