Joker In The Dark Knight

Throughout “The Dark Knight” by Christopher Nolan crime and deviance is seen throughout the film. Crime and deviance in The Dark Knight has two faces as society accepts crime for those whose are helping them and at the same time punishes those who are punished. Society in Gotham accepts crime when the Batman commits it to help for the betterment of society; however, crime is not accepted when it is committed by mob bosses, gangs, criminal cops, and most importantly through the joker. The forms of deviancy/crime which are seen throughout the film is the Labeling Approach, Human Rights Approach, and Human Diversity Approach.

Unlike the majority of people in this world, the Joker does not think of himself as a good person. He knows he is crazy and does not think too highly of himself. This is called “illusory superiority”, the cognitive bias in almost all people that makes people think of themselves as better people than they actually are. The Joker does not have this. Dred Scott was born into slavery around 1800 in Virginia. He was owned by Dr. John Emerson a surgeon who worked for the army. Dr. Emerson 's career took him, along with his other slaves, to the free territories of Illinois and Wisconsin. While in Wisconsin, Dred Scott married Harriet Robinson, who became property of Dr. Emerson, who also married Eliza Irene Sanford in 1838. When Dr. Emerson died, his slaves were in charge of his wife. Scott tried to buy his freedom and his family’s for $300, but Mrs. Emerson refused, motivating him to sue for his freedom. On April 8, 1846, Dred and Harriet Scott sued for liberty in a court of St. Louis County, Missouri. There were some precedents in the local jurisdiction of Missouri according to which if a slave returned to the State after having been in a free territory, he could remain still free; those precedents had confirmed the principle of "once free, always free".

The Joker appears motivated not by greed, but by a twisted, illogical ideology. Once he has access to the Mafia’s money he burns it. Instead of robbing the bank for money he does it to gain power over various crime syndicates, so he can spread the breakdown of law and order. One critic argued that this shows the Joker is an anarchist (Knight) and not motivated by an ideology. While the Joker takes pleasure in the breakdown of a peaceful society, he is no more an anarchist than Osama bin Laden when bin Laden boasted that the difference between him and Americans was “loving death” (Stengel).

In a movie where good and evil are divided by a very thin line, the Dark Knight rises up to fight against injustice and corruption in Gotham City. An action sequel to the original Batman Begins, this installment is a lot darker filled with more explosion, twists, and suspense. For the first time, a comic has been integrated into the issues of the real world. With the help of District Attorney Harvey Dent and Lieutenant Gordon, Batman sets out to dismantle the remaining mob members and clean the streets of Gotham for good. Their success is only short-lived when they encounter the Joker, a mysterious mastermind who is out to prove that nobility cannot hold in a world of anarchy.

White and Robert Arp’s knowledge of science, economics, philosophy and ethics they help us analyze ethical approaches to real-world issues by arguing for the value of pop culture. White and Arp do a great job relating Batman’s relationship with the Joker to America’s choice to torture. This comes together with the quote by Galeano because they both show an underlying meaning of the ethics behind issues with terror and torture. If Batman is to kill the Joker, there would be many different reasons as to why it is not acceptable. One being that since the Joker is a human, it would not be morally okay to kill him. Another reason is that Batman would then have the character of someone who kills their enemy. Although killing an enemy is sometimes glorified, when you look at the bigger picture it will show more about that person’s mentality than you would think. Like the quote says, the purpose of torture is not to gain information, but to spread fear.

If criminals are not immediate threats, they 'll be let go. Beowulf follows a similar code. He says to Unferth, “You murdered your brothers, Your own close kin. Words and bright wit/ Won’t help your soul.” (320-323.) Beowulf would not harm anyone unless they would harm innocents. They are also both committed to battling corruption. Beowulf travels many miles from home to aid Hrothgar and fight Grendel. Beowulf knows his heroic duty calls him to protect the people of Daneland, even if they aren 't his. Batman feels it’s his responsibility to fight evil in Gotham. He battles criminals regularly and ultimately ends the Joker 's reign. Batman is not threatened by these enemies, but the people of Gotham are, and thus he fights for them. Batman and Beowulf bear the burden of heroic responsibility well.

