According to Oklahoma law, first-degree murder is a person “unlawfully and with malice aforethought causes the death of another human being.” It is also not manslaughter because it is not a homicide committed without a design to effect death and in the heat of passion, but in a cruel and unusual manner, or by means of a dangerous weapon. Johnny did not have time to think and had to stab Bob to save Ponyboy’s life. Ponyboy was being drowned and to save him, Johnny had to commit the act of homicide. Johnny had to kill Bob to save Ponyboy because there was no other way around. He couldn’t have stopped them because they were drunk and looking for a fight. (pg 44 and 55) He couldn’t have fought them without a weapon because it would have been a one on five.(pg 55) He had to stab Bob to make them stop because they wouldn’t have run away. They would have drowned Ponyboy.(pg 56 and 57) To save himself and his friend, the defendant had to stab Bob. It made them scared and run away because they had the sole thought of harming both of them so Johnny had to act fast before he was going to be killed along with Ponyboy. Additionally, he did not commit first-degree homicide because he didn’t plan to kill Bob. When he saw Bob earlier, he didn’t attempt to kill rather, he tried to hide from him. (pg 44) He didn’t pull it out when the socs came to them originally. (pg 54 and 55) He chose to try to resolve it peacefully but that didn’t work because David grabbed Ponyboy.”(pg 55) They forced his hand and he had to stab Bob in order to save himself and Ponyboy otherwise Pony would have drowned in the fountain and Johnny would have been dead too. In conclusion, Johnny did not commit a first-degree
The murder of Bob Shelton occurred because earlier that night Johnny Cade and his friends had been flirting with Bob’s and the Socs’ girlfriends. Bob and four of his friends confronted Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis early the next morning around 2:00 am at a park fountain. David, one of the Socs, began to drown Ponyboy Curtis in the fountain. Johnny Cade lost all sanity and knifed Bob Shelton, who was doing no harm to Cade or Curtis, in order to stop David from drowning Ponyboy Curtis. Johnny is not justified in what he did and is guilty because he carried a switchblade with intent to kill whoever jumped him, killed a person who was not attacking his friend, and lastly, fled the scene of the crime with his friend.

Caesar Rodney, the first of the delegation from Delaware, was a native of that state, and was born about the year 1730. His birth-place was Dover. The family, from which he was descended, was of ancient date, and is honorably spoken of in the history of early times. We read of Sir Walter De Rodeney, of Sir George De Rodeney, and Sir Henry De Rodeney, with several others of the same name, even earlier than the year 1234. Sir Richard De Rodeney accompanied the gallant Richard Coeur de Lion in his crusade to the Holy Land, where he fell, while fighting at the siege of Acre.
Johnny Cade should not be convicted for murder because it was all out of self-defense. Ponyboy and Johnny were at the park when it happened. A blue Mustang full of Socs started to circle them because Ponyboy and Johnny picked up their girls at the movies. Bob got out of the car and Johnny seen the rings he was wearing were the same ring Bob had on when he jumped Johnny. Bob then told David to give Ponyboy a bath. By that he mean put Ponyboy's head into the fountain. Johnny got his switchblade and started to go to David to make him let go of Ponyboy. David let go of Ponyboy and ran. Bob started to ran after Johnny. Johnny stabbed Bob to save Ponyboy and himself. Therefore, Johnny is innocent and should not be convicted for murder. The prosecution
Finally, Johnny is not justified in what he did and is guilty because Johnny killed Bob, who didn’t cause any physical harm in the fight. Johnny stated that “‘I killed that boy.’ Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still” (56). This states that Johnny killed Bob instead of David, who was the one harming Ponyboy. This means that Johnny must have wanted to harm Bob for what he has done in the past.
