The Dark Knight opens with a classic robbery scene that makes the argument, that there is a code among criminals that should be adhered to. Towards the end of the scene we see the bank manager talking to the Joker exclaiming that criminals used to have honor and respect for one another, an honor among thieves. The Joker does not share this same “honor” and will do what he wants, like murder the people who help him rob the bank, to bring chaos and mayhem to Gotham. This argument could be made by both the Joker and the Director of the film in order to show how different the Joker is from any normal criminal. The mobsters in this film have respect for one another and know not to tamper with someone else’s territory. However, the Joker is not a mobster, he is a psychopath that knows how to manipulate people by using money and scare tactics. The Joker does not rob the mob’s banks because of the money, he robs them to show the mob that respect only goes as far as the dollar you are giving. In Gotham, every criminal knows their place in the large scheme of things and they do try and break the mold because of the fear and “respect” they have for the mob bosses. When the bank manager says that the Joker has no respect for who he is robbing, the audience should see the Joker as the worst of criminals because he does not adhere to any code. The audience should think that the Joker is the worst of the criminals in Gotham because he has no respect for the people helping him with his plans, they are just pawns in his larger scheme. The general audience should know that the Joker is the main villain to Batman, but what this scene shows is that he does not like to work with others because of their differences in goals.
