A Tragic hero is a character who experiences a major downfall as the results of a personal mistake or the workings of fate. From the beginning of the novel, where he challenges the outdated and immoral practices of the church, to the end of the novel, where he sacrifices himself to disprove the existence of witchcraft in the town, John Proctor mimics Jesus' journey to save the world. In 1692, witchcraft was known as an evil sin to be commited on Earth, if accused of witchcraft, trial and execution was likely to happen and proceeded to happen to many innocent people. One well-known accussal was that of John Proctor. Proctor had committed adultery with Abigail Williams, a previous maid of the Proctor house, and once coming clean for his sin, in turn of events backfires and is accused of witchcraft. John Proctor is seen as a protagonist of the story full of courage and boldness when fighting for his life and good name in court. At the time, all possible outcomes were not at the top of his head but then he had to go through twists and turns to save his wife, Elizabeth, as well as himself. A tragedy is one type of play where the audience pities the characters and fear the same consequences that the characters face. In addition, tragedies often include a tragic hero who has a tragic flaw causing his or her downfall. One example of a play that is a tragedy and includes a tragic hero is the The Crucible. John Proctor in The Crucible is a true tragic hero because he possess the four characteristics of goodness, superiority, tragic flaw, and realization of his downfall.

John Proctor is one of the main characters in the Crucible. He was indicted of witchcraft because of he violated the law several times. Examples that helped the church assume he was a witch was him stating that the girls who were “possessed” were liars & frauds, setting everything up to accuse other villagers of witchcraft. He also couldn’t remember the 10 commandments, didn’t attend church regularly, & apparently plowed on Sundays which was considered a high offense back then. John’s trial was extremely unequitable.

Throughout the entire play of The Crucible, John Proctor truly grew as a person, while later fixing his sins and making moral decisions. John Proctor had truly gone through a lot in the play, both emotionally and physically, being that he was wrongfully accused of witchcraft. Although some might contradict this statement, John Proctor loved his wife, Elizabeth, because even though he may have questioned her worth in the past, he always confesses his sins and does what he can to make it right, which is a true quality of a man. Along with this, John Proctor portrays characteristics of a Puritan because he always remains true to his family, alike he must stay true to God, therefore proving to him that John Proctor always stays true.

The hardest option may be living a life as a lie, or dying to stay true to the truth. In this story The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor shows how a man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. Through the story, John faces a lot of drama and many difficulties. Even though John Proctor is imperfect, he is still truthful, courageous, and a leader.

There are many forms of heroes, some are big and obvious, others are small and unidentifiable, but either way, they make a difference in the world. In fact, there are several different kinds of heroes represented in The Crucible. In Arthur Miller's novel, the Crucible, the story takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the Salem witch trials. During this time, several people, men and women alike, are falsely accused of being witches. But you--who are you to judge your neighbor?” (James 4:12) The late 1600’s to early 1700’s was a time of much happiness as well as sorrow in the small town of Salem. one man, John Proctor, was always caught in the middle of what was going on as rumors spread that witches were in the small town. Young girls control the town and the people there live in constant fear. Proctor’s relations with one of the girls ends up causing all of this to begin, and it seems that Proctor is the only one who is trying to stop it all. He is a good man and it is shown by his perseverance, genuineness, and appearance as a Christ figure in The Crucible.

John Proctor is seen to be a very prideful and stubborn character. He is also mean-spirited when he speaks to Mary Warren about her whereabouts. But Mary has a new threshold of power, that she knows she can use against Proctor. Mary is an official of the court and aware of Proctor’s affair with Abigail. Proctor is also aware of Mary’s power and cannot deny her of it.

Who committed the greater evil? Hester Prynne or John Proctor? In The Crucible, John Proctor had a wife who was extremely ill. He committed adultery with the house servant, Abigail Williams, for that reason. Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter, was a beautiful woman living without her husband. The lonesome woman had an affair with Dimmesdale, the town’s reverend. Both John Proctor and Hester Prynne both went against the Puritan beliefs. However, John Proctor is guiltier of committing adultery compared to Hester Prynne and if John Proctor were to meet Hester Prynne, he would respect her.

Despite outspoken personality and qualities as a critical thinker, John Proctor is far from being a perfect human being. In his notes, Arthur Miller describes him as a sinner, "a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct." (P.20) Similar to Jesus who was tempted in the desert and taunted by the pharisees, Proctor's journey is riddled with hardships. He strives to overcome them and to follow his moral compass over the course of the novel. When Abigail Morris seeks him out after being fired, he has the courage to overcome his lust and to end their relationship. He boldly claims: "I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again" (P.22) Moreover, he spends months trying to regain

People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.

In The Crucible the characters all show different kind of growth throughout the story. The story is based of a town called Salem and when the Devil hit Salem all the people started to turn on each other. What started of as a little joke between girls turned into a whole game for them to play. The girls accused anyone they saw or anyone that did them wrong and each and every time those same people were hanged. Although, this play is mostly about the witchcraft the people also changed as time went by and they started to understand what was happening and why it was wrong.
