For this essay, special attention had to be paid to the audience I was writing to, namely the John P. Stevens High School administration. My audience has a deep interest in the academics of the school’s students, and will seek to improve the school policy if it is clear that there are foreseeable benefits to the plan. In the past, the administration has always been contacted first whenever there have been proposals by students such as creating a new club or adding more food items to the lunch menu. The administration will be responsive to me because I am approaching them with a solution to a perceived problem. As such, I made sure to use a respectful tone and sophisticated diction to show them that I appreciate their time and effort into reading my proposal and considering my arguments. …show more content…
For example, I mention a survey I took with the help of the school newspaper. The survey asked students to answer how many hours of sleep they got on average each day. The effect of mentioning the survey was to show the administration that the students have admitted to not meeting the sleep requirement as set out by medical experts. Additionally, I went in-depth with the elaboration of my proposed schedule, addressing all attributes of the current schedule such as passing time and lunch hours. The purpose of this analysis was to provide a clear explanation of what my schedule would entail, so in case the administration had any doubts, they could refer back to my paper. I wanted them to see that I put in a lot of effort into researching, talking to other JPS alums, and creating the schedule so they would take my proposal
In the city of Los Angeles is Fremont High School, and unlike most schools in the country, this one runs on a three-track schedule, meaning that it is open year round with short numerous breaks throughout the year. The school contains 3,300 students in attendance year round and being that the school is lacking in funds and hindering the students from following their dreams, this is very impactful on a large amount of people beause it lacks also preparation for college. In the article, “Fremont High School”, Jonathan Kozol examines the conditions of Fremont High School from the perspective of the students, and teachers alike. He uses statistics that have been submitted to the courts during depositions and student recounts of activity. Jonathan Kozol uses persuasive techniques such as ethos, logos, and pathos in the article, “Fremont High School”, to persuade the audience, members of society, that they can help by providing funds, because of the lack of funding it has caused a disservice to the students, causing students to struggle with following their dreams.
There are many take-aways I have learned from attending this course. The first take away that stood out to me from this course would be responded to my fellow classmates during group discussions. Not only did this serve as an opinion-based discussion, but I gained vast knowledge on different topics pertaining to policy advocacy. The second take away that stood out to me would have to the online skills advocacy assignment. This assignment helped me to explore several ideas and perform research on how to advocate for a population that was in need. Every school district has board meetings throughout the school year. Unfortunately, many parents, community members, & school personnel do not attend such important meetings because they don’t realize or understand the importance of such board meetings or how informative they can be. The main policy goal’s PEAK would like to see receive recognition are education related policy. This is because education and advancement in this area, would directly affect PEAK’s target audience. The demographic they are serving would be high schoolers and preparing them to further their education. By pushing for better educational standards and policy it will create more success in different areas. The goal would not be to introduce new legislation, but simply take a stand on what would be best for the students as they further their educational career. The next school to present was Floyd C. Fretz Middle School by their principles Mrs. Slaven and Mrs Signor. Overall, Fretz scored an 84.5%. Looking over the information they received from the state, they concluded that the math program was doing well. Mrs. Slaved credited the students for their hard work. In addition to crediting the students, the principle said that the teachers have implemented a new program called HERE. HERE is a program where a teacher “adopts” a student and mentors them whether it is to improve academically or socially. The staff at Fretz feels the program works well with students who are at risk but does not do much for the advanced students. In class we discussed that middle school is a challenging time period for adolescence. I think the program they have implemented will help to greatly ease the challenges students face. In class we
Public school systems need to be more sensitive to their students. Parents play the major role in determining a child’s academic outcome, but the school system needs to notice children who don’t necessarily acknowledge their gift. These children need guidance -- I believe it is the schools’ responsibility to provide it to them. I have been through a situation that makes me feel strongly about the subject. My example is an indisputable case in point.
Educational policies are the rules, guidelines and or boundaries that have shaped my career as student, a teacher and most recently as an educational administrator. Throughout my career I have not questioned always questioned the reasons for the development of these policies. From the readings in this course, I have begun to examine the how and why of policy development and beginning to understand role the policy analysis has in the evaluation of educational policies over time. The role of the state, the role of the individual within the state, changes to political ideologies and the development of globalization have all directly impacted policy development and the directions that education has taken over the last century.
