John Proctor's Reputation In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

In the play,"The Crucible", a man named John Proctor is under investigation due to several allegations made against him by a group of girls. These girls were discovered in the woods late one-night performing actions known to the town as witchcraft. As the story develops John Proctors reputation is on the line since one of the girls named Abigail comes forward about an affair between the two. Elizabeth, John's wife hears of this from the townspeople and has lost all faith in him, however, she defends John during court because she knows that reputation is not how people view you, but rather your integrity. If the affair would not have occurred in the play the outcome of the witch hunts may have been different because the girls would not have any evidence to use against John Proctor, the judge would have taken the time to consider each claim made and, Reverend would not have left the court due to unfair hearings. Once in court, the girls are not " telling the truth", which is evident to not only John Proctor, but the Reverend as well. The affair caused this uprising …show more content…

Had the affair not have taken place Elizabeth and John would not have had these emotional issues with each other. An advantage in court would have been thrown out the window because Abigail referred to this as a form of witchcraft or unholy act when testifying against John. It is evident that Abigail used the affair to shift the attention away from her wrongful act upon someone else, who happened to be John Proctor, however, without that evidence the judge would have been able to identify the shift of attention and bring it back upon her. Practicing witchcraft was illegal during this time period, although, she practiced this act within the woods late one night. John Proctor was able to witness the event and would've then had the advantage in court leading to the persecution of