In this quote, the Joker is speaking to Batman. In this, he’s talking about Harvey Dent. The movie tells the audience that Harvey Dent is seen as the hero of Gotham city, that is why Joker characterizes him as “Gotham’s white knight.” The Joker convinced Harvey Dent to do evil because Harvey didn’t have anything to live for. He had one motive and that was because of his wife, who is now dead; therefore, it wasn’t difficult for the Joker to convince him to kill everyone that was to blame. Joker doesn’t care for anyone, but to cares only for himself. He also likes to see people suffer. Additionally, he tells Harvey to kill everyone that was held responsible for the death of his wife. As one can see, the Joker doesn’t have a moral code because

The city in Gotham is in chaos. They no longer know what they stand for and are starting to wonder if fighting evil is, in fact, creating more evil. One man who stands strong even when the public is second-guessing is Harvey Dent played by Aaron Eckhart. He is the new district attorney and is respected by the entire city for stopping corruption all over the town. He is a clean-shaven man with blonde hair and blue eyes who presents himself as a very proper man. This mise en scene proves that this man is a good man. If he were unshaven, had dark eyes, and dark hair it would be hard to consider him a truly good man. The director realizes this may not be true with everyone but it is a typical stereotype in our society today. As the movie goes on the enemy, who is forcing him to second-guess his values, tests him time and time again. Being an honest man is no longer putting criminals away; they are always one step ahead. By the end of the film, the Joker crushes Harvey’s values and blinds him from what his true goals were in life. His two-sided face shows this visually after being burned in the explosion. Also, Harvey has a coin with a head printed on both sides. This coin never can land on tails but Harvey

About 8 million doctors get appointments from depression a year. These doctors have been falling short because of time, money, and other aspects. Most patients are usually short and limited with insurance coverage. Also people are starting to be more insecure and tense with their mental health. Now, researchers and physicians are seeing this as physical illness. They are now paying more attention to their high blood pressure and heart disease. They're also comparing depression with asthma, diabetes, and congestive heart failure. Depression can also commit other health issues such as diabetes and pulmonary disease.

By them faking Batman they could have gotten themselves injured. In the movie, he explains how he does not want people dressing up as him because it is too dangerous and that is not the point he wanted to make when he created his persona. If a crime had been committed Batman would be there and save the people who were getting affected by the crime. One thing he believed in was people do have good in them, which was proven correct at the end of the movie ultimately. The Joker wanted to reveal the Dark Knight and ended up playing a catch and mouse game with him. The Joker caused chaos in Chicago which made things harder for Batman. and made people leave through a ferry. The joker has placed a bomb on both boats, which one is full of prisoners and the second boat is accompanied will innocent civilians. He gets on the P.A. system and tells both boats there are bombs and only one ferry can survive. Society on both boats went back and forth on pushing the button to blow the other boat up. Both boats were left at an ultimatum and the utilitarians belief is introduced. People had to choose what is in the better interest for the greater good. The ferry full of civilians

The Joker, is a purposeless criminal. He will destroy anything, or anyone who gets in his way, just to accomplish his goal, to break Batman's personal rules, to never kill or harm anyone, but to save Gotham City from danger and

The Dark Knight (2008), directed by Christopher Nolan, demonstrates the idea of good versus evil. Batman is known as the protagonist, and Joker is known as the ultimate villain. The representation of crime in the film is seen from the actions of both characters. The film essentially depicts the act of deviance meaning, “behaviour that violates social norms, including laws”. In normality the government would have the greatest amount of power, but in the Gotham city, power is complex. There is minimal structure of law and order in Gotham city due to powerful people like Batman and the Joker. Citizens of Gotham city can no longer fight for themselves in a world filled with supernatural powers. Therefore, the only hope that citizens have rest in the hands of Batman. Although Batman attempts to save Gotham city from Joker’s criminal intentions. Batman, however, also plays a role in deviant activity while attempting to catch the Joker. Realistically, Batman violates the moral code due to destructive behaviour, and putting the lives of citizens at harm. He does not care for social norms, nor whether his acts are of legality. He is devoted to combat organized crime with Harvey Dent, a district attorney in Gotham city. Batman is in fact, the definition of crime, he understands but does not abide to individual rights and social contracts which make up the rule of law. In addition, the man behind Batman, Bruce Wayne also portrays a form of deviance by disguising himself as Batman.

At that point, according to the Joker, they drop their phony façade and behave like the chaotic, selfish animals that we all are. I submit that his motivation is to conduct social experiments to prove himself correct- that at the core people are controlled by their own selfish needs (while he is only controlled by his own delusion of pretentiousness). He has two men fight to the death with one sharp stick between them. He gives two boatloads of people the detonator to bombs on the other ship. He tells Batman that if he [Batman] wants to catch him [the Joker], that he’s going to have to break his One Rule that was brought up at the end of the first movie—to not kill.
