If you were sitting in your church and you were not paying a lot of attention to your reverend preach about god, and out of nowhere he starts talking about how the skulls of unbaptized children coat the floor of hell. So know your like what the world of chopsticks is he talking about? Then you realize that it's the middle of the 1700`sand this is like god's word and you will not deny it. Then you decide to become a puritan and live a pure life (because you have ptsd from the service). So back to the reverend named Jonathan Edwards so on that I told you on the children's skulls being the doormats of hell, you can tell that this dude is a sociopath and/or a psychopath. He did a whole speech based on why god already had our destiny of going to hell/heven pick out for us. During the early to mid 1700`s there was this not so great awakening which composed of mostly 2 preachers Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. They preached throughout the 13 colonies about why you should join a church and become religious, in 1700 you would believe anything that the reverend said especially one that said “ God holds people over the pits of hell” as if you weren't already frightened about children's skulls being lined of the floors of hell.
But I tell you, don’t be angry with anyone. If you are angry with others, you will be judged. And if you insult someone, you will be judged by the high court. And if you call someone a fool, you will be in danger of the fire of hell. “So, what if you are offering your gift at the altar and remember that someone has something against you? Leave your gift there and go make peace with that person. - Matthew 5:22-24
Erikson explains that to most English people of the 16th century, Puritans became an annoying sect of rebels. Overbearing and unrelenting, many detested the exaggeration of conventional values that the Puritans displayed. Feeling restricted by the formalities of the Church, Puritans quickly became deviant in the eyes of society. By moving to Massachusetts Bay, Puritans hoped to create their own ideas of what is “right” and “wrong”, much like any community attempting to set boundaries. However, problems arose when laws were to be mandated in a Biblical sense. God could not sit at a pulpit in a courtroom, so then how would a strictly religious group maintain itself? As Erikson states, “one of the surest ways to confirm an identity, for communities as well as individuals, is to find some way of measuring what one is not”. From this, they developed a keen sense of Devil distinction – that is, ways in which the Devil presented himself through the behaviors of individuals.
“Whoever thinks that he alone has speech, or possesses speech or mind above others, when unfolded such men are seen to be empty”. The play “ Antigone” was about how Creon a king who supports polis, a society where the country is more important than family, dealt with a girl who buried her brother when her brother was a traitor of the city and were banned from burials. The girl’s action strongly offended Creon’s faith and Creon wanted to punish her. Creon ignored the chorus, the seer and his son’s advices and buried Antigone in a tomb. Creon’s son which is the future husband of the girl killed himself because his father said he will kill Antigone in front of him. Creon’s wife died after her son died due to grief. At last, Creon finally realized what he did and became crazy. Creon’s
Jonathan Edwards puts fear in all those who do not follow the word of God by talking about hell and
Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely recognized as one of America’s most profound Theologians. Some might even consider him the master of Puritan revival, since he was the leader of the Great Awakening. During his time he was a devout Calvinist who had the power of single-handedly keeping the Puritan faith strong for over twenty-five years, by using vivid imagery to provoke his audience. Edward's dialect was exquisitely influential and yet wielded with class and ease. This essay argues that Edwards was a prestigious theologian in his time that helped shape modern religious culture.
In Jonathan Edwards Sermon he uses scare tactics to force people to convert to Christianity or burn in hell for internally. This strategy is intended to manipulate public opinion about a particular issue by arousing fear or alarm. One strategy is using scare tactics explaining the anger and wrath of god that is what expressed by hell. “And the reason why they do not go down to hell at each moment, is not because God, in whose power they are, in not then very angry with the; as angry as he is with many miserable creatures now tormented in hell, who their feel and bear the fierceness of his wrath.” He explains the ones who are in gods congregation are at ease with his wrath but the many more who sin daily are now burring eternally in hell.
Jonathan Edwards Sermon “ Sinners in the Hands of an angry god” contributed into the Great Awakening, showing that Hell was real, and whoever defied god was put down. Edwards used dark imagery to get his our heads, the meaning that everyone is predestined and anyone can be sent to hell. Edwards says in his sermon that “ God's enemies are easily broken into pieces, they are a heap of light chaff before the whirlwind”(2). Edwards hoped that the imagery and language of his sermon would awaken audiences to the horrific reality that he believed awaited them, should they continue life without their devotion to Christ? This made many people horrified and help start the great Awakening, making Christians more aware of the power of Christ, and increase their devotion to Christ.
