John Williams is probably one of the most well known composers in history. If there’s any doubt in anyone’s mind, just think back to some of the most iconic movies of the past (like Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and even Memoirs of a Geisha) and the most striking feature about all of these movies is their amazing soundtracks. They compel and spellbind us; tying magical stories together with even more poignant melodies to captivate the mind’s imagery.
No other composer delivers such masterful results that touch our soul than Mr. John Williams; and there are few composers that would be more decorated. As the son of a percussionist for CBS radio’s Raymond Scott Quintet, Williams learned to love music early on in life. Early in his life, Williams moved from New York to California (to Los Angeles) at the age of 16 (in 1948). He started out as a young pianist, then as the leader of his own jazz band. When he was age 15 he decided that he was going to learn to play the concert piano, and by the time he was 19, he had begun to create his own musical masterpiece- solely from a piano sonata.
Williams then attended the university of UCLA (and then Los Angeles City College), working on his musical skill and prowess. While he studied there, he worked on orchestration with an MGM associate named Robert Van Eps. Also, he was being tutored in music in private by a composer by the name of Mario Tedesco. After this tutelage, Williams further explored his musical talents when he conducted for the first time with the Air Force.