He was even prepared to do so, because he “carried in his back pocket a six-inch switchblade. He’d use it, too, if he ever got jumped… He would kill the next person who jumped him” (Hinton 34). Since Johnny had the intentions to kill Bob, the murder was not accidental. Not only that, but according to Cornell University Law School, “Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought. Every murder perpetrated to effect the death of any human being other than him who is killed, is murder in the first degree. Any other murder is murder in the second degree.” The law says if the murder is carried out to affect people other than the victim, it is first-degree murder; otherwise, it is second-degree murder. Johnny is guilty of second-degree murder because he had the intentions to hurt Bob, but did not plan it out
Johnny killed Bob to save Ponyboy from drowning. When Ponyboy and Johnny were in the lot, they fell asleep. Johnny had to wake Ponyboy up. When Ponyboy got home, he hoped that Darry was in bed, but he wasn’t. Ponyboy went into his house, and Darry got up from sitting in the chair, and he started yelling at Ponyboy. He said, where have you been? It's almost 2 am in the morning. When Soda-pop woke up he told Darry to stop yelling. Darry yelled at Soda and told him to stop. Then, Ponyboy yelled at Darry to stop yelling at Soda like that. When Ponyboy said that, Darry hit him(pg 49,50 ch.3). After Darry hit him, Ponyboy ran away from his house and met Johnny at the lot. They took a walk to the park. Ponyboy said before Mom and Dad died we got along fine, but now he just can’t stand me (pg 51 ch3). Then they saw a blue mustang circling the park. 5 Socs got out of the car, and they were coming towards Pony and Johnny, the
Stated in Ponyboy´s though, “ Johnny's hand went to his back pocket and I remembered his switchblade” (Hinton pdf 47). It shows that Johnny had a concealed weapon the whole time. Meaning that he could attack anyone within his reach. Showing that he was liable for any incident to happen where he went. Even though Johnny might have concealed a weapon, he saved Ponyboy's life when one of the Socials tried to drown him before he blacked out. It showed that Johnny was trying to stop the Social and get away from the scene that he did not cause. He and Ponyboy were only trying to walk around the park without trying to cause any trouble. Johnny is innocent due to events that happened, “ ... scared him. … most law-abiding of us, now carried in his back pocket a six-inch switchblade.” (Hinton pdf 30). Therefore it shows that what Bob did to make Johnny scared of his own shadow, take extra precaution. He used his brain to see the possibility that Bob could attack him again. It should not be counted as a murder weapon but as a self-defense as how small Johnny was and how large the chance that Bob might attack him
The text said: “‘You really killed him, huh, Johnny?’ ‘Yeah’ His voice quavered slightly. ‘I had to. They were drowning you, Pony’” (Hinton 57). When Johnny and Ponyboy sit in the park and see a can is coming, Johnny is very afraid. He also asks Ponyboy what he should do. But when Ponyboy is almost killed by Bob, Johnny overcomes the fear and takes out of his knife, kills Bob, saves Ponyboy’s life. In this quotation, I think Johnny begins to understand and feel love. Although Ponyboy is strong than him, Ponyboy is younger than him. He should do what a brother should do. His choice is to protect Ponyboy from being killed by Bob. In a word, this violence awakened the ability to love deeply rooted in his
Early in the book Johnny shows that he is shy. But also brave and not scared to stick up for his friends. The Socs jumped Johnny and Ponyboy. They started to drown Ponyboy. Johnny defended him by stabbing Bob. Later, Pony discussed with Johnny, “You really killed him, huh Johnny?’ ‘Yeah.’ his voice quavered slightly. ‘I had to they were drowning
First of all, Johnny was justified in killing Bob. It was in self-defense, the Socs beat up Johnny before traumatizing him, and the only reason why Johnny had his switchblade was because of the same Socs who tried to kill Ponyboy. “The Socs caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the

Analysis: (explain how the quote shows reason 1): Following a previous incident, which Johnny was brutally beaten, he knew the power that Bob had. He remembered the pain and fear he felt during the previous encounter and didn’t want to feel the agonizing pain that he felt in the beginning of the book. As a result, he killed Bob to escape the torment he could have went through.
The first reason as to why Johnny killed Bob was because he had a fear of great bodily harm. Four months before the incident, Bob and his colleagues beat Johnny half to death. He had cuts and bruises, but most especially, he was traumatized. Johnny says that he killed Bob because 1) they could have killed Ponyboy, 2) They had a switchblade (and who knows what intoxicated individuals are capable of doing), and 3) they could have beaten Johnny up, again. Ponyboy explained