Jonathan Edwards, a negative and realistic man, focused on how God is a judgemental god and sinners will be put to a painful death, they should be fearful. He says in the first few lines of his speech, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, “So that, thus it is that natural men are held in the hand of God, over the pit of hell; they have deserved the fiery pit.” (Edwards, Pg. 23) Edwards implies that everyone deserves to be in hell and he goes on to say that God is an angry God and that no one had done anything to try to ease His anger. Edwards also played a large role in the Great Awakening. He wanted people to experience Christianity in an intense and emotional way. In his speech, he said, “O sinner! Consider the fearful danger you are in: It is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much against you, as against many of the damned in hell.” (Edwards, Pg. 26) Edward’s speech was opportunity knocking at everyone’s doors. He influenced people to want to be saved in a way that made many fearful of what could happen to them if they weren’t saved or a child of God. Edwards believed that God set the world in motion, but was not active in everyone’s life. Edwards believed that God created the world and
The 1700s was a time period of religious revival, people were now beginning to convert from Puritan beliefs to Christianity. This was called The Great Awakening, a great influence to this religious revival was Jonathan Edwards. Jonathan Edwards was a very passionate pastor who in his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” called out unrepentant people he believed had turned their backs against the word of God and had not yet accepted his son Christ or salvation, causing them to be condemned to the pits of hell. In order to express his concern for those who had no yet accepted salvation and were on their way to hell, Jonathan Edwards utilizes rhetorical devices in order to persuade those who neglect God into accepting him and his salvation so they won’t have to live for eternity in hell.
Hello everyone and welcome to my new history channel, People of History. Today we will be discussing a very important inventor, who was known for the creation of the gas mask and the traffic signal, Mr. Garrett Augustus Morgan.
Jonathan Edwards’ memorable sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, was first delivered in 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut during the peak of New England’s first Great Awakening. When he delivered this sermon with horrid descriptions of hell, the congregation listened. It left a dramatic effect on the listeners leaving them weeping, and some even considering suicide! Jonathan Edwards conveyed his message to turn their lives back to religion and repent to their god by his use of tone, emotional appeal, and imagery.
This way, we will believe that we will always stay with our loved ones that continue to live on. And if we did the good things we were meant to do, we would be given the right to permanently live in that infinite state. Just like that, we have a great thing to look up to and have no reason to fear it. However, the Puritans have come to believe that the good things you were meant to do won’t do you any good, because God’s will is random and unpredictable. It seems unfair to anybody, and makes death more scary than it should be. Without being able to tell if you will go to Heaven or Hell, people then and there would be scared because the outcome is unknown. They can only gamble with God, hoping that they get the better outcome. He gave them the idea that their God was angry with them and if they did not convert to Puritanism there would be no escaping hell or God's wrath. Throughout this long sermon there are numerous instances in which Edwards describes God as merciless or when he explains that death is coming and no matter what one does, hell is inevitable. Jonathan Edwards's most effective technique was by far his use of implanting fear into his audience's mind. Edwards says That the reason why they are not fallen already and do not fall now is only that God's appointed time is not
The new American religious figures of this time, like pastor/preacher Jonathon Edwards, desperately wanted to break away from the old world doctrines of Europe. In an attempt to get people on board with the new "spiritual awakening" that was taking place, Edwards used scare tactics in his sermons, that gave his followers the impression that if their souls did not become saved, and they did not dedicate their lives to their religion, they would be deemed to spend eternity in hell, paying for it. There were infinite ways a man could be sent to hell, and it was more of an effort trying constantly not to be deemed wicked or unworthy, than it was just to live your life as a good person, not worrying about the practicalities of it all, for example, when Edwards preached, "God has so many different unsearchable ways of taking wicked men out of the world and sending them to hell". (Edwards 212) The religious followers that Edwards preached to, and the supporters of the witch trials at Salem may have at one point, even through their fear and hate, seen these experiences as spiritually enlightening, giving them a sense of purpose and direction in their lives, but I
Puritan believers are taught to live a strict lifestyle and to adhere to the word of God. This is why the ramifications of sinful behavior are punished by God.
Eric Thomas is a well know profound motivational speaker. He was a former NFL player that has been through many speed bumps in his road to success. After the NFL he became a pastor, and soon stared giving motivational speeches for people all across the world. He has given a countless number of speeches but his “How Bad Do You Want Success” speech is what brought him great exposer. This speech took place at Michigan State University, intended for a group of college students. He was brought to do a motivational speech on success and how to be successful. The three main points he stressed throughout the speech were having heart, sacrifice, and dealing with pain. Although this speech was attended for the college students at Michigan State University, any person could listen to this speech and find motivation within them. As a current college student I find this speech very inspirational and motivating because I was able to relate to it, he was very passionate and emotional, and he kept it real.
