Starting sometime in the beginning of the sixteenth century, a large land mass located along the Atlantic coast of North America attracted foreigners to its shores. One of the first of these foreigners, Italian navigator, Giovanni da Verrazano arrived in 1524, exploring the coastline for France. Eighty-five years later, in 1609 a Dutchman, Henry Hudson, explored the coastline for England. Fifteen years later, some of the first settlers arrived in North America. Dutch explorer, Cornelis Jacobsen May along with thirty Dutch families settled along the Delaware on Burlington Island. Other Dutch settlements would soon follow (Lurie). Eventually this lead to the Dutch establishing the township of Newark.

The English came to the New World late, after several failed expeditions by Walter Raleigh, Humphrey Gilbert, and Martin Frobisher. Once the Jamestown colony survived its first trials of starvation, disease, riots, and violence with the Powhatan tribe, the English expanded from this base up and down the eastern coast of North America.
Samuel de Champlain is one of the most notable French immigrants in the French Canadian culture. Those who are a part of the French Canadian culture are citizens of Canada who are direct descendants of the first few French immigrants (“French Canadian”). Champlain created maps of Canada, creating a “major trade [route] along the inland rivers” as well as being “the first European to see the Great Lakes” (“North America’s”). As an explorer, Champlain set up the basic land foundation of present day Canada. He explored, mapped, and tracked things and places that were completely new and foreign to not just the French, but the entire European continent.
In this country’s great history, there have been many important expeditions, discoveries, and wonders. One of the most famous and important expeditions in this country’s history is that of Lewis and Clark. Within their great journey, the two men met countless obstacles, met many new and intriguing cultures, and saw some of the most incredible land that God had ever made. After the purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead an expedition on a journey to explore the headwaters of the Missouri River and find an overland route to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Columbia River. Together, their group, known as the Corps of Discovery, departed from Camp DuBois near Wood River, Illinois, on May 14, 1804, and proceeded up the Missouri River using a keelboat and two pirogues. By late fall, the party reached the Knife River Indian Villages near present day Washburn, North Dakota. There they built Fort Mandan and spent a

What makes two civilizations distinct? Is it the thousands of miles and years between them? The Roman Empire and the Aztec Civilization were separated by 1400 years and 6,000 miles, but this doesn’t mean that they’re completely different. Even though there are many obvious differences between these two ancient civilizations, their similarities pertaining to religion, agriculture, and military are remarkable.
